Each year an eight day intensive course of piping and drumming instruction is held at Cameron Barracks in Inverness during the Easter school holidays. The course is attended by well over 200 cadets from all over the UK. It is organised by Major Jim Stout, National Cadet Piping Executive Officer, who is assisted by an expert team of instructors. Cadets can, and do, study for a variety of awards. The course ends with public performances in Inverness and Dingwall.
The first part of this video shows extracts from a band practice on the parade ground at Cameron Barracks. The army cadets are wearing their own specially commissioned tartan (red) while the air cadets are wearing the Royal Air Force tartan (blue). This was a working rehearsal which was not open to the public, so it is fascinating to watch the band working with the course instructors.
The historic surroundings of the Cameron Barracks high above Inverness on Knockentinnel may bring back memories for some. In 1910 the first Army Class of Instruction was taught here by PM John MacDonald under the supervision of the Piobaireachd Society. The barracks were the home of the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders from 1886 until 1960.
Also included are extracts from the two public performances by the cadets. The salute at the Beating Retreat ceremony in Falcon Square in Inverness was taken by the Depute Provost of Inverness, Jean Slater.
In Dingwall we see the band coming 'over the bridge' into the town from the old Seaforth Barracks and saluting the Seaforth Highlanders South Africa 1899 -1902 War Memorial as they pass. We then see the band marching along Dingwall's High Street. The salute was taken outside The Royal British Legion by the Lord Lieutenant of Ross and Cromarty, Janet Bowen.
You can find out more about cadet piping and drumming at www.armycadets.com from where you can also download sheet music for all the music featured on this video.

@@marffvmarffv5438 thats the point, if you dont enjoy it you wont keep at it. Suggest you pick simple tunes you like and put in what grace notes you can. Then, as you get better go back and add a few grace notes starting with ones that seem to improve the tune. Later on, unbelievable as it may seem, you will b able to add or take out grace notes as the whim strikes you during the tune. Sure its a difficult instrument but think of fiddlers...several ways to play every note and finger position decides pitch

This video doesn't show it, but these cadets must be the toughest, most longsuffering cadets in the ACF. Other videos show them playing in horrendous conditions. Gale force winds, rain changing to sleet/snow and back again, temps so low the bass drum has the resonance of a piece of concrete. Well done ACFPD and well done to the instructors who are able to inspire them to such commitment.

They are well known for their marching skills. We have a bonnie little band here in Southern California, of whom I studied field show band techniques with, a Gordon Norman, (now long since retired), who had that band's now tartan pattern woven in Scotland. They have a classical drill team and classical tartan uniforms and the bagpipes lead off their march. I was a band director for 29 years and I say, you are a beautiful band indeed.

They are military so that is why their faces have that stern look. They are marching in good order, and playing very well. It's good to watch and great to listen to.

+iab_matthew111 For some reason, (I really don't know why), pipe bands adopt a military dress and style. The kilt, the hats the jackets, etc, are what is worn by military pipe bands, as well as the marching. Along with that, they pay careful attention to military comportment. That's just how it is.

Out standing. As an ex Scots Guardsman, I thought the marching and the playing was first rate. Very well done to all involved.

This is some of the best piping and drumming I have seen in a long time. Their marching is excellent. Lucky the bands that get any of these cadets as members. Super job guys and girls. BTW the tenor drum flourishing is exemplary!

I have not watched this vid in years, but tonight something triggered a memory. I have often wondered what all of those young men and women from nearly 10 years ago went on to do with their lives. If any are on here please reply.

These army cadets are as smart as any regular army band. The music is first class the lines when marching could not be straighter and everyone of the cadets just looks the part. The eyes right at the Dingwall war memorial once again could not have been done with any more respect. The best pipe band video I have seen.

I am Scottish on my dad's side of course. I just recently found out for sure we are Scottish ( wasn't sure before, thinking we were Irish). I found out my 3x great grandfather might have Bruce blood. I still need more research to find this out for sure but the paper clipping stated he as having blue blood and Bruce blood. He was born near Glasgow in 1844 and was a highlander. He came to the US in 1881 and worked in the coal mines of Pennsylvania then came to Trenton, NJ and was employed by the Pennsylvania railroad company. Then he had a grocery business.
