Jim lives pretty close, and gigs about every-other weekend in local clubs. He trades Carmine in, and uses his son Dylan on drums for the local band. @ 79, his bad back prevents him from going on the road but he still rocks. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eNWWlK-pnrasmKc.html

The whole band is grossly overlooked & underrated…Back in the 70s saw them open for Sabbath…I was still into bass & thought Tim Bogart was phenomenal…Tim & Carmine were the first to lay day the Hard Rock Rhythm section…Saw them with Vanilla Fudge back in like 68 or something…Carmine & kid brother Vinnie lived in my old neighborhood & had a studio their…The basement Rock Bands were popular…At 10 years old I was playing with one of them & it’s still one of the fondest event’s of my lifetime…Jeff Beck Mountain Ten years after, Jethro Tull, Cream, Sabbath & so many great bands…I’m glad I was a part of it…

I was a kid in the 60's also and found Cactus in the early 70's. Still a great band. I got to mic Carmines drums on the Pink Floyd Momentary Lapse of Reason tour. He recorded a lot of the album with them and they carried two drummers on that tour.

To the average listener that's true but for those of us that grew up back in the 60's & early 70's he was far from underrated , & especially when you hear his opening licks off the first Cactus LPs Parchment Farm it is more than apparent Jim was & is one of the best players in Rock.

I'd wanted to see Cactus perform live since I was about 11 (1970). I met the original members in 1972 (or ’73?) during a label meet-n-greet in Harrisburg PA, but I was mostly there to get some face time with Todd Rundgren. Finally got to see them at the Sellersville (PA) theater in September 2016. McCarty & Appice were great. I'll admit I was seriously bummed out that Bogert wasn't with them anymore-love his bass work ***AND*** his voice, but Pete Bremy turned in a great performance. Plus, he's a real friendly, smart, & funny dude on social media. Not enamored with Jimmy Kunes, even though he has a fine pedigree. He did a good job, but he was no Rusty Day. But now, with McCarty no longer in the band-one of the big reasons I'd wanted to see them-I hate to say it, but, I doubt I'll ever go see Cactus again. The era is over for me.

Jimbo and I were pals in '71 in NY, till '73. He knew my Mom from visiting and jammed blues with me (in my room) playing a Les Paul thru an old 50s Fender tweed Champ amp. Pure blues. My friend Ace Frehley (pre-KISS) was sitting there in amazement and jammed along as well. There's a tape of that jam that Ace may still have a copy of...hopefully. Jim played and hung out a lot with me during that Summer of '71. I consider him a friend, but more importantly, one of the best blues guitar players of all time.

I think Eddie and Alex Van Halen used the opening to One Way Or Another, off one of the Cactus albums, as a template for their song I'm The One, the way the drums and guitar interacted. And you can hear the same basic musical elements and interplay here between Jim McCarty & Carmine Appice. Sheer power and speed. So, although Cactus wasn't as known as some other American acts of that era (I was a huge rock fan, listened to the local FM rocker daily, and never heard these guys until a pal at work turned me onto them in the 1990s), their influence was definitely felt by other rock musos. Thanks for posting this vid. So cool to see these guys playing this hard, even just 10 years ago.

Cactus never opened for Led Zeppelin. Cactus was formed in 1970, by then Led Zeppelin were selling out the Forum and MSG with zero openers. Cactus was great but to claim Zep was afraid to have them open is ridiculous. Led Zeppelin opened for Vanilla Fudge and the Iron Butterfly. Iron Butterfly literally quit the bill after Zep's set. Stop trying to rewrite history because the band you like is underrated.

I dunno… I saw Jim McCarty many times back in the 60’s and 70’s with Mitch Ryder and Cactus. Back then he was an ungodly great guitarist, a true guitar slinger, simply awesome. Now he is a bit disappointing for me, his performance is nothing close to what he did in the day. It’s a lot like my own performance where I don’t even like to play for people now because I have slowed down so much. This was also my experience seeing Johnny Winter in his latter years, kind of sad really.

Song just aren't the same anymore to me. The old rock and roll bands are irreplaceable. Very rarely, do you ever see anybody? Take their time and make a song. Anymore. It's all just noise
