So much emotional whiplash. One minute, pain, suffering, grief, and rage. The next minute, "Drink cactus juice... It's the quenchiest!" It's why I love this episode.

Glad you noticed how big of a deal Aang killing something was. He values life so much he doesn’t even like meat, so you know losing Appa really got to him

This episode is so powerful. You must understand that by this point, Aang had: 1. Lost all of his people 2. Lost his father-figure 3. Was loosing what was remaining of his culture and religion (as seen in the Mechanist) 4. And had not only lost his one remaining living link to his past, but his Spirit Animal It is no wonder he out-right kills the vulture hornet with no remorse, but also almost wipes out the man responsible and his family.

I really love how katara is the only one who can calm aang when ever his emotions gets the best of him everytime his spirit to the avatar state gets him to uncontrol his bending.

"Drink cactus juice! It'll quench ya! Nothing's quenchier(does the worm)"It's the quenchiest!" Momo high on cactus juice is hilarious with the giant pupils. "It was YOU! YOU RATTED ME OUT!" (Momo buries his face in his hands and cries, as if admitting it). XD! Favourite moment.

The next episode is called The Serpants pass. Also, at 15:17, I know exactly how many, but I can say, it'll be quite a long journey for Appa and Aang to get reunited again.

Remember how Aang was devastated when he discovered his mentor’s remains? Appa and Momo are Aang’s only LIVING connections to his people. With Appa taken, that’s emotionally devastating in a HUGE way. Don’t think he meant to go into the avatar state; he was so upset that his emotions triggered it. Tell me you felt the blood in your veins freeze or that your skin was crawling when Aang shouted “TELL ME WHERE APPA IS!!”

The cactus juice is based on the peyote cactus found in the southwestern US and Mexico that has basically these same effects.

What's heartbreaking for me, was this was the mid-season finale, and my only access to ATLA was a pirated DVD from S1 to S2E11. I could never catch Avatar on TV because my cable didn't have Nickelodeon at the time, so I had to wait a few more years till I could watch the rest of S2. I was able to watch it only after S3 premiered hahaha. Now I'm just binging and re-binging the whole series on Netflix or with YT reactors.

Appa was all Aang had left, the airbenders were gone, Monk Gyatso was gone, the only friend from before who's ever confirmed to be alive is Bumi. Appa is Aang's last remaining link to his home, his people, and his childhood. He just couldn't with him being taken away too.

This is the second time that Katara has been the only one able to reach Aang and calm him out of the Avatar State (first time being in the Southern Air temple). Regardless of what you may think of them in terms of any potential romantic relationship, that close connection is undeniable.

This episode actually puts everybody in a spot where they lost their strongest trait/skill. Sokka lost his logic Toph lost her seismic-sense Aang lost his compassion and calm And Katara had to deal with the group falling apart. She is the only one that waivered but didn't lose her hope and sense of community. She held onto it for dear life, which, lets be honest, is the only reason they still are alive.

I have heard people say that Aang should have killed the theif when he went out of control in the Avatar State. Though I think that would have been going a bit too far for this show I do think it would have fit the story perfectly if he had injured the theif and almost killed him. That said it was only watching it here with you.that I realized the significance of Aang killing the animal that attacked Momo. Aang is a strong believer in not killing and it is well established that includes animals since he is a vegetarian.

Honestly, you can’t really get upset with AANG’s attitude though out this episode. Appa is not only one of Aang’s last surviving friends from his past next to Bumi but also, his only family from his childhood he has left. You can really understand why he would be upset at what happened to Appa. Kinda similar to how Aang wanted to check up on Bumi when Omashu was invaded.
