Wonder if this will help him win the Lady Byng this time around. It’s one thing to compile few PIM in a season, but waving off drawn penalties is next level gentlemanly play.

I could see Cale explaining to the ref that he wasn’t showing them up, rather, he knew he lost the edge but didn’t want to get called for what may have been perceived as a dive due to the fact they called Barzal. No one wants that rep.

Yeah in that game Ovi slipped up trying to turn hard and they called the penalty but he told the ref not to call it he tripped

I’ve seen a few players do this before as well and it’s fantastic since consistency of calls across the league is really starting to be debated 👏🏼 Don’t let hockey become soccer

It’s happened a few times before, but certainly isn’t a common thing. It’s always nice to see. Players know and lots of times especially when it comes to trips, guys just can’t hold their edge and a stick will be right there and it’s nearly impossible to tell. Kudos to Makar.

I vividly remember Giroux doing this over a high stick against the Devils a few years back. There were definitely times where this has happened. It's very interesting, for sure.

I went to a lightning and avalanche game last October, we lost in a shootout and Makar was the one to win it for the avs. On top of that they beat us in the Stanley cup finals. As much as I say I hate this team, I can’t be mad at Makar. He seems like a great guy and the amount of talent he has is ridiculous. I hope he wins many more Stanley cups in his career!

Wow, my new favourite player. So kuch respect for the game and his opponents and even his own team. Who knows, the equalizing future penalty could have hurt the team later.

Cal Makar is one of the reasons im slowly getting back into hockey as someone whos about to be 38... all my childhood heros have retired... but now i see players much younger than me who are becoming childhood heroes to kids... and Cal is one of them.

I was always raised that way to be an honest gentleman. Yes some will call it stupid by the name of the game, you should take every advantage you can, but being noble and honest will always pay you back ten fold. As a bruins fan, Cale is the most exciting defenseman in the league but this is the first time I saw such class from him, I like him alot more now.

Ive done this before in beer league, ref still gave the guy a penalty though. These NHL refs hearts grew 3x today

That's truly a classy player in Cale Makar. I remember Joe Thornton talking a ref out of a penalty once. And the accused player went over n thanked Thornton for that. Too many athletes these days look for penalties it just makes the officials in all sports look to pull the trigger on anything and everything

This is why he's my pick for best player in the league. Dude skates hard hits hard scores goals defends beyond elite and has good sportsmanship to boot. You can bet damn well if this was Crosby or Mcdavid they'd go down moaning to the refs.

So it's great and there's no knocking this, but do note that this helps Cale as well with future calls that could be considered dives. He'll get the benefit of the doubt more. So it plays both ways. Still a huge play.

people will compare this to Ovi shut down while there wasn’t no call at all but in this case, Makar shut down a play that could have really been a high stick minor if he didn’t shut it
