I used to only use fly fishing gear for trout, but I've come to really appreciate the simplicity of stream fishing with spinning gear. Last summer on a two week road trip through northern BC, I tied a silver Mepps on at the beginning of the trip and had no reason to change hooks the whole trip. I do also keep some spoons in my box though, cast farther and can be counted down deep which is occasionally beneficial.

My father taught me how to fish for trout from my earliest memories-so, over 65 years ago. You sir have got it-as good of a tutorial as I have seen. If I am going to pick on anything it is that the use of weight is way over-rated...do not use any if at all possible-only as absolutely necessary.

I replace the treble hooks with inline single hooks or siwash. In C&R streams just crimp down the barb.

Bringing the spinner down stream makes sense. All the trout in rivers I catch are usually on the way across the channels. Problem I will have is the rivers here are faster flowing.

When they swallow the hook I cut the line as close as possible to the mouth of the trout and release them, unless they're bleeding heavily. Most hooks will rust out eventually.

I recently have been using spinners for trout here in central wisco and most of the time it seems like it spooks them whenever it lands. Any tips on having that not happen?
@calebwistad
@calebwistad 9 күн бұрын
Just cast past them as far as possible and use a lighter spinner with feathers or hair. That will soften the landing a bit.

Nice detailed video and very good presentation. At ~4:42 you talk about how wonderful the Eurotackle Micro Finesse braided line is and at ~17:21 you mention Sufix 832 braided line - are both lines equal in your opinion ? or which one do you favor most ? Also at ~14:09 you show a wet fly that you use on your spinning rod !! which is exciting to me as I didn't think it would be possible. Is that maribu tail prince nymph a weighted and what size were you using?
@calebwistad
@calebwistad 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Thomas. I prefer Eurotackle micro braid but it only goes up to 8lb test. If I want 10 or 15 I usually use Sufix 832. The fly was a weighted bead nymph. I think I picked it up at Superior Fly Angler in Superior WI. And yes, it works great! Good luck out there!

@@calebwistad More like "impossible to beat". A couple years ago my brother and I fished a little brook trout lake in the Boundary Waters. He is a phenomenal fly fisherman-and he caught lots. But I was using salted minnows-on a plain hook with a small split-shot right at the hook. I was casting to shore and jigging back to the canoe. I was catching a fish every cast-lost count...15-20 inch brookies!
