This shovel - which is sharpened on all sides, and is made from an unusually thick stock of steel - makes an easy transition in to the role of an axe. For the weight, and the price, this is an awesome tool, and you can consider yourself well prepared for an emergency if you have one handy.

I have owned a Cold Steel Special Forces shovel for a few years now. I have used it to dig in several kinds of soil, as well as a makeshift hatchet/machete. It clears brush fairly well and chops well for it's size and shape. I agree with keeping it in your vehicle as a great piece of "Just In Case" gear.

I have two of these shovels and have just ordered the third! One is in my car, one in my backpack for any outdoors trips, and one for backup, in case they don't make it anymore :) For the screws, you can also carry a Victorinox Swiss army knife - the large screwdriver head on those will work just as well in case you don't want to carry a full-size multitool. Don't forget a small sharpening stone.

I bought mine after I saw you reviewed it and liked it, which I then subscribed to you. I used mine today to de-limb a fallen tree to chop it up for firewood. I brought it out and my father said "why do you have a shovel?" I took one swing and he said "wow that's sharp!" I use it in rocky areas where I don't want to mess up my ESSE Junglas. I have owned it for a couple of months, used it a lot, and have yet to dig with it too. I love this shovel!

Don't forget if you have a multi-tool with a file you can sharpen in the field. So if you dull it digging you still have a way to sharpen it back to a cutting tool. Good video.

Take it apart. Strip the crappy varnish off the handle with a good draw knife (I use a BK7 for all my draw knife tasks). Sand it down a bit with 180 grit just to make sure to get all the varnish off. Put on at least 5 coats of boiled linseed oil over a week's time. (I put on about 20 on mine.) Put it back together. Let it sit for another week near a heat source to cure. I love this little shovel. Good vid! This is a quality addition to all kits as long as you take care of the handle so it lasts for you.

Mine is in my trunk just in case. The "Speznaz tactical special forces" thing is a little much, though. After all it is just a shovel. I've used it as a shovel, axe and fire prod. I once used it to clear about 5 inches of ice from a catch basin. Overall, I'm more than happy with this tool!

I use a piece of paracord. I haul an old ALICE pack around, it works. I ran the cord though a couple of grommets, tie the ends tight and just hang the shovel in the gap between.Stays put.Fits flat against the pack and is covered by the pack flap.Easy peasy.

This was a copy of a Russian standard infantry shovel - MPL-50 (stands for small infantry shovel, 50 centimeters), now replaced with Ratnik version. I have one too, works well for when I camp, chopping small wood, digging holes etc.. I like throwing it just for fun, you can use for self-defense as well. It is not really a special forces shovel, I guess the special forces are trained on how to fight with it better that's all.

I'm with you - lighter and much more durable than the Gerber. I took 10-12 of these up to Alaska with me when I moved up there to teach because they fit in so many boxes, and I have had them around forever. The only one I left Alaska with was the one behind my seat in the Dodge truck. Almost everybody in the village asked if I'd leave a shovel with them.

Ive had a CS shovel for around 15 yrs. Its a great tool. I prefer an axe for axe work but this has stepped into the role in a pinch. Ive cut saplings and limbed them with the CS shovel and made shelters. My Ontario 18inch machete does it better but the shovel will do it. I also have an original US tri fold. Actually, its in 2 pcs and no longer is any good. I assume it lived a hard life before I bought it at the surplus store. I have also gotten a Soviet mpl50 shovel that the CS shovel is designed from and a Yugoslavian copy from the early 50s. The CS has a better temper and holds a better edge, the tang seam is welded instead of overlapped. Those are the 2 biggest pros over the mpl50. I would buy all 3 again.

After doing some time in the infantry ill tell you my two cents on why the e tool is useful, it can be folded into an outdoor poop stool, not trying to be funny or crude either, but this is the best function of the e tool, cant sit on this shovel, but i definitely see why this one is awesome also, depends on the mission I guess

good review. im not sure about emergency tool? its one of my everyday carry out in the sticks, I love the thing, so much so ive ditched my martindale machete, because the handle is so easy to remove, it take me minutes to make and fit a longer handle (usualy out of birch) if I have a big hole to dig, but to be honest I just use it for digging fire pits and toilets, only thing I have not done with it which I want to and that's fry an egg! (minus paint obviously) cheers from the UK

Here is what I don't lke about the cutting shouvle. I was always told to keep your knife out of the dirt becaue it dulls the blade. I would prefer to carry an axe and a shouvle, maybe because I live on a farm. For a one time use short term in a situation where I knew I could sharpen it after each use, but who wants to do that?

I can't speak on any brand, but the e tools(folding shovels) that they issue the Army are absolute trash. They're stupid heavy for their size and they break all the time. I think I have broken 3 or 4 of them in the past, maybe more, just by digging. The special forces shovel is a much better design as far as weight and durability go. You mentioned ergonomics with the e tool, and I have to say I found their handles very uncomfortable because I have wider hands. Maybe its just me though. :) Thank you for this video.

ive learned over the years that so called multi purpose items that are supposed to do lots of different things they only do those things okay but never do any one thing well so i believe in using the right tool for the job use a axe for chopping and a knife for cutting im sorry but i dont believe in using a large knife for your wood processing yes its nice to know in an emergency you can use it for that but ill always bring a axe and a knife

If I could like this video 100 times I would! Would like to see a video where you directly compared the cold steel shovel with those axes in terms of their chopping capabilities in the field. I really don't get why the US military use the Gerber Folding shovel so many cons for the benefit of a tiny bit more compactness... The German Wehrmacht in WWII had a similar shovel and clearly, the Spetnatz are going the right way... why over engineer something to make it worse and more vulnerable... www.atthefront.com/german/fieldgear/images/entrenchingtools/orig_german_etools.jpg
