Hi Marv; Both engines on This C119 were run Saturday and Sunday for the first time this year! So it ain't over yet ... Thanks for sharing your memory. Regards from Alaska!

Some C-119 were equipped with P&W R 4360 radials rated at 3200 hp each and could produce near 4000 HP if in the War Emergency Power settingI worked on these biggest of all radials ever produced for four years as a flight line mechanic. Our squadron was equipped with C-97s. 28 Cylinders, 56 spark plugs, guzzled oil and 145 octane AV gas. The 4360 engine was even tried on the F4U Corsair fighter. The torque was so massive the plane was considered unsafe to fly or maneuver properly.

I remember going up to Willow Grove Naval Air Station when my father flew in to pick him up. As a 5 or 6 year old, the cargo compartment seemed huge.

Man what an awesome video, thanks for sharing.

Will do more videos if it flies or if there are more engine runs... the potential customers for the airplane have been politically slaughtered and are gone, so the two planes are basically on maintenance hold...Not being flown. Sad state of affairs!

@@BetterAircraftFabric What has happened with the progress on this C-119? Are politics still preventing it from flying? What are the regulations in place that prevent its airworthiness?

X flew into Stewart airbase in tenn on one of these as air reserve 928 combat support squadron we were taxing in between rows of black painted gunships c119 and c130. An awesome impressive sight as we came into our parking place

Made one jump from the venerable 119 - was in 1968. Took off from Kelly AFB, San Antonio, Texas, and jumped from 8,500' over Hondo, Texas. Was about 20 on the load - good fun jump. Also, worked one avionics instrument problem on a transient 119 - Torque Oil Pressure system, as I recall. Changed the 26vac synchro style transmitter (mounted on the fire wall. ) Which also meant changing the attached capillary tube (with banjo fitting on the nose case). What a job! Engine was the 3,500 hp P&W R-4360. 28 cylinders. What a monster engine!

Great! Well done guys! love the part where the exhaust cover blows away ;-)
@BetterAircraftFabric9 жыл бұрын
Hi, Yeah we do not want to climp up there Twice! So we let it blow off on startup and then just have to put it back on the end of the day, its very light plastic, it does not hurt a thing! A high Speed Taxi Test was done last Wednesday and showed no problems at all, but Winter is upon us....
@a26invader9 жыл бұрын
BetterAircraftFabric That´s great news! Any footage from the high-speed test? I remember well seeing both Boxcars back in 2004 on a visit to Palmer. I always knew you guys would eventually pull it off! Cheers

I'm surprised such an entirely useful airframe never saw turboprop conversion.
@BetterAircraftFabric9 жыл бұрын
Blitzvogel Mobius Well, I would say I blame the FAA for that! The cost of getting something like that legal is just way too much...The Aviation industry faces those problems every day!

Did it leave Palmer, or just stays around up there? Wonder if it's still airworthy...
@BetterAircraftFabric4 жыл бұрын
Hi Dave, It is still in Palmer, as is the second one. The second one had to be parked around the corner, by the demands of the airport manager. This one is basically airworthy, but the list of "little things" maintenance items is endless. It was being worked on this summer. Again.

Hi Mick, its too bad I do not have any decent video of a takeoff from the cockpit, these engines sound outlandishly good also at 2950 RPM and higher manifold pressures...

How come the C-119 is only still flying in Alaska? I believe the Forestry Service uses them for forest fires, but only in Alaska? Here is a link to my Dad's old movies of him with his favorite aircraft. He was a radio/instrument tech.
@BetterAircraftFabric8 жыл бұрын
+John Powell - Hi John, Well that is an extremely Political Question! in the 1980's there were many C119 flying in Alaska, operating commercially! Then a competitor flying C130 got with political friends and had the laws changed and killed the C119s even in AK. A bunch of BS. Nobody ever died in a civilian C119 in AK. The Borate Bombers / Flying Tankers flying Firefighting Missions would overload and overstress the planes and crash them, also often combined with bad maintenance, that gave the 119 a bad rep with the dear Government. If its used by the Book, its a great airplane!

@BetterAircraftFabric4 жыл бұрын
Well, I guess I have to explain to you that you cannot start these engines without the APU running first and while you start !!! A starting attempt on batteries alone is pretty sure to kill 'em dead.

Cool Plane with the very expensive 3350 engine to maintain. Doubt she can make enough revenue to stay flying on annual basis!
