For those wondering that’s a 5 inch height difference.

About 25 seconds earlier Staal had Makar lined up and launch to hit Makar while he was making a pass out of the defensive zone, Makar saw it last half second and did a spin so he didn't get the blunt of Staal's hit. On that same shift as Staal is bringing the puck back into Colorado's zone, that's when Makar unleashed his lethal shoulder hit. I don't know what Staal was thinking, you tried to do that same big hit on Makar just seconds earlier and your not prepared that he might do it back to you. As far as Aho and that other players wanting a piece of Makar, I guess they weren't following the puck, if they did then they would have seen that it was Staal that wanted the big hit first. If you guys don't believe me, go watch that whole shift which was at 10:41 minutes left in the 3rd period.

I'll go ahead and play devil's advocate for the Hurricanes who wanted a piece of Makar as well as the announcers who were annoyed with that fact: Makar does appear to get the shoulder on a tiny bit of Staal's chin. That being said, there is ZERO chance he was trying to make that the principle point of contact, he just leveled him with a solid body check, shoulder (mostly) to chest. Great hit, hate to see everyone try to gang up on Makar for making a big hit, but that's commonplace in the NHL today.
