While using a tape measure or a ruler to take measurements in the shop is the obvious answer, calipers, dividers and compasses can be more accurate. In many cases the exact measurement doesn't matter in a forged piece. It is making multiple parts the same that matter the most.

Your video are so great. You keep it simple. On dividers, as a machinist wanna be. There are 3 types. Inner, outer and regular. Anyway it is an old video but very informative.

I made myself a divider/compass several years ago from leaf spring steel. It was much more difficult to forge but the benefit was that it is as tough as nails, and maybe tougher. I never realized how useful it would be. Since it's high carbon steel, it scribes a fine line very nicely. Great vid!

That Peter Ross made compass is a gem. Very nice. I would just look at it. Here in RSA we still call them a compass.

Hey John, can you link the video with Peter you're talking about? There's a video of him talking about compasses, but it contains no actual forging. KZfaq seems to have very little of Peter, there are some videos from PW and some from old episodes of The Woodright's Shop, but that's about it. Thanks

The video of Peter's that is mentioned is commercial and so costs a few $$, but is well worth it. I have it and consider it money well spent.

Whats available seems different depending on your location. Blacksmith get togethers are the best. But auctions, estate sales and the internet are all good options

You've explain who make and how to make devider. What are this dividers use for? Cause I made a mistake buying a compass with 2 steel tip, not a pencil on the other side. Sorry for my ignorance.

Dividers or compasses with steel points are used exactly like one with a pencil. but they leave a more accurate scribe line.

I was always taught a compass was like a divider but it held a pencil, lead or some thing else for drawing circles.

Its funny you posted this today just yesterday I was scouring KZfaq for hand forged compass videos and found only two that I feel were up to standards most of them are pretty lazily made. I would love to see your take on it

I'm surprised you didn't mention inside vs. outside dividers (or hermaphroditic calipers). As I didn't see a single pair of inside dividers in your collection, so I'm assuming that you don't have any significant use for them.
@BlackBearForge

The dial calipers will do inside measurements. But I rarely have any need for typical blacksmithing.

Haha "how you measure up" He who has the largest callipers wins? Then you corrected, "how your work measures up" Ok, I get it! I'm excited to see the caliper video. Right now I use the little flimsy one you tossed to the side. I admit I'm a beginner, so still building up my tools!

Every thing in blacksmithing has to be long to keep the heat away, you must have muscles like Popeye after he has eaten spinach.
