Another feature of the instrument panel: if you hold the Option button and press the Fuel button 4 times, you enter the diagnostics where the computer lists out every code stored on the computer. You then get the option of clearing each code individually after it’s done cycling. It reads “Manual Diagnostics”, press Options until you find the code you are looking for and hold Reset to clear it.

Thought I would mention the ability to pull codes from the DIC panel..... I'm no expert, but I don't know of any other vehicle that allows you to do this on the DIC? 1. Turn the ignition to the On position, but don’t start the engine. 2. Press the “Reset” button on the Driver Information Center (DIC) to turn off any warning messages. 3. Press and hold the “Options” button. 4. While holding the “Options” button, press the “Fuel” button four times within a 10-second period.

Why do I love C5 Vettes, it's the pop-up headlights! Last years before they went with a fixed headlight but the nostalgia the pop-ups give are great. Sad state when we do not get a newer car with this interesting design feature.

Well I bought a 1999 Corvette in Nov 2021. Had trouble with the serpentine belt staying on. Got one with deeper groves, it stayed on. This was a symptom of a bigger problem. 600 miles to Florida condo, and real problem found. The harmonic balance had started to separate, and serpentine portion move towards timing cover. Part changed out by local shop, and all is good. This is a not so common problem with C5 & C6 vettes, and owners must be aware. Mine was just caught in time before more serious damage was caused. I was lucky.

I've done a couple of vidoes on this issue, and you are correct...it is the #1 issue that most new Corvette owners are unaware of. Lyle
@avflyguy
@avflyguy Жыл бұрын
On the C5's and C6's, where the harmonic balancer goes on the crankshaft, first, it's a taper shaft crank, and it does not have a woodruff key to keep it in place. It has a HUGE torque load on to keep it tight, but some do still come loose and sling a belt. GM's answer was to use a new bolt and the face of the bolt face has embedded tiny diamond shards (for lack of a better word), so that when torqued to 280 ft/lbs (somewhere in that range) the diamond chips 'dig in' to the mating surface of the bolt face and the harmoic balancer. Problem solved with cheap GM engineering. Who'd a thunk it
@lashlarue2266
@lashlarue2266 Жыл бұрын
@@csvette .... well, when you are 600 miles from home, and the break loose harmonic balancer is beginning to rub on the timing cover, local shops are not aware of GM's mess, nor the fix they came up with. And since this problem exists in C5 & C6, they sure took their time of coming up with their near secret solution. I'm surprised anyone knows. Cheers.

On an early C5, if the option code sticker isn't in the glovebox, look underneath the driver's side hatch cover in the floor of the trunk. Also, reproduction build sheets and window stickers with your car's info are available from the National Corvette Museum.

Hi Lyle.... I called and spoke to you a little while ago. ( Me from Australia again, With the Right-Hand Drive 97 C5, )........ Another thing I realized on my c5 is, If you are doing something inside the car, and need to keep the doors open for a length of time, you don't have to disconnect your battery to turn the interrior lights off.. All you have to do is click the door latch on the side of the door when you have it open, with a screw driver to simulate the door is closed, while you have it open, and this turns off all you interrior lights, as if the door is closed, so you can work on it all day without having to worry about your battery going flat....... Thanks again Sam.

To add to the fuel door release, there is also a rear hatch release in both rear storage compartments there is a tiny cable with a ball on the end on each side of the car. You can pull each 1 to release the hatch in case you lose power or if it becomes inoperable. When in competition mode if you want to read say oil or water temp you can hit the reset button on the DIC an read all info you can normally see and it stays in Comp. mode. If you have locking lug nuts there is an indentation under the left rear and center storage covers where the meet up for the key for factory locking lugs.

Another unknown to most C5 owners is that there is a cabin pressure release valve which is located under the carpet just behind the driver side rear tire on the sidewall. This valve allows air to flow out of the cabin when closing the trunk on FRC and verts, and the hatch on the coupes. Without this valve closing the hatch or trunk with the windows up and roof on/up would be a challenge.
@csvette
@csvette 2 жыл бұрын
IT would! It would also pop your ears everytime you close the door. I wish they had inserted another valve on the other side of the car--the single valve is barely adequate. Lyle
@gotmylk
@gotmylk 2 жыл бұрын
@@csvette Agreed on the second valve. I've been fortunate to own 3 c5s and one for 20+ years since new. Neither of them had issues with the hatch or trunk closing with a firm press on the lid. However, I've heard from others having issues where they needed to open their doors or windows, or remove the roof to get their trunk or hatch to close.

If you put your ignition switch in the second position then push the accelerator three times it resets the oil change indicator. Push it four times it reset your ABS and traction control systems. Mine turned on when I went through a huge puddle of water and got something wet.

