I was a freshman at BYU. Front row on the north end zone. First time I ever stormed the field. I will NEVER forget.

Me too, Sophmore, 5th row in the south end zone. Never thought I would hear "Come Come Ye Saints" and "Popcorn Popping on the Apricot Tree" sung at a football game like that.

@@larrybaxter6881 when did they sing those hymns?
@larrybaxter68813 жыл бұрын
Its been almost 30 years since then. Hard to remember exactly but I remember Come Come Ye Saints while we were still In the stands at the end when Detmer was kneeling just as time was running out. And it was only the last verse that everyone joined in on. As for the Popcorn, I seem to remember that from when I was on the field. Again I joined in on the last verse to that one also.

West side chair seats. What a game! I later had the privilege to shake Ty's hand and congratulate him on his career.

My wife and I and my mother in law were there on the student side of the field about the 15 yd line, north end of the stadium. It was the most powerful fan experience of my 73 yr old life. Been to many games but none compare to the spiritual nature of this game. It was loud, stadium was engaged with every play, every down, it was a spiritual experience. I watch the replay often and it is almost like being there again. My wife was nice to me for weeks after.

I didn't see this game but wow what a game for Ty and the Cougars! Both teams were absolutely amazing!

Watching this video, the amazing thing to me is seeing all these hits that would be called targeting into today’s game.

I'm a Canes fan, and haven't watched this game in years. Wow what a game from Ty and that BYU defense was for real that night.

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson was on that team. Young Rock even references it. Back when Ed Orgeron was defensive coach

For Detmer to play that well against a top-ranked team in the first half demonstrates his greatness.

The last “non p-5” school to win a NC and have a Heisman winner. College football has been destroyed.

I love watching games from Provo, UT and seeing the beautiful Wasatch Mountains. Ron Franklin one of my favorite announcers too. The Miami players were madder than hornets losing to these guys.

I remember betting Miami in this game, thinking they would just destroy BYU. I'm not a typical chalk betting square either, but I really thought the Canes size and speed would be too much for the Cougars to handle. I forgot what the line was (It's been 30 years), but I remember doing a lot of cursing. Hard to believe this same BYU team would get absolutely destroyed in the Holiday Bowl later that year by Texas A&M, losing 14-65. Of course, I have no idea if they had a lot of starters out hurt or not in that bowl game in December, but they beat a real good Miami team here, who went on to win 33 out of their next 34 games after this. At least the following year, I got some money back when I backed Miami against another Cougars with a hot shot QB when they played David Klingler and the Houston Cougars in Miami and whipped them.

Great year for the Cougs, minus the Holiday Bowl annihilation. Tysman was kinda undersized but he managed to put together a solid career as a journeyman backup. I remember his brother playing for the Colorado Buffaloes

I was watching David Carr light up Oregon St (who was top 10 at the time) in 2001. I said to some guys it was the best QB performance I'd seen in 11 years, referring to this game. That weeks Sports Illustrated had a side by side comparison of Detmer and Carr. I couldn't believe it.

Just imagine if Fresno hadn't lost to Boise State and (I believe Hawaii?). They would have been playing for a national championship. Fresno was skyrocketing up the BCS rankings and all the teams ahead of them ended up losing.

I was 10 years old and in we sat in the south end zone where all the great touchdowns were scored. It was so loud. It's by far the best game I have been to in my 42 years. Then many more after that. But beating #1 just doesn't happen every day

BYU grad here. Normally if a 90s Miami team would play BYU, it was going to be a win for Miami but BYU had Ty Detmer that year and the Cougars were fantastic. You guys(MIAMI) were STACKED this is the list of the 12 NFL players you guys had. T Geno Toretta, Craig Erickson, Alex Johnson, Randal Hill, Wesley Carroll, Daryl Spencer, Horace Copeland, Kevin Williams, Coleman Bell, Carlos Etheredge, Russell Maryland
