Mini Super Nintendo, Mini NES, Mini Mega Drive, Mini Fridge, Mini Cars, Mini Golf... WHAT ELSE IS GOING TO TURN MINI. Well, it turns out to be the Commodore 64, in the shape of the C64 Mini from Retro Games Ltd. So what is this thing? Why does it exist? Is it any good? What's inside? What are the C64 Mini Games?? All this and more will be answered within this very video.

Firstly, no apologies for emphasising the "P" in Temple of Apshai. It's how I roll. Secondly... The SID emulation sounds fine from this, and the screen response is negligible. Thirdly... Here's a quick overview of the specs (according to the website); High Definition output at 720p via HDMI Pixel Perfect graphics at 4:3 ratio, with full width, CRT filter and US/Europe display mode options Save game function 2 USB ports: plug in a USB keyboard and use as a fully functional home computer with C64 BASIC, or add a second joystick for 2-player games Supports software updates via USB flash drive

Peter, was there any latency issues with the device? 8 bit guy tested his unit, albeit a European/PAL unit, and there were latency issues (obviously to be expected) but does you PAL unit, on our little island, have some jankiness to it? Obviously it'll get sorted with firmware and future optimisation but people often don't support something if it doesn't work great out of the box unless they are hardcore lovers of a device.
@Nostalgianerd
@Nostalgianerd 6 жыл бұрын
No, I meant "part of the course". As for latency... it was negligible. The problem is, its hard to differentiate between the latency caused by the TV itself and the device, so I didn't bother with any further testing on that part.
@LyingSecret
@LyingSecret 6 жыл бұрын
In the context you used it in, it really should have been 'par for the course'. 'Part of the course' isn't even a phrase :P Unless you're talking about a literal part of a course, such as a section of a golf course.

I wasn't making it an issue of grammar, just use of an existing phrase. It's also not the point of the video but it was a point to be made anyway (and getting an entire phrase correct isn't pedantry), but sorry for having something to say Sir, god of KZfaq comments Mr Andy Merrett, Bsc Ssc.

I got mine over the Easter weekend and took it over to my mates place. It has been 20 years to almost the exact month that I took over my c64 the first time to my mates place so I thought it fitting that I was doing the same with this system. Overall, it's fun. It's certainly not the same system we were familiar with as kids, but the inclusion of Super Cycle was very nice! Unfortunately, there is a noticeable lag between the joystick input and what happens on screen, so any arcade style game suffers here. That really was the only let down we had. I can't wait to see what updates might bring in the future, or heck, maybe the hacking community could improve on the system significantly. After all, it is 'just' a Linux box at heart!

Yeah; it's an ugly, toxic scene these days. It seems as bad as C= was at least _how_ bad C= was, was a rallying point, a common cause. Now you've got OS4 fanboys fighting with Morphos fanboys, Vampire guys fighting with "real" hardware dudes...it's just an awful mess. All I want is a souped up A3000 as a daily driver, is that so much to ask?

I have the full sized TheC64 and I love it to death, it's so cool. Of course the firmware has been updated a lot now, and you probably also know that now loading other games onto the unit is very easy and straightforward. I suspect that noise your unit makes when you turn it on could indicate a hardware fault, my unit does not do that and never has. Still, they are great units, especially the full sized one.

Nostalgia + deceptive advertising = money. That's why the fake keyboard exists. I wouldn't buy from a company that uses that tactic. Plus, there's the fact that it's considerably more expensive to mold the shell with a fake keyboard. Put it in a plain shell, and spend the money elsewhere. * *But then it doesn't look nice in thumbnails and snare people with nostalgic feelings into not reading the full product description before they click "purchase" And then those folks open their package on Xmas morning and their tears stain the carpet forever, and they have to buy new carpet because they cry blood like a religious ikon or cry acid like Alien (what say you? The alien doesn't cry acid in the movie? Well, watch Titanic with an alien and then tell me they don't cry acid. I had to buy a new couch and replace my pipes and buy my downstairs neighbor a new ceiling.) Lolz

I agree on some level with you on the mini. I actually have one and although it runs fine (no lag, crashes or anything) the support for USB devices lacks at the moment The joystick is horrible, to stiff and in precise. I think tomorrow the first firmware update will be released and hopefully it solves some issues. As a side note crashes reportedly are caused by weak power supplies, especially if you use USB drives or keyboards it draws more than 1amp.

I'm an Amstrad man myself, love my 6128, its lush... But if they ever decided to rehash it as a "console" type affair like this, meh, I'd leave it, but if they rehashed it as a working computer, like it had a working keyboard, 3" disk drive with the satisfying inserting disk "clunk" click (I'm thinking that a 3" disk is a big arsed adaptor for SDs, not an actual drive that uses original 3" disks), and has modern connectivity (HDMI, USB etc), I'd be on it like cheese on a pizza! :) Oh, and no shitty menus like that, switch on and straight to Locomotive BASIC, then, if required, run a command to access games on an SD or USB.

The actual hardware on a CRT is of course the best solution, but some of us don't have that luxury having long-since sold our systems. If the full-sized C64 replica is released and isn't run via emulation then that would be a suitable alternative. As it stands with this one, there is no real difference between emulating on it or on a PC.

TheC64 Joystick is a clone of the C64DTV Joystick that a clone of Competition Pro 5000,I have swapped C64DTV stick with TheC64 stick. The joystick is very cheaply made and most of the the time it as a mind of its own and if you push left and it goes left and up.and the stick can break.the stick has a very long screw in it when the C64DTV only has a small one,so I don't know why they are using a longer screw. and the spring is bigger.The spring in the C64DTV looks like a C64 key spring... :) I put a elastic band under the red washer to make the joystick abit stiffer and it made it feel better and stops it going left and up.

