why is it int length = 0? im a total beginner in programming, sorry for the stupid question(?)

Never a stupid question. It's a good habit to get into initializing your variables when you declare them...especially in C++ where there can be memory concerns easily. Setting int length = 0; is just a safe way to initialize the variable length to "nothing" for this program.
