A young Ustad Rashid Khan singing in his first commercially released cassette in 1988. Vilambit Khayal: 'Kaise ki kariye bhariye din' and drut khayal: 'Aao Aao balma'. For those who hadn't heard Rashid Khan in concerts before, it was a sensational release. A star was born.

It's 1994. Listened Rashid Bhai for the first time! Believe me, I was simply mesmerized 🎉 it's just mind blowing ❤ Heard him Live many times. Totally different, unique and captivating gaayan. Listened to many in my life but, Rashid Bhai was the last stop. A perfect, complete and truly blessed 🙏 Especially raag Malkauns, Darbari, Ahir Bhairav, Multani and Marwa🎉❤ simply unexcelled, unparalleled. 100% . Nobody can come near him. Ultimate. Raagas are simply, enhancing, expanded and magnified in his gasyan

I am also exploring from when & where this great singing tradition originated. Looks impossible to track back the origin, since the written text came far later & it looks 2000 to 3000 years passed in vocal experiments itself

This is one of the greatest pieces I've ever listened to. With the entire transition from pleading in the most melancholic tone of "sun re sakhii" to almost-celebratory "aao aao aao balma," it conveys a color of life common to us all.

Well the more you understand, the more you can feel. Within Hindustani music it is difficult to separate technical skills from ability to emote, since the whole point of our music is to emote. All the skills involved are wholly meant to express emotion.

It's good that you reflect on the workings of your own mind and try to improve. I have been through exactly this same phase. You can hear the same bandish many times in passing and learn nothing. Only once you start listening intently (actively, purposefully) do you realise what is going on. That's where the learning process starts, and then there is no turning back.

You don't really have to understand music or art in general. You have to feel it .If the listener or viewers emotes ,then as a artist you have suceeded, if not then you have failed whatever your technical skills. But we as listeners should give an oppurtunity to the artists to exibit.

Sometimes you have to understand some basic knowledge of music to enjoy some type of music . Like khayal and drupad , if you dont know about tal and the raag than you cant fully understand it . The think which you write in comment only make sence for light songs but in indian classical the things is little different. Thats why most of the peouples dont even understand sastriya sangeet because they dont really know what is the meaning of this type of music .

[2] I am not saying that talent is not necessary or that it does not help, but that it is not the be all and end all of artistic endeavour, or any endeavour for that matter. We humans have unbounded potential within our genes. Thinking of yourself as "untalented" and THEREFORE UNABLE to obtain a musical education is exactly what makes you an illiterate, not your tone-deafness. Rid this stigma from your mind and go forth in giving yourself an education...

Unfortunately, it is an incredible shame that 90% of music listeners dismiss musical education and classical musical principles as a thing of taste (a taste they don't have, according to them). But it is much more than that. Without attempting to understand this music, you can have no idea what music is, and therefore your taste would be meaningless anyway. It's like a schoolboy having political opinions when he has never experienced the world. It's good to know that you are one of the few.

[1] This is exactly what I am referring to. Not the fact that you are musically illiterate, but just the very thought you have expressed in these few lines. You read my words, and you mistake their meaning. And you go on to form an opinion about those who think like I do, based upon a fallacy. I did not imply that you have to have musical talent to learn music or to listen to this. And when I say "talent", I am referring to that "inborn" ability that no-one can define but everyone identifies.

[3] , and with time, little that you experience will be without meaning. And much that you experience will hold a great deal of meaning. The vice of ignorance is a pandemic, and it is destroying the realm that our forefathers have created for us. Socrates, Balmiki, Isaac Newton, Mozart, Rabindranath Tagore, they all started out with less chance of literacy than you have had. But they have conquered the world. And they started out simply by putting their minds to it. I suggest you try the same.