One major issue I've ran into already is any of the functions that require the shift key, such as $, ", etc. produce extremely weird characters, not the shifted function of the key pressed, I have managed to load and run a couple of old C64 games, however they don't work properly without the keyboard, and trying to use the stupid on-screen keyboard sucks and is extremely slow trying to toggle through with the joystick...obviously someone didn't actually try to play any games or do any actual BASIC commands on the emulation system itself....hopefully maybe they'll do another update soon with a fix.

I found its in desperate need of a major firmware update, and the included joystick is absolute garbage. Otherwise it seems ok, but I'm kind of regretting not going down the raspberry pi path. Also a big thumbs up for the kittens, Octavius and regular.

ehh. 6502 is not a register based design. It's a register + memory based design; A lot of it is built to work directly in memory. For instance I've seen random number algorithms performing shifts on 32 bit values. Does that involve loading 8 bits at a time from memory to a register? No! You perform the shift directly in memory, with the carry bit set as a result, then perform the second shift. This is aided by zero page memory, and the fact that 6502 design demands single cycle memory access. (the implications of which is that memory access isn't much different in performance to working with a register.) Also, data bus width is irrelevant to code complexity. It affects performance, but doesn't make coding more difficult. You only need to look at a 65816 or 8088 to realise that; both are 16 bit devices with an 8 bit data bus. 16 bit registers are certainly nice, but on an 8 bit CPU? Still going to be a headache if your core logic can't operate on 16 bit values. And if it can? congratulations, you're using a 16 bit CPU, not an 8 bit one. 16 bits of address space is minuscule by the way. 64k? You can fill that much memory really quickly. eh. Never liked 8 bit CPU's that much anyway, but... If your complaint is entirely down to register size and address calculation issues... My guess is you're not using a 6502 very effectively. I mean, I've run into some messy stuff programming an 800XL, but that's the least of it. Dealing with screen RAM, even in an 8k graphics mode is not some massively complex task...

@LeeBondo
@LeeBondo 6 жыл бұрын
8 bit guy did a latency test on his. it was around 0.23 seconds for the picture and about 0.60ish for the sound to catch up I believe but he was using a PAL model in the USA so....
@reggiep75
@reggiep75 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I watched his review when it was published and he was aware of his being a European/PAL product, hence his good and thorough testing when he was aware of the latency issues. I was just curious whether Peter's C64 mini was suffering with the same latency issues even in a PAL region to get a feel, if the issue was the same or even non-existent. No doubt new firmware and optimisation will minimise problems but if the product is a bit janky out of the box, people may opt to not support it and it dies which would be sad unless the manufacturers were open with their customers and said 'We're aware of issues, region latency issues and new firmware will sort that soon!'
@nekononiaow
@nekononiaow 6 жыл бұрын
These numbers are downright appalling, it is regrettable that no more was said about latency in this review. To put things in perspective this means that between pressing a button and the corresponding on screen action, 10 frames get drawn. On the original machine you would have maximum one or two frames of latency. This is bound to make playing fast paced 50 Hz games rubber banding nightmare. I will definitely not buy for this reason alone. Why playability is not the decisive factor in the reviews I have seen so far is a very disappointing mystery to me. A side by side comparison with the original hardware of the playing experience was also a must. We do not buy these things to line up our shelves (I hope at least).

Laurent Giroud - The latency issues were my primary concern too, together with modern HDMI TV's and their latency issues too. If the C64 mini was decent, I'd opt to play on a 21 inch CRT, but not enough people have mentioned the latency issues, that may well only be temporary issue, but we can only hope!

reggiep75 the latency issue is my #1 complaint. I find several games almost impossible to play at the moment, and it is not my screen. No lag with nes/snes mini on it.

I'd spew if I bought this my original c64 was hard enough to work out, I was born 1985 and this was like mad to me flashy tapes and prompts just didn't have a clue at the time, Then i had a 3do fz10 I'll say i was not a rich kid but I'm from the valleys just had a deal for Xmas on the end of line stock, original need for speed was a blast i loved that console I also enjoyed sim city on the Saturn and i done a 24 hour xmas mario 64 run to 70 stars, im bit of a strange one really with what I've liked but c64 with california games or paper boy drift racer loads of good titles.

hmmm interesting package, although unless fussed about the case one you probably be just as well off buying a raspberry pi or emulating on a pc. Shame the joystick is a comp pro in looks only and lacks the microswitches of the original which is ultimately one of the main reasons for it being highly regarded

The poor choice of games puts me off this. I know it's probably down to licencing but where is Last Ninja? Turrican? The Detective? They could fit every single C64 game ever made onto a tiny SD card.

Licensing ,sure yes but also they couldnt track down a lot of the original games programmers ..and with Ocean games..who knows who owns those now.Infogrammes bought Ocean,then they renamed themselves "Atari"..Then fuck knows who came after that.System 3 are still around..i guess they couldnt get a deal going with Mark Cale.

Well here it costed like £85 (sweden). I had probably waited to buy it. But it was convenient released a day I was alone for the first time at home, and I was like what the heck, atleast I am supporting them. It is quite nice actually, but need a firmware update to make it easier to put games in, and also make it possible to switch between port 1 and 2 controller because now some games wont work due it is using port 2, and the joystick only use port 1 all the time (probably can be fixed if you have two joystick). 6/10 is a fair score.
