I love that you showed WHY we use this. I’ve heard it isn’t used as an original cast on because it isn’t very stretchy, so I was confused why I should learn it and how I would use it practically. Thanks so much! I love making sweaters, and I think I just made loops for underarm prior to this. You’re a wonder teacher Stephen, thanks for sharing all your knowledge!

The cast on my grandmother taught me 60 years ago. My go to, I can make it tight or loose. I’d never heard of any other cast ones til recently! My granny always told me to twist the stitch you’re making though - she said it made it neater and stronger, she’d be 108 now so I guess she knew a thing or two 😂

Yes, I've also seen instructions that say to twist the stitch as you put it on the needle - and other instructions that say to go through the previous stitch, rather than between the previous stitch and the penultimate stitch. I have seen one person recommend a long tail cast on for most jobs and this cast on (which I've always called a two-needle cast on) for lacework.

As a British knitter, this is the first cast on I ever learnt and my go to method unless a pattern calls for a different one. You demonstrated it beautifully 😊

thank god. this is my first top down sweater with sleeves divided off and the pattern says NOTHING about flipping. you explained exactly what i needed.

I was taught to turn the stitch when putting it on the needle, is that going to make a difference?? I also knit the sleeves first once I get about an inch of body done... It's less "fiddly" & bulky and I'm always assured that I won't run out of yarn mid sleeve & have one shorter. 🤷

What is the light gray sweater you are wearing here? Is that Dustland? I looked in the show notes but did not find the answer there. Thank you for this tutorial! I would love to know how to "cast on back backwards" without having to turn to the wrong side, I have seen a discussion of that in comments on the Twists & Turns shawl but no demonstration of how that is done. Just in case you knew and thought to make a video of it 🙂

The first cast on I learned 30 years ago! What would be the advantages of the cable CO over the backward loop method? Thank you and have a great day!

I find the backward loop can be a bit tight to knit into on the next row (or round). And if you have several of them you can end up with a some loose yarn (for say 4 stitches you could be looking at a quarter inch or so of loose yarn).

This cast-on is my usual cast-on. If a pattern doesn't specify, but only says 'cast on x stitches', I use the cable cast-on for it. (I am not a fan of the long-tail cast-on). I did not know it was called 'cable cast-on' in English, I thought of it as just one of the 'knitted cast-ons' (the best one of the three I know).

I've always called it a "two needle cast on", as opposed to the long tail cast on which I call a "one needle cast on". "Knitted cast on" makes sense, too.
