In this episode I share the general caladium care tip and propagation. While caladiums cover a wide range of species and cultivar, their anatomy and care requirements are almost similar. They are highly misunderstood in terms of care, therefore I recommend to take notes, and feel free to ask questions. This is hands down my most exciting and adventurous propagation to date, with results that are mind blowing and satisfying at the end of the video.

I have 35 caladium species and 90% of them live under direct sun and rain. You will experience some sunburnt leaves at first but be patient and the new growth will adjust. Their colors become super vibrant especially those that have any pink or red on them. Also they become much less leggy. In my experience, the size and amount of leaves depends on the size of the bulb and not the amount of roots so try not to chop the bulbs up too tiny unless you don’t mind having tiny new shoots. Also, if you want the leaves to grow bigger faster, you will need to only keep max 2 leaves at a time until you reach your desired size. Caladiums are heavy feeders so I give them fishmeal. And yes, you should wear gloves when handling “cut up” caladium bulbs. Greetings from Malaysia

@@sitisarahmohdtauhed3872 I use something that looks quite similar to Sean's forest floor potting mix for all my caladiums but I also add in some raw rice hulls as well. Coco peat, perlite, burnt rice hull (corse), raw rice hull, goat manure, dried leaves and twigs. Sorry I don't measure my mix. I just eyeball. You can check out his forest floor potting mix which is good enough but add some coco peat

Hi, from Hong Kong. We have a flower market and very recently, they sell small baby caladiums super cheaply. HKD10 for 3 and many of us go grab some and try to grow them. It is getting popular in Taiwan a few years back but never a big popular plant in Hong Kong. Now I have about 20 at my office with indirect light and A/C on for 5 days of the week and they are growing bigger and bigger every day. I love them. They are quite easy to handle and I love the big leaves with stunning colours.

I boughtba beautiful caladium from a home goods store and it was stunning when I got it. I repotted it on the patio because the plant instructions said "full sun," and "outdoor," but the thing completely scorched and died. I dissected the plant to see if there was any living material and found little yellow balls while one still had a tiny semblance of an eye. I repotted that little yellow ball per your instructions and I'm hoping I can rescue it.

It should come back to life. Now caladiums should be able to handle full sun, but they cannot take sudden transitions - as with every plant. If it was grown in shade it might be wise to move slowly over a few months to full sun

I absolutely adore caladiums. You're right, they're heavy feeders. Can try giving them fishmeal fertilizer. They make the leaves grow huge! Hilo beauty leaves can grow huge! Someone I know grow them the same way as colocasia (soaked in water) and the leaves grow about as big as colocasia leaves. They're some of the caladiums that thrive under full sun, so at the same time benefit from abit more water intake. I have mine soaked in a tray of shallow water (actually all my caladiums live in a shallow tray of water because I have too many of them to water and care for daily)

So when it dries up around the bulb does that mean more eyes will grow on the side where you originally cut?
@onlyplants
@onlyplants 2 жыл бұрын
Hmmm not fully understanding the question but growing eyes do exist already on the bulb. Think of a potato, if you look closely you will actually see random growing eyes all around it. You will need this existing growing eye to sprout a plant. But Im not sure where exactly new growing eyes form on these 😀

First of all I would rule out spidermites as a possibility. And then, you might not let the plant dry out too much. But in an indoor setting you also dont want them to sit in water (they love sitting in water when placed outside with optimal airflow etc…) they also do go dormant so perhaps yours is about to fall asleep for a bit

Definetly give your indoor Caladium morning or late afternoon Sun. What hurts them most is dry air in most climates. There are cheap meters indicating temperature and air moisture, get one, and adjust a humidifier to trigger if the % falls below 40%. It dosen't have to be extremely acurate. You just don't want much below 40%. Oh and above 50% in a house for long periods of time isn't good. Promotes molds and critters. You don't want that inside your house. So aim for 40%-50%. Propagation by cutting the bulb is easier at the end of the rest period, because you can cut them in sections, let the cut dry for a week, then plant them. ( Growers in the wet, warm tropics might not have a rest period though, so do like Sean if that's your case. )

My poor caladium has floppy leaves -- the big ones can't hold themselves up and arc over; for the biggest leaves, then the stems break. It was fine the first week I had it, then the flopping started. I thought maybe the pot was too small, needed more root room, and so replanted, but that didn't help. It was in a high sun area; moved it to less sun. I don't think I'm overwatering or underwatering -- all my other guys, big and small are fine --- HELP! Thanks!
@onlyplants
@onlyplants 2 жыл бұрын
They love direct light, some like full sun but to be on the safe side you can just place it where it gets direct morning or evening light. You can try to create a crutch for it to lean on. Sometimes the leaves can be too heavy for it 😅 and perhaps consider planting it slightly deeper. Also do fertilize them so they have stronger stems or leaves. I find them to be slightly heavy feeders. And they love a lot of moisture and can drink a lot of water when conditions are favorable for them. To be safe, give it very airy potting media that never dries out completely

I dont think sooo. You need part of the tuber with a growing bud on it to propagate. But I could be very wrong 😀
@tinapomfrey5412
@tinapomfrey5412 Жыл бұрын
@@onlyplants Yes you can, but it depends on the length of the stem. As long as you have a little bit of thickness at the bottom of the leaf stem, you may be successful. They kind of behave like pilea peperomioides, you know how you need a little of the main stem at the bottom of the leaf if you don't like doing leaf cuttings and still want to propogate? It's like that. I have a "Heart and Soul" leaf on a chunky stem, rooting in a jar on my kitchen table at the moment. She is in with some spider plant babies and is putting off roots like crazy. This is my first attempt, so I don't know if she will grow a corm, or tuber like zz plant cuttings do, or if she will even survive, but I'm going to try.

They love moisture too much to be in terracotta. You can wait for it to mature… and then find the little bulblets in the soil to propagate.

@@onlyplants I always grow my caladiums in terracotta. As a matter of fact, I over-winter them in the pot they grow in. I knock off the watering at the end of the summer, let them go dormant and store the pot inside for the winter (I live in the US, zone 6). In the spring, I resume watering. As long as the soil is kept dry, the bulbs generally don't rot and stay firm in the soil, but amazingly, I have lightly watered the spider plants that live in the pot with them, just to prevent them from dying completely over the winter, and most of the caladiums bulbs survive to sprout again in the spring, along with the spider plants! I know, its crazy, but it can be done successfully. Just watch your water.
