I got out with the clothes I was wearing and my dog. She doesn’t let me out of her sight now. It’s so sad. People are still up there trying to find their pets. Remember, it was a week day and most people had gone to work. Many in Chico and Oroville.

They can text everyone for a missing child's amber alert (and we didn't sign up for that) but they can't do it for fires? There is no excuse for that

@Chinookman
@Chinookman 5 жыл бұрын
I sort of agree but we have sirens send if they go off I really don’t know what they’re going off for. We have what’s called Seminole Alert in text and it’s excellent. So honestly if the sirens went off I’d be checking for a text from that system. But they also use email and the Next Door App with an extensive community outreach presence on the app. We have severe weather and possible tornados as well as lightning like you can’t imagine here in the Orlando area. So that includes fire watch towers I can almost see from my home. Our neighborhood was nearly wiped out by fire 3 years ago or so. I believe the sirens wouldn’t really have told people what was happening.

There's a strong message here about preparedness, self sufficiency, and gutsy determination of able bodied people. When these urban / forest interfaces go up, don't depend on the firemen to come save you or your house - they're completely overwhelmed and will be focused on evacuations. It's up to you to have a plan, make a stand or flee.
@janbadinski7126
@janbadinski7126 5 жыл бұрын
To add to your statement, there needs to be a procedure in place to evacuate the elderly that live there. They can't do it alone, it's why so many older citizens died, may they rest in peace.

Cal fire wasn’t there to put out fires. It wasn’t possible to put every fire out. With the Skyway in virtual gridlock, how could they get around? I received a landline phone call at about 8:30am. It’s good that I was there. My 91 year old landlady wouldn’t have heard the phone. Wouldn’t have understood it anyway. She still wanted to go home as we were driving through flames on the way out of town.

Who runs the town of Paradise? What have they been doing, when there have been so many fires in California and nothing has been done to protect the citizens of Paradise, not even a proper warning system. This smells like something that needs to be investigated by the State government. I live on the East coast, but I am angry, and also very sad. Tomorrow is Thanksgiving. This is unnatural and unacceptable.
@gretchenblitzmadel8563
@gretchenblitzmadel8563 5 жыл бұрын
The town of Paradise is run by its citizens, of which I am one, just like all towns are. The town authorities were well prepared to evacuate all those people out of a location with limited ingress and egress, and they did a great job. If there weren’t sirens it’s because the citizens didn’t think of it. Human beings have a universal psychological trait known as ‘normalcy bias.’ We all expect things to remain normal and are never prepared adequately when something abnormal happens. I’ve lived in California all my life and fires are relatively rare and affect relatively tiny numbers of people. We fire victims made the choice to live in risky areas because it’s beautiful there. When we rebuild we will do a better job of it and have better systems in place. We were living in denial like all humans do.

Why doesn't the local government have a better system...people shouldn't have to sign up. They should have an alarm system, just like any other normal state. This is a case of total neglect of the taxpaying citizens of Paradise. There should be a class-action suit. No one has contacted this poor young woman, who can't find her disabled mother, after making several calls for help and being told she is just one of many, as though they have no concern. Can this really be the USA? It sounds more like a horror movie about a fictional town in a fictional country. WTF.

Why not a warning siren, and a TV AND social media campaign to teach people the "Evacuate immediately" signal?

We cannot expect a government to make up for common sense. I used to look around Feather River Canyon and think "How would they stop it?" The answer... They could not. During the Saddle Fire I asked my co-workers if they were concerned as our house was just one zone away from being called. They laughed and said "In 2008 they came around and told us to evacuate." I said "Yes, but the fire marshal said on TV yesterday it is your responsibility to know your zone...if you expect them to come tell you, this is someone who is supposed to be fighting the fire." People were still waiting for their government to help them and this time even with horns people WOULD have died. It was that fast. No elderly person without a car who uses a walker or wheelchair would have had time or been alert enough to evacuate. This one was the unthinkable and people thought their government would not let this happen. Even with more strict measures in place sometimes common sense is required. The girl's mother perished in the fire. She could not MAKE mom get in the car. Will she carry guilt and shame for the rest of her life? Should she have died too?

