Fleabag, Broadchurch, Derry Girls, Ghosts. If Happy Valley ever gets picked up by a US streaming service again it's really good. Catastrophe and The Fall are both really good from this list. You might also find Downton Abbey surprisingly addictive.

I'm a bit suprised that the six series of Line of Duty apparently didn't become popular in the US. It is the highest rated crime series on many critics' lists, and garnered big followings in the UK, as well as in Australia, NZ, S Africa, Canada, and in several EU countries.

@@Jamie0503 Not sure what the Finale has to do with it though, seeing as it comes right at the end, lol. I mean, there were multiple series released long before that final season ever aired so there was plenty of time for Americans to get into the show but it just never really landed over there. Now that that finale has been aired, regardless of what anyone actually thought of it, given the publicity surrounding it and the "big reveal" it definitely won't catch on because as soon as you take any interest in The Line of Duty now you are hit with so many spoilers. They're worth watching those early seasons in their own right in my opinion anyway, if you can watch them in their own right and not worry too much about the main storyline running underneath it all

Thank you. As a person in the UK I haven't watched many of them, although my daughter was obsessed with Dr Who. I liked Downton Abbey, even though I knew it was a high-class soap! What I would like to suggest to you is an older multi million pound TV programme series called 'Horatio Hornblower'. Based on books by CS Forester, this exciting drama series chronicles the life of a shy young man joining the British Navy as a midshipman at the very late age of 17yrs, not long after the Battle of Trafalgar. We follow his career, as he grows into a man, fighting the French during the Napoleonic Wars at sea. It was filmed for television (ITV), received many, many awards. CS Forester researched well and was given access to sealed, historical, Naval Records at the Admiralty before writing the books. The manners and times are different, the codes of chivalry certainly are of another, nostalgic, Age, even between enemies, but the action is continuous and, exciting. The sailing ships are a marvel to see in action and the photography and locations wonderful. Each episode is about 2 hours each. Horatio Hornblower is played by Ioan Gruffudd. If you think you may like this series, you can see single episodes on Amazon Or treat yourself to the Complete Collection from Amazon for about £10-£12. Sorry, Advert over, got carried away!!! Happy Christmas to you and the best for 2023. Oh by the way you asked for film clips we like a while ago. I like the A Bridge too Far' film clip 'We Cannot Accept Your Surrender'. Almost as good a Rourkes Bridge!

...and in the same vein: Sharpe. Sharpe I can highly recommend as the land-based alternative made-for-TV series of movies based on Bernard Cornwells books set primarily in the Peninsular War with Wellington's forces facing off against Napoleon's. The series of historical action adventure follows the titular Richard Sharpe who starts out as a common Sergeant (there's books with him as a Private) who one day saves Wellington's life and is 'thanked' by being raised to a commission as a Lieutenant. We follow his career and advancement, though as a commoner and officer he is not thought of as a 'gentleman' so faces major issues navigating the military politics of the age. Richard Sharpe is played by none other than Sean Bean - it is my belief that ol' Beany used up so much of his exceptional luck while playing Sharpe that he now has to die in literally everything else! Sharpe has a wonderful supporting cast, led by his burly Irish Sergeant Patrick Harper (Daragh O'Malley) and the rest of the 'chosen men' - a bunch of crack shots who don't usually get on well in the regular army but, like Sharpe, work well as Skirmishers with their Baker rifles while most troops are still using muskets. Sharpe's chosen men are pretty much the first 'special forces' and often work behind the lines supported by intelligence officers and partisans. There are, of course, any number of beautiful women who fall for Sharpie's charms along the way from Partisan leaders to English Roses. It's basically a rip-roaring adventure where Wellington sends Sharpe off on mission after impossible mission where he proves his worth time and again. Now that's Soldiering! Oh - it's also the reason Boromir cut his finger with Narsil in Fellowship of the Ring, yes it was a Sharpe reference - Still Sharpe!

Coincidence! I texted a mate the previous night that I was remembering a sketch from the series 'Monty Python', of a whole team or group of male philosophers, all wearing white flowing toga's and sandals on their feet, as part of a game of football or soccer! When the whistle was blown, the ball was kicked into action and the philosopher's with hands behind their backs, as they wander slowly about, together in very deep conversations, discussions and reflecting, completely oblivious of any spectators & audience expecting to watch and enjoy the game they'd come to see!

Sadly, we lost another one of our brilliant satirists, John Bird, who used to partner the late John Fortune in some marvellous interview sketches. If you like crime dramas, The Fall is excellent. Also, if you are into medieval historical shows I highly recommend "The Last Kingdom" on Netflix. The production was a little low budget (particularly the 1st series before Netflix got involved from series 2 onward) but the writing is incredible and the historical accuracy, for a TV show, is impeccable. Seriously, as someone who has studied Early Medieval English history, you could almost include the script for The Last Kingdom on any syllabus for the period. Very clever how the writers (and mainly the excellent Bernard Cornwell) managed to so expertly weave proper history in with a compelling, fictional storyline to make it highly enjoyable. I don't know anybody who has watched The Last Kingdom and hasn't actually fallen in love with the show and many of it's characters. If you are into medieval type shows, if you want to learn about English history, and you are looking for something to binge watch then I highly recommend checking it out - there are a total of 46 episodes that are divided up into 5 series, so quite easily binged and, trust me, once you start with TLK you will almost certainly binge watch the entire thing!! Finally, if you want another cracking historical show, albeit one that is set a little more recently, then I recommend having a look at "SAS: Rogue Heroes" which is all about the formation of Britain's tier 1 Special Forces, the Special Air Service (SAS), in North Africa during the Second World War. , It so far has just one series, only having been aired a couple of months before Christmas this year, but it is excellent and it is written both by a proper historian of the SAS, Ben MacIntyre, and the same man who wrote Peaky Blinders, Steven Knight. Only thing is that it is a BBC show and I do not know how you watch it outside of the UK - apparently in the US it is being shown on Roku ? Well worth seeing if you have access to Roku (or a vpn 😉)

