The truck looks great! If that old 396 gets tired and needs to be replaced I couldn't think of a better diesel swap candidate. Not only would you get much better mileage, but you can put a matching diesel generator, cooktop and heater in the RV as well.

Glad you had a great birthday Emily! I'd pull the 396 out and have it freshen's up and put fuel injection on it. Most of all a side view mirror and a back up camera. Fix leaks etc. Otherwise, I'd leave it as is. Love it though.

Hey Emily & Aaron, here's my grocery list of what I'd do with the C30. 1. Fix all the leaks. 2.Refurbish the heater, stove, memory foam mattress up top. 3. New Disc. Brakes all 6. 4. Repower with GM diesel of cummins, Relocate the fuel tank. 5. Make it a 4X4, to go more places with it. 6.Up Grade stereo to blue tooth. 7.Put Agile OffRoad kit on it. 8. replace all the screens with No Cem netting. (Bug Proof) 9. Add Solar 800 Watt flex panels to the top. Battle Born Battery bank. Contact Billy on his channel- Tula's Endless Summer for some tips. He and Sierra did there camper truck about a year ago. He would have great tips on everything. 10. "Keep On Truckin' Sticker should be mandatory due to the era of this rig. Have fun.

I live full time in a RV. I love your RV. I was sold on it when I saw the manual transmission.

A suspension overhaul would be my first concern. 4x4 is a great idea. I’d put a hitch on the back to haul the ski boat. And a hitch on the front to launch it. That opens up a lot of other options for adventures

This is going to be an awesome traveling machine. My father had one and he pulled a 22 ft Glaspar ski boat all over the United States. So happy to see you all starting a new adventure. God Bless.

There are birthday presents and then there's getting a '70 Chevy C30 / 396 Camper Special with a dually rear-end for your birthday with only 96K on the clock... With a little TLC, (Fixing the heater, repairing the skylight, the passenger side mirror and installing a stereo...) this rig should go another 52 years with lots of memories to boot!!!!! Absolutely freaking awesome, fun motorhome!! I'm so jealous! To stop the grinding in 1st gear, go to another forward gear then into 1st. That will use the chosen gear's syncro to stop the trans. so you can go into granny low 1st (non syncroed) without it grinding. And those old trucks don't need the door slammed to close. Just rest it against the latch and push. It should close nicely. What a cool find. It is in such good shape. Enjoy! Be safe!

I think you will love that rig. It definitely needs air bags in the rear and a good set of front and rear sway bars. The 396 should easily be able to scoot that rig around - put a Holley injection system on it and an upper end kit so it will do well on hills and such.

I'd do stock height with some meaty tires and a locker, spend all the coin on a solar setup and stuff for remote camping that isn't super treacherous in such a heavy, tall rig. PS. our 2017 Class C is 12ft 4in. ground to top of A/C. i'm guessing that is about average hard clearance for a camper.

First off, HAPPY BIRTHDAY EMILY! That's a sweet looking and surprisingly clean rig for being 52 years old. As for what I'd do with it I would go OEM+ where it's modernized but also still has the original spirit. Do the bulk of the work underneath to make it fresh again. I'd be tempted to redo the exhaust with a couple new looooong glass packs. Something like a Magnaflow or Borla system would sound great too. If it got 8-10mpg that's pretty good. 4.11 rear?

Now that is a real truck ! Easy to fix , fun to drive , and it is standerd ! I'd keep it as is And just and a trailer hitch front and back ! Probly ad a locker to the rearend for extra traction in the winter And on soft ground !

Aaron. Add a 1984 corvette fuel filter directly before the mechanical fuel pump. Disconnect the ignition coil. Disconnect the line to the carb at the fuel pump. Use a short hard line to a hose to a clean clear sofa bottle. Get Emily to crank the engine for 15 seconds. While you watch the pulses of fuel into the bottle. Do this 3 times. 15 seconds per time . This protects the fuel pump check valves from sediment that causes overnight fuel drain back. And hot vapor lock issues. The 84 vette fuel filter is 10 micron.

Make it a 4 by, and gut the insides. Update everything, but keep the retro look. Her laugh is infectious.

I hope you had a great Birthday! When I was 3 years old (1970) my mom needed to go to school. My Grandparents took me in their 1969 Chevy pickup (small block) pulling a travel trailer to Mexico. What a trip. The Mexican children took to me because I had Blond hair and blue eyes. A man said I could have his tractor if I could drive it home. We were down there for a long time in that truck. It had a camper shell and a removed rear window so I could crawl up to the front seat. We came home though Texas, where I bit my thumb eating a hamburger, and went to Oklahoma where I turned 4 (1971) at my Great Grandmother's house. One day I woke up to see a landmark draw bride in my home town. I had fun but was so glad to be home in California. Thanks for the video. Love that truck! I apologize for talking so much about myself, but I was so young, and I distinctly remember that truck so well...

