We simulate the first waves of American soldiers storming the Omaha Normandy Beach on 6th June 1944 against the German defences. We then re-run the simulation with help from modern day Rapid Dragon AGM-158B JASSM Missiles dropped by a C-17 Globemaster.

In Desert Storm we moved through a hardened bunker system that had been hit by B-52s. There were craters that could fit two of our M1A1 tanks inside easily. I could not imagine having been in those bunkers during that bombing.

These final countdown type scenarios are cool, ever considered doing a reverse final countdown where the axis gets a future ship? Binkov just did a hypothetical on a 21st century Japanese destroyer present at the battle of midway, it would be cool to see it modeled.

Pretty sure the modern German navy, with the benefit of historical hindsight, would be more inclined to join the Allies. I'd hope the JSDF would do the same, but Japan hasn't confronted its dirty history the way Germany has.

@@dylandarnell3657 Of course this is likely what would happen. This type of scenario (where future x goes to past event y) focuses more on equipment than people so we can understand both how things have evolved and why events happened as they did in history. Modern German Navy might be small but has better sensor packages that would be useful in the poor weather during the breakout attempt by the Bismarck. On the other hand could their armaments actually do anything to the British ships as they were designed with different armor schemes.

Dad ran telephones and radios for a mechanized artillery battalion. He had an extra large jeep with radios and spools of wire. He drove it into a ship in England. Spent the night on the ship. Then on D day, they beached the whole thing. The bow opened up, and they built a road up the beach. They set up and started shooting inland.

Your main issue with the server is probably that DCS only uses one core of the cpu, so you need the the cpu with the BEST single core performance, nothing else matters except the single core performance for DCS. A quick search says that the i9-13900K has the best single core performance. Lets hope ED fix's it so that the engine will use more cores, though I've heard it's very difficult, maybe even impossible on that old engine their using.

I can't imagine how awful it must have been to be in the leading wave of landing craft during the D day landings. You're a helpless passenger in a slow moving, poorly armoured target for a couple of minutes of sustained fire on the approach. Then, assuming you get to the beach, your last remaining cover is dropped as the ramp goes down and you've got to run up a sandy minefield into a wall of machine gun and artillery fire in the full knowledge that the overall plan is to drown the enemy in blood.

Jump off the side of the ramp. If you went straight the wave action would cause the ramp to knock you over and crush you.

Ideally aircraft should have bombed the beach from low altitude to clear mines just prior to the boats landing and attack aircraft strafing the bunker openings as the guys got ashore and dug in. Given the tech of the day not sure how effective it would have been but it would have probably prevented some loss of allied life. Even beaching a couple stripped down older ships with extra armor and guns to provide suppression fire every couple hundred yards would have done wonders.

The CO was an Airborne trooper that was confused as to how he spawned on the beach. He jumped out a perfectly good airplane hours ago, an now he is way off his intended drop zone.

Based solely on wikipedia info, max lift capacity of a c-17 would be around 75 JASM @ 2200lb apiece. still bloody impressive

I thought C-17 could carry 45 JASSM in total, not 90? 5 pallets of 9 missiles each. 12 for C-130, in two pallets of 6 each.

Not sure if you follow many history KZfaqr channels but if you aren't familiar with The History Underground I must give my highest recommendation. He did a whole video series on location at all the beach invasion sites of D-Day and gives context to each sites' major impacts on the war and how it affected the outcome from the perspective of both sides of the conflict. He also collaborates with the Gettysburg Museum of History and highlights historical artifacts associated with major historical events. Very good content to check out, very addicting, I feel it compliments the spirit of what you do in the simulations on this channel.

The Germans put most of their men and guns underground in hardened shelters, so when the Allied battleships and bombers pounded the area with bang-bang, all they did was churn up the earth and kill worms. When the barrage lifted (which it had to do eventually so they didnt kill their own men) the Germans moved their men, cannon, and machine guns into position almost totally unharmed. Thats why the RL barrage was pretty ineffective - and as good as modern weapons are, back in 1944 they still had 2000lb bombs and 16 inch battleship shells which will have had the same effect....

I love the current day/modern tech vs. WWII! Great video. I think it would be a fun scenario if a flight of Su-34s with 4 1500kg laser guided bombs (currently the heaviest bomb the Su-34 can carry multiple of) could lift the German Siege of Sevastopol in 1942? They would be instrumental in relieving the aerial bombardment as well as destroying some sort of Axis railway artillery (the biggest gun ever made was a railway gun used in the siege) to help out the Soviets on the ground. Maybe protect some ships in the port like the video a few weeks ago with the ToT strike on the black sea fleet in harbor.

Great uncle Stephen Billington had bad feet so he went into the medical core. He said the landing craft in the vids is just in front of his. Makes it real when you see it like that. And then he traveled slowly across Europe until he arrived with his red cross arm band at Belson. He never spoke about that part.

