C.K Tools Armourslice SWA cable stripper - does it work?

Our first run-in with the CK armourslice didn't exactly go well. Since then Garys had a lesson from Chris at @Cjrelectrical so we decided to give it another go.
The CK Tools armourslice is a handy electricians tool to score the armour around a steel wired armoured cable (SWA). It functions a bit like a plumbers pipe cutter, but with a short hacksaw blade instead of cutting disc.
A few turns around where you plan to fit the cable gland and the hacksaw blade partially cuts through the armour strands. Remove the outer cable health and waggle the strands to complete the job.
What do you think of this tool review?
Have you used the armourslice?
Do you have any useful tips to share when terminating SWA cable?
Comments always welcome.

I've used a plumbers splice for years. Always a very quick and efficient way of cutting SWA.

I have never used one but after 30 years and a hacksaw and don’t have any problems with doing it this way. Each to their own.

After glanding probably in excess of 3 or 4 thousand SWA cables in an LNG plant under construction for 5 years, I got pretty good with a hacksaw too … However there’s no denying that this is an incredibly inefficient, labour intensive task. Doing it for 30 years no problem isn’t a real argument against innovation. I personally tried a heap of different methods over the years too, and found tools like this don’t work. Nothing seems to do as good a job as a hacksaw. But, I wouldn’t “no problem” .. the problem is time.. and RSI. One or two glands with hacksaw, fine. But when you’re in a hazardous area doing thousands of these things .. you’re wishing there was a solution. I cut cable ladder with a hacksaw “no problem” also … but sending a circular saw through it is a hell of a lot faster, and neater. Good on these guys for trying, but I can see from the video it’s not the ultimate solution.

I have used one, and keep it in my bag all the time. As @CJR Electrical eluded to, I find it good to give it one little twist as it bites the steelwire. Great bit of kit.

I have CK SWS slicer and think it's a great kit too have in the tool bag. I got used to it after 4th attempt. Slices with prisicion and easy to gland afterwards. Personal opinion is definitely worth having.

Great video and helpful.....especially in conjunction with seeing Gary’s previous video doing it the traditional way. I have one of these, bought on impulse, not used it yet. I don’t see a problem with either way of doing it.....maybe use the AS routinely and have traditional method as a back up.

I have been using one of these for a few years now. Great bit of kit! Every time I have seen someone fail with it its been down to user error (usually over tightening it!) If you look at the bottom of the thread there is a un threaded part, Tighten thd knob down until the unthreaded part just disappears from view and you have perfect tension. Wind it round 20-30 times (cable size depending judgement required!) and you are golden! Just wish they made a larger one! Only downside is they dont work well on really small cable. But 3 core 2.5mm is fine :)

As a happy owner of a CK CWA tool I'd say I am a happy bunny with mine, if it's just to do one I'd default to a hacksaw. But with a few to set up I just find the CK an easier option. But as ever it's each to their own and what works best for you

Did about 6 no 6mm 3 core armoured ends and the blade was used up. Not sure if that is normal, however I was using it like a tube cutter and turning up the blade as I worked the cable end.

My Barclaycard is twitching in my pocket. CJR is bad news. I watched his top 10 tools the other night. I now find myself about to buy Knipex ergostrip cable strippers. AND worse .. I’m bidding on eBay for a second hand wira speedy power driver set. And I still hanker after the $$$ ferrule crimper that Gaz and Gordon bedazzled me with last year 🪄🧙‍♀️ 🥕... ho hum .. I’ll just stick to Lidl G&T (at night) .. after hiding my Barclaycard 😂. Ta guys for excellent vid 👍

I really like my armour slice. I find that just doing it round and round loads of times makes it much easier. I tend to go round about 50 times which is way more than enough and makes the armour fall away on the first bend. 50 times might seem like ages, but the way that the armour comes straight off and no bent over ends makes that a much quicker method for me!

I have one and used it for about a year, had to use a couple of M4 bolts to keep it together, a tip on buying the blades is to just cut a hacksaw blade down, works out a lot cheaper. But, I'm back to the junior, due to the speed, old habits I suppose, 6/10 for the tool.

Watching this again and again. It seems Gaz is turning it in the direction of the arrow but when he stops to look at Joe then starts turning again he is going in the other direction? I might be wrong but that’s what it looks like on the video. Nice bit of kit though. Great video as always guy’s 👍❤️⚡️⚡️⚡️

If you listen closely, the audio isn’t synched with the video either. The noise of the teeth crossing the steel wire armour is heard when the tool is stationary.

This piece of equipment has been there since and been using it but you have to use your common sense in order to get it right because there is not guidance how many turns do you need in order not to cut through the cable, it does pretty clean job.

If your cable is thinner than 12mm, adjust the blade so it sticks out more. This wasn't a great video using an offcut, I think the Armourslice is a brilliant tool for anyone's Bag

Bought one of these, and they are crap, doing a piece of swa cable at a bench looks very easy but do it in situ, forget it. My opinion don't waste your money been doing swa for more that 30 years with a hacksaw, stay with it

It is scary how the guy in glasses sound exactly like richard osman! the tool on the other hand is complete garbage, way quicker witha junior or normal hacksaw and a lot lighter to carry on large sites. Another gimmick im afraid.