Hey Kyle I finally subscribed. my first introduction to you was a statement that I here far too much of . & It was " so your looking to buy a C-5! " Stay away from the early years 97-2000 & absolutely walk away from the a-4 (4l60E) Lyle I seem to not learn past mistakes! By the time I saw your video I had already bought ( with Very little research) my 56,000 "99" with an A-4. I have already changed the harmonic balancer & power flushed the A-4 & added amsoil because these rear mounted A-4s get far too HOT? My only saving grace is I have the "so called performance axel" I Just have to learn to live with my automatic however it would be easier if there wasn't a 6 speed in every video & Every C-5 Expert saying stay away from them! (It's not like the old days when you could swap them) lastly have you seen the video where if your locked out of your C-5 so you just shake the rear body side to side ( vigerisley) & for some reason the rear hatch opens up! (Coupe) for sure thanks Lyle sorry if this was too long! Chris

Hi Lyle.... I called and spoke to you a little while ago. ( I'm the guy from Australia, With the Right-Hand Drive 97 C5, With the funny accent! ).... Anyhow, I asked you about the ride control feature on my C5, as I could not tell, if it was working, as I changed from "Tour" to "Sport" to "Perf".... There are quite a few blogs about this mystery with others too, saying the same thing...... Well !.... What I found is, If you drive the car, at just normal speed on a quiet piece of road, and do a bit of a slight "Slalom" from left to right, ( Just a couple of feet to the left and right ), and switch between the Three modes ( "Tour" to "Sport" to "Perf" ) as you are doing it, and You can definitely feel the difference in your steering wheel, as it becomes stiffer and more direct..... At least this is an indication ( For the Newbies like me ), that something is actually happening when you move the dial, as until this, I could not feel anything without trying to be Ayrton Senna. Thanks Lyle. Great job, Great Channel, Great presentation, and YOU, are a fully professional bloke and a half, as we say down here... Thanks again Sam.

Here's one I would imagine you are aware of. My battery went dead and when I put a new one in the car would start and roll about 5' and shut off. Over and over. The I thought of something...I have a 99 FRC but I had a 90 before. It did that a long time ago and I went to the passenger door and locked the door WITH THE KEY and then unlocked it. Started right up and drove perfectly. I think it is tied into the security system. I know you have a problem with the year I have because of the BCM and I have had a problem with mine. I set it to a rip off company in Jacksonville and they tried to scam me saying I needed a new one for $1200. I made them send it back and I had marked the inside of the box with MY VIN and don't pull any dirty shit. They sent it back, I took it apart and cleaned the back side of the PCB with scotchbrite and and heated every solder joint. It's worked perfectly ever since. Before that it would leave the ABS light on after I started it sometimes. It never does that any more. Just be careful to only heat the solder until it just barely melts the solder...do not overheat. Thanks for the great vids. One other thing....the fuel senders. Sometimes techron works for a while and sometimes not for long at all. I know guys that have changed the senders and it is a royal pain in the arse. And it wen right back to not reading the fuel right. I pretty much put techron in mine about every third tank. I ran it empty a few times and surprised it didn't wipe out the pump....they don't like to run dry

What about a video on the names or part numbers for smaller items like the little plastic place screws for the roof housing . The little rebits if that make any since. I'm new to corvette

Thanks again for the good information, on my driver's side the tightening of seat belt does not work, after pulling it all the way out, as it retracts back i do not hear a ratchet sound, it does work on the passenger side, I can find no video on fixing this, can you send me in the right direction, going to auto cross at the end of April, thank you!!!!!

I’m starting to look at buying a c4 or c5 (or c6 maybe) but I’m seeing a lot more automatics than manual transmission cars. I haven’t ever really enjoyed driving automatic sports cars, I had both manual and auto 300zx’s and MR2’s (always turbo) in the past, and the auto versions just felt like slugs. The only exception was a turbo dual clutch Jetta that I liked. How comparable is the acceleration and driving feel between the auto and the manual? All the vids I’ve found online end up comparing completely different models and I’d really like a same/same comparison before I dump 20-30 grand into a car.

Automatics on C4's and early C5's were a joke. Later C5's, while leaving much to be desired, are as good as they get.

@@kerryblueher3147 According to the book "Corvette Chronicle" a C5 with automatic did the 1/4 mile in 13.5 @ 104.7 and a C5 with 6 spd manual did the 1/4 mile in 13.6 @107.3. I wouldn't call a Corvette with an automatic beating a Corvette with a 6 spd manual, in a 1/4 mile drag, a joke.

It all depends on your driving style. In straight line pulls, the automatic is the equal to the stick. Where the automatic falls down is in the twisty bits, or on a road course...it simply can't change fast enough to compete with the hands-on control of the manual in that environment. Even the C6 and C7 automatics feel numb and a bit lost on the track. Again, for 1/4 mile runs, either will work--sometimes the auto is even faster--but for actual DRIVING, I recommend the manual. An even simpler answer to this question...the A4 transmission cars came with either a 2.73 rear gear or the optional 3.15 gear ratio. The 2.73 is a slug. The 3.15 is a definite improvement but also leaves a lot to be desired. Many A4 owners opt to install a 3.42 gear diff themselves, which came as standard on all MN6 C5s including the Z06.

@@sharonw2475 : more like 13.1 @110 mph in the quarter for the 6 speed. Check magazine road tests at the time. Also, the 6 speed gets significantly better gas mileage while being quicker......the best of both worlds. It is easy to feel the difference in driving too. This all assumes both are stock.