I agree. Katrina taught me to never rely on the government, especially when you have a plan in place for dealing with this scenario. I stil cry over the loss of life in this event, 88 people confirmed dead. Some things were done right, though, a shout out to the teachers, and the hospital personnel for evacuating safely with no deaths, even the hospital evacuated without flaw or complication. This issue is too sad.

In the 50 years that I have been watching the news, it has gotten so much more of a rightward slant. BBC is a public broadcasting statement but despite being funded by the public, their point of view is that of the management huge corporations. You can tell that by the way she blames " Forest management.". Forest management has not changed enough to explain this. The forest have changed with climate change but that turned out not to be the main problem in this case. Pacific gas and electric took hundreds of millions of dollars in profit and let maintenance of their power lines and transformers filed by the wayside. The paradise fire was started by a faulty transformer exploding and throwing out Sparks in an inaccessible part of a deep canyon near Paradise. The fact that Pacific gas and electric, an entirely private company, was left to regulate itself thanks to 30 years of Reaganomics. They decided it was more important to take massive profits than to maintain their power lines. Considering all the pain and damage they cost all these people, they got off rather lightly. They had to play guilty to 84 count of manslaughter and paid out much less thanwww.cbsnews.com/news/pg-e-pleads-guilty-manslaughter-paradise-california-fire-84-counts/ it cost their victims.

This was a planned genocide . The fires were not normal or naturally created. Covert exotic weaponry was employed. Several have captured video of strange beams pulsing down from the sky, this would be in keeping with the way Directed Energy weapon's lasers operate. The military has made no secret of the fact this technology exists and has even publicly demonstrated it, of course with the cover story that it was invented to destroy enemy missiles. Shills will debunk and ridicule this statement of mine, but the truth of it still stands and any unbiased inquiry into will lead the intelligent observer to the same conclusion.

@@aaron-xi8dq One man did exactly that, his house survived. The water wouldn't have been turned off, it's ludicrous to think the water would have been turned off. Many people were at work when all this escalated. This wasn't some government conspiracy. This town wasn't deliberately burned to satisfy some conspiracy. It was a wildfire. They happen. It was started by sparks from power lines that ignited the grass fire it was.

I wonder to what extent a lot of this fire spread because residents chose to just leave and expected the government to deal with it - not saying they are at fault, but if this guy was able to fight off the inferno with two garden hoses, it really makes you wonder...

I think it depends on the winds too. Maybe he got lucky and the bulk of the fire was a drive by. He only had to hose the property to prevent the embers from flaring up. If the wind of the fire is coming straight at you, you're fucked, not even water can extinguish it (saw it on documentary when firefighter had to fight strong wind+fire hotspot).

Why are so many dead? Hm. No matter how you slice it it's when the people in charge can both do whatever they want and don't have to care about the people. They Purposefully wanted to slow traffic on an evacuation route for years. I imagine they thought it had been a while and it probably wasn't going to be a problem. Slow down traffic and people might stop more often and provide businesses with money. People who live there KNOW you the government switched the road from having several lanes it went to having two lanes on one side. And only one lane on the other side of the road. Maybe the missing list us so high because they don't want to admit the actual level of their choices. And then they'll say those people were killed by everyone else because of global warming. Yeah. More like CYA. For every person who died brutally in their vehicles the people in charge are their murderers.

They didn't have enough personnel to handle many problems. At this time there are only 25 people known missing, the rest have been accounted for. I'm sure there will be many changes to this community as a result of this horrible incident. The girl who's mother died, she tried to get her mom evacuate but at the time it wasn't mandatory, they couldn't have foreseen how things turn out. I wish I could hug her, I'm sure she's feeling plenty of guilt but things were not under her control or anyone else's control.