RE the server problem. You mentioned the multiplayer server was in Sweden. - It is possible to get one placed in a high-bandwidth country? - Is it possible that the net trunkservers are throttling out-of-country traffic? If so, has anyone tried broad spread use of VPN technology? - Do you need more horsepower in the UK... augment the fast Gamer with a real Server? The reason I ask is that, I'm in the process of spec-ing out a new Winn 11 server for my clinic, and if I new what kind of hardware could help, might be tempted to donate a bit of excess hardware to the cause, but we'd have to know exactly what it needed (bundle of a hundred VPN subs vs- 9 blades of real industrial horse power.... there's a wide range there). For the daily rasks : more Vapid Dragon.

You should do a complete ww2 reenactment from start to finish and see how you can do. Plan your own D Day and everything. Use all ground forces and air forces but can't use anything modern or at least past the Korean War era

You really should think about just how much work that would entail before you ask for something like that, and the time to show it! To do all of the 2nd World War would take a small team like GR months of HARD free work 8 hours a day, and then well over a year of videos every single day. People would get bored as hell of that and stop watching. It would be a complete waste of time and effort.

Hey Cap, can you do a game based in WWII, our Shermans and troops but we have Apaches and Blackhawks added to our Warbird stock? I believe you had a Tank game y'all were playing there for a few weeks back last summer ( I think it was ). I think it would be cool to watch where our Hero's were laying the law down along with our WWII planes too. I liked the ground view best in that tank sim you ran. lots of details and just looked great. you think you could set something like that up and run it?? I'm not exactly a military strategist, but I can't for the life of me understand why the planes didn't strafe the entire length of the beaches with wave after wave after wave of smoke screen bombs in front of all the pillboxes. The Jerry's shouldn't have been allowed to see two feet in front of them much less have perfect unimpeded line of sight. Did we do that and I just don't know about it, or what?

There's a couple of things that should be fairly obvious. 1) You CANNOT eliminate the beach defenses. They are going to reap the attacking infantry like grain. You HAVE TO mask the target area with smoke, to give the troops a chance to creep up close to the bunkers, and take them out with grenades and such. 2) You MUST land specialized armour in the first wave. Most critical are the mineclearing tanks. The second point, especially, was completely proved on D-Day. Omaha Beach, where the American leadership rejected use of Hobart's "funnies", was almost a complete disaster, and could have scuppered all of Overlord.

Yup, in 1944 on the beaches of Normandy 18 and 19 year old men jumped off landing craft into a hail of gunfire, knowing they were probably going to die but determined to fight to the last. Surly for a server you would not use a gaming PC? I would imagine a meaty processor and as much RAM as you can install would be the way to go? I’m not an expert but surly a GPU is superfluous as the rendering is being done client side?

If you look at the minimum and recommended requirements for a dedicated DCS World server, they're basically the same specs as a decent gaming PC, but without the need for a dedicated graphics card. For a CPU, the recommended spec is for a Core i5+ at 3+ GHz or equivalent AMD FX / Ryzen, and for RAM, they recommend 8 GB for most missions and 16gb for "heavy missions." Minimum recommended RAM is half that (4 for regular, 8 for heavy). I suspect Eagle Dynamics is probably under-recommending there. And I do think that more CPU and more RAM would absolutely help. Also, DCS doesn't do multi-threading yet, so that's part of the problem.

Even if it took two direct hits with 500 pound bombs to destroy a fortification, would the men inside be capable of fighting with one hit after that sort of concussive injury? Not nearly all of that shockwave will be dispersed into the ground by the concrete bunker. A lot will make it through to the crew.

75 if we compare it to the max payload of the c17 during wartime production, it could probably be achieved 75 lrasm's and malds from other planes, really, no fleet can survive that unscathed short of having a laser weapons system

Can you attack the 3 Gorges Dam with the Rapid Dragon Missile system, and a Global Hawk drones with the Radar Suppression packages for the F-35 SEAD mission that would be needed to clear the way? If you can attack the S-300, S-400, S-500 Anti Missile batteries? Can you model Cluster Bombs? Napalm? White Phosphorus munitions? Nerve, Mustard and Chlorine gas bombs?

Cluster bombs are already in vanilla DCS, they don't use them because the individual explosions quickly bog down multiplayer. Same for mini guns. They make lots and lots of particles for the server to keep track of in exponential numbers per second. Shame really, because they are fun to use.

Man I can't wait until dcs is more optimized for this kind of thing. Hardware isn't the problem, it's the optimization of software and it's not an easy fix. Support for multithreading isn't a switch you can flip and it's what dcs desperately needs. From what I have been able to discern anyways. I know a few of you guys have some serious horsepower in your rigs. Probably a lot to ask but what kind of hardware is the server running? I'd guess that right now your best bet would be an Intel 13900k. If you can't use all the cores then you use the fastest one you can get with the most IPC. Lol I was already writing this comment before you mentioned then difficulties of running this.

you have an AM4 board, right Cap? I don't know if it scales well with 3D cache because DCS is dumb, but you may want to consider the R7 5800X3D Fewer cores than your R9 5900X but those cores are way faster. DCS doesn't scale too well with multi thread. ED said they'll fix that, but ED is as ED does

If 5 B-52s fly in trail along the beach and do an ARC LIGHT from 50K feet dropping Mk-84s. That would wipe out everything, nothing left standing or alive. Low cost. PS I would not be in a boat or aircraft, I am back at the airbase fixing the aircraft if it came back.