I stayed in a 14ft trailer that looked just like this one inside while renovating a house...i loved it...my ex hated it... wasn't fancy enough for her liking...the lady in this video is good one that appreciates new old stuff 👍

If it is a true 396 truck, it will be about 265 horse and 400lb ft torque, 9:1 compression, the carb will likely be the biggest 2V you ever saw. I bought a replacement carb. When I got it home, the entire carb would fit through the hole in the intake with an inch on either side. you need to make sure that you tell any jobber that it is a 396 truck.

I like Aaron's idea about 4x4 & lift kits. Monster muddy tires too. Also think about headers & side pipes, you got the room. A nice generator & AC set up after you get all the leaks fixed. Aaron should check the propane at home, it will be fast & easy to check for leaks. I also still use my Coleman Camping Stove in the Pheonix, even though I have a 2 burner propane stove that I have never even tried, I'm worried about it because it is full of propane that's been in there over 5 years. I will take care of that issue this spring. What you have there is a big score, in so many ways. When I found my 89' Dodge Pheonix, she was sitting behind a barn, & had not been driven in over 4 years. I was worried about that at first, but once I fired her up & she started, I knew I had to have her. With-in the first 5 minutes, I managed to get her out of the ruts she made in the mud under her own power, 4 years of sitting in one spot, it looked like she had 4 flat tires, but they were just buried in the mud. I broke the serpentine belt as the alternator pully was rusted & wouldn't turn, & eventually wore the battery down trying to keep her going. I stuck a new battery & belt on her & used a big crow bar to finally break the pully loose so I could get a test drive in. Best deal of the century, $2000.00 bucks + they threw in a Honda 2000UI Generator & I drove her home. Best purchase I made in over 60 years. I already have my tickets for the 2022 NASCAR Race at Road America, I have my campsite set, my golf cart rented, waiting for the 4th of July. Enjoy your birthday present Emily. If it has a metal roof, the stuff to use is Cool Seal. I have an 87 travel trailer that I refurbished and had to fix a ton of leaks on. You never have to change the metal roofs (as long as they haven't been tampered with) but you do have to reseal the seams. The cool seal comes in a paint can; all you have to do is put a good layer on all of the seams on the roof once a year and it won't leak a bit. Any roof accessories (vents, etc.) you do have to use the correct goop to seal, but on all of the metal on metal seams, cool seal is the way to go. Make sure to check the corners, those tend to leak and the corners need to be pulled and resealed. Same thing with the windows, doors, etc.; its definitely a process to bring these old rigs back into a good leak proof shape.

Great camper! Years ago I drove a old Chevy delivery truck . Brings back memories.

The correct way to start those old carburetor engines is: Push the gas pedal slowly to the floor/wide open throttle and release, that will set the automatic choke. Then just start the car, do not give it any gas while starting. If the carburetor works correctly it will come to a fast idle and as it warms up the idle should come down. If it does not reduce the idle speed, tap the gas pedal and it should come to a normal idle if the engine is warm. If it ever gets flooded, hold the pedal all the way to the floor. That will open the butterflies and allow more air into the carb and it should start, then release the pedal. Nice camper, I am sure you will make it run correctly. I would guess if you get 7-9 mpg you will be lucky, maybe less, especially dragging that camper through the air.

The little dog is so sweet, got so excited to see dad come in. Our little dog was a street dog from Puerto Rico and she lays in the window until one of us comes home.

What a great set up! Gotta love those older Chevys. I had one of those years ago. The back of the Mitchell camper was a fold down deck with sliding glass doors. It was all kinds of awesome. It was a 1969 C-20 Camper Special with a 396, 4 speed with granny 1st and 4 wheel drive. Same colors too. 2 Gas tanks and I had a removable platform welded to the front bumper that held a cooler, fishing rods and a folding chair so I could pull right up to a lake or river or beach and cast right from the front of the truck. I miss that rig.

Happy Birthday!! My wife and I used to camp in a 1969 Apache pop up tent trailer that we pulled with a 4cyl. Toyota truck, it would be great until we got to a hill then was 3rd. gear at 40 miles per hour. Oh yea I forgot to tell ya we did this in the 1980's and 90's. On your RV, I would fix the leaks, make sure the truck heater worked, install air conditioning in the truck and on the roof of the RV if it isn't there already. Keep the 4-speed then put BIG disc brakes and a BIGGER turbocharger on it. Before I forget I gotta know what was The Kids reaction to it.
