Weekday night drive in downtown Cairo Egypt. Downtown Cairo was designed after and has been known as 'Paris on the Nile'. Video begins in Giza and heads to the historic center of Cairo. I would love to walk and explore this area of the city in greater detail! Enjoy!
Cairo, Egypt’s sprawling capital, is set on the Nile River. At its heart is Tahrir Square and the vast Egyptian Museum, a trove of antiquities including royal mummies and gilded King Tutankhamun artifacts. Nearby, Giza is the site of the iconic pyramids and Great Sphinx, dating to the 26th century BC. In Gezira Island’s leafy Zamalek district, 187m Cairo Tower affords panoramic city views.
goo.gl/maps/4LyGbaqbwSGeqQWQ7
Cairo is the capital of Egypt and the largest city in the Arab world. Its metropolitan area, with a population of over 20 million, is the largest in Africa, the Arab world, and the Middle East, and the 6th-largest in the world. Cairo is associated with ancient Egypt, as the famous Giza pyramid complex and the ancient city of Memphis are located in its geographical area. Located near the Nile Delta, Cairo was founded in 969 AD by the Fatimid dynasty, but the land composing the present-day city was the site of ancient national capitals whose remnants remain visible in parts of Old Cairo. Cairo has long been a centre of the region's political and cultural life, and is titled "the city of a thousand minarets" for its preponderance of Islamic architecture. Cairo is considered a World City with a "Beta +" classification according to GaWC.
With a population of over 9 million spread over 3,085 square kilometers (1,191 sq mi), Cairo is by far the largest city in Egypt. An additional 9.5 million inhabitants live in close proximity to the city. The Cairo Metro is one of the only two metro systems in Africa (the other being in Algiers, Algeria), and ranks amongst the fifteen busiest in the world, with over 1 billion annual passenger rides. The economy of Cairo was ranked first in the Middle East in 2005, and 43rd globally on Foreign Policy's 2010 Global Cities Index.

Ok let me try to answer your questions as a Cairo driver. 1- Is it easy to drive in Cairo? - NO, Absolutely not especially if you like sticking to the rules. You will get very anxious. 2- How do we park our cars? - Most probably you will find a guy in the area you wish to park in, we call it “sayes”. He will get you a place to park in for about half a dollar. Don’t ask me how he finds you a parking place 😅 btw “sayes” is an Arabic word for the guy who takes care of horses at the stable. 3- What kind of public transport do we use? Why there are so much old Volkswagen cars? Currently, we have : Underground Metro, modern buses (MwaslatMisr) , old buses (CTA), Mobile application based transportation (nice small Toyotas called “swvl”), Microbuses (less nicer Toyota car, but they can get you almost anywhere). Most of them are being integrated in Google maps now. The tarrif of course varies according to the quality. So in the lower economic areas old Volkwagen are so common and practical also btw 😅 4- Do we have any driving rules? - Of course we do. But the strictness vary a lot. You don’t pass a red traffic but you can easily shift a lane or exceed the speed limit. 5- Why is it so crowded and unorganized? -Cairo is a huge governorate that comprises multiple big cities. It is very challenging to have a good efficient public transportation system and people rely on their private cars. Most of the streets don’t have lanes and even most of the drivers don’t know these driving rules. 6- Are we skilled drivers? -Most of Egyptians are. But we often fail the driving tests abroad because of rules violation. 7-Without rules, How can you drive? -That’s too difficult to explain but you can imagine that there is sort of synchronization and communication between the cars and you can read other people’s minds (btw that’s why there are so much horns) 8- Do we have a lot of accidents? -Yes. But it is getting much better especially with A LOT OF new high quality roads being constructed now. Also, the old ones are being renovated. Also Cameras and are being installed now but they are not working yet. 9- As a tourist how can I navigate? - I suggest reserving in a tourism company or have an Egyptian friend with you. Otherwise you should use Uber or Careem apps. This should be better than the conventional taxi to avoid any negotiation about the tarrif. 10- Do you enjoy driving in Cairo? Are there any upsides? -No I don’t but you get used to. Speaking about the positive sides, it teaches you boldness and self-confidence if you are an anxious driver 😅. 11-Do you recommend visiting Egypt? Where should we go? -Definitely I recommend especially in the winter the weather is Amazing. I am not a good tour guide, do you a quick search and you can find a lot of touristic attractions that fits your style whatever your style is.

The excuse that Cairo's traffic is messy because Cairo has a huge population doesn't really hold water. Tokyo is one of the largest mega cities in the entire world, and their traffic is super organized and orderly.

@@jroad7370 Thanks for opening this discussion. Let me summarize my opinion in points. Please notice that I am not urban design or transportation expert but my opinion reflects my readings and thoughts about this problem over a long time. Also, I have never been to Tokyo so I am googling information about Tokyo to compare. 1- I meant by “Cairo is a huge governorate that comprises multiple big cities” the dispersed area not the population. 2- what we often refer to Cairo is not Cairo city but what we call Great Cairo in Arabic “Al Kahera Al Kobra” which consists of Cairo,Giza and Qalyobya governorates. Their total area is about 5800 km^2.Tokyo city is 622 km^2 and greater Tokyo is 2200 km^2. 3- within greater Cairo people daily commute from one place to another for work or even shopping. For instance, my University used to be 40 km from my home and at some time My father used to work in a 100 km away city! He goes and returns everyday! 4- Cairo cities are varying in the construction eras. For example “ Historic Cairo” or in Arabic “Misr El Kadema” was founded in 980 AD and new cities inside Cairo were founded 10 and 20 years ago. You can notice the difference between the very tight historic districts and the much wider new ones. 5- An old study states that 2 million non-cairo residents goes in and leaves each day! I am not sure about the situation now. Probably worse! 6-I have been to HongKong and I must admit that the public transportation there is GREAT. But It is a very small sized city “area” compared to Cairo which makes implementing public transportation systems easier especially the buses. The population dispersion makes public transportation not worth it in Cairo (similar to several places in the US) for example when I decide to leave my car and take a bus I will need to either take 3 rides to get to the destination or to take a ride and a taxi which makes it expensive! 7- Corruption has even worsened the problem over a long period of time. 8- The government is trying to solve this issue at the moment through multiple parallel techniques. Personally, I don’t agree with a lot of them but I believe that any trial will be better than leaving this issue untouched. Finally, What do you think might solve or even mitigate this problem?

very different style of driving but you get used to it in a few weeks, rules are not the same as other countries in regards to traffic law and people tend to be more "hostile" driving if you know what I mean, no matter how much the infrastructure improves the people's driving attitude will never change.

This is very similar to India & other countries with small roads & no markings. Honking is essential because of the way they are all used to driving, no one checks their mirrors & they travel at a fairly low speed of about 30-40kmph. Honking is the only way a driver will know someone is approaching.

Well statistically speaking you have the same chance of dying in a car crash in Egypt than in countries like U.S.A, Russia or U.A.E. Around 11 per 100,000. It’s a skill you acquire driving like that, to an outsider it might seem as chaos but it isn’t really. Since cars change lanes in Egypt so often drivers are always more alert of their surroundings and have much better reaction speeds and handling skills.