I have never heard of "Catastrophe" either. I would recommend "DERRY GIRLS" and also "MOTHERLAND" if it is available. They are both about families but very differently funny. In fact a third comedy programme which may not be well known in the States is an older one called "OUTNUMBERED" with Hugh Dennis and Clare Skinner, (plus three child actors who grow up through the succeeding series/seasons and are encouraged to ad-lib) and written by Andy Hamilton. This is just brilliantly observed life in the raw for two parents (one a teacher) trying to bring up kids who are probably smarter than them; there is nothing 'cutesy' about it like so many sickeningly sugary US family shows I have glanced at and never wished to see again. It is very funny indeed and needs to be watched in chronological order. It was a BBC production so I don't know how that affects availability.

It’s slightly irritating that the summary of Downton made no mention of the fact that the reason it’s so popular is that it’s equally centred around the ‘downstairs’ characters (the servants, cooks, butlers, footmen etc) and their world within the estate and how the lives of the upstairs and downstairs characters intertwine. It’s sort of like a period soap opera but with class (if you’ll pardon the pun) and unbelievably compelling writing and superb acting.

Engish and don't watch TV. Have done in the past. Remember Monty Python's flying circus when I was young (8-12). Was an avid Doctor Who fan until the BBC decided we need a TV Lisence to watch Catch up such as BBC iPlayer. Watched the first season of Sherlock but the opening episode of season 2 had me rolling on the floor laughing. Loved Merlin. Keep meaning to buy the box set on DVD. Some of these I've not even heard of, Others I know about but have not seen, such as Downton Abbey and Peaky Blinders. We even have a Peaky Blinders themed Pub (Bar) in my city a short walk from where I live. Not been in it lol As I don't watch TV I can't really recommend anything recent, but some older recommendations would include "Torchwood" and "The Sarah Jane Adventures" Both are Doctor Who Spin offs. "Foyle's War" a detective series set during and shortly after WW2. Sharpe's (Word usually related to the theme of that weeks story, such as Riffles, Company, Revenge). Set in 1809-1818. Staring Sean Bean (Boromir in LOTR) as Sharpe.

Doctor Who is fun. Monty Python I discovered late night PBS back in 74/75 and howled with laughter. I dunno how well it holds up. Doctor Who, is, of course still running due to pick up on Disney Plus some time in 2023. I've heard of most of the others, but haven't had access to most of them.

You have never watched Monty Python’s flying circus? Dude I use to watch British shows on TV in Oxnard in the 70's all the time. If you said you had never seen the The Goodies or The Young Ones or Keeping Up Appearances I would understand but to have not seen Python is like not knowing who Benny Hill is. That is almost impossible if you grew up in Cali.

I can't help wondering if the original KZfaq videos was made using clips with free copyright clearance rather than factual statistics. I've never heard of the No 10 entry - and who on earth watches Amazon Prime? As for the pronunciation of US actress Gillian Anderson (as in Gilly rhyming with Billy') and referring to a TV series as a 'season' ... I give up!

I'm not sure exactly why Luther, Peaky Blinders and Sherlock get as much praise as they do. Don't get me wrong, i liked them all but it was certainly a case of style over substance as the series' went on. Doctor Who is Doctor Who and i've always watched it and always will. I can't quite believe there's a person alive that's had no exposure to the Pythons, outside of the films but ok. It's definitely worth watching but you might just want to do 'best of' on youtube as i'm sure it's a bit of a slower format of clip show than you'd be used to these days. While you're at it, try Harry Enfield & Friends, The Paul Whitehouse Experience or The League of Gentlemen. There's an endless amount of quality shows like this, spanning the last 50 years or so, you could go on forever. Downton is a soap. It's a well made, well written and well acted soap, with a decent budget but it's not based on any source material and it's an ITV production, which means they want to get the viewers in on every single episode because they can charge a packet for the advertising revenue (most of the other shows mentioned are BBC so they have no such need to drag in the masses) so it plays like a soap. It is well done though and if you start it (like Neighbours or Home & Away) you'll get sucked in and you'll want to see it to the end.

Might be an unpopular opinion, but the US version of Sherlock - Elementary is far superior, and that's coming from a Brit. Sherlock seems shiny and snappy on first viewing, but Moffat and Gatiss have past history of being good at setup then failing to deliver. It's a shame Elementary is slept on over here, the portrayal of Holmes by JLM is interesting and beleivale, LL does an amazing job as Watson and their chemistry together is just beautiful.
