This survival shovel was inspired by the Cold Steel Special Forces Shovel, which was inspired by the Russian special forces, Spetsnaz. This tool was already good but with a few modifications, it is even better. Come check it out.

Bank line is nylon, not Kevlar. I stripped my shovel head and blued it with hot vinegar and salt and oiled it while hot, so I can cook on it. One side is sharpened like a hatchet for chopping and the other side is sharpened to a 23° angle for the bottom 3/4 for general cutting and 19° on the top 1/4 for fine work like making curls. Wrapped the top 1/2 of the handle with a couple of layers of Gorilla tape then 1000lb Survivor cord with fire starting strand, fishing line, cotton strand, a brass wire and a PE strand, the bottom half with #36 twisted bankline so it can be pulled apart and smaller line used for sewing, and 100 ft of 100# deep sea wire leader for snares and swedish torches and I added an adjustable 550 parcord lanyard for better control. I also made a Kydex sheath with a spot for a ferro rod and attatchment point for a fixed blade knife and an Essee medium survival pouch filled with essentials like first aid, Aquatabs, etc. and a Sharpal credit card sized diamond plate set

Wow! You’re in a league all your own. That is impressive. Thanks for the information about the bank line. Looks like you thought this through carefully. I really like the idea of being able to cook on it. That is fantastic. when you are out are you a minimalist as far as your gear is concerned? Or is your shovel just a back up? i’m gonna have to strip mine and use the hot vinegar trick and play around with it. Thanks again for stopping by the channel and sharing your thoughts. Some great ideas. Have yourself a great day.

Ive heard that people have broken the handle. I wouldn't want to possibly weaken it

That handle is really quite sturdy. If someone broke it they must’ve been treating it awfully hard. I’m not saying it can’t be done but everything has its limits. As I use it time will tell. Thanks for sharing.

@@Pharto_Stinkus Yeah, you'd have to be doing some seriously crazy stuff to the handle to break it. It's way too short and fat to be easily breakable.

Your idea sounds great. One person gave me the idea of stripping all of the paint off and using vinegar to blue the steel so that you can use it to cook on. I could see where that might work. Thanks so much for sharing your ideas and hope you have a great week.

I should think a nice coat (or several coats) of boiled linseed oil would be a good idea on that newly exposed wood particularly where the handle attaches to the shovel head.

I dipped it twice and let it soak in linseed oil, but other finishes would work too. Thanks for your input.

Outstanding project! That’s one of those “why didn’t I think of that” ideas. 😉 I’ve had my Spetsnaz shovel for almost 25 years now. I’m on my third handle. First two were Cold Steel handles. The one on there now, I made about 15 years ago. Used the shovel to shape a piece of locust wood. It’s still going strong

If you make your own sheath for it you can include a multitude of extra items. Pertinent because the original Cold Steel sheath ain’t all that.
@toolscouter
@toolscouter Жыл бұрын
This is very true. I did get a sheath for it and it’s hanging on the wall. It protects the sharp edges but you are right it is not that great. In the future I might do something in leather but I don’t have any plans to do so anytime soon. It would be a fun project though. Thanks for stopping by and thanks for sharing. Have a great day and God bless.

craziest thing you'll read, but...I am trying to be a minimalist, so would like a spetsnaz that is pretty (shiny preferably) enough to display, strong enough to last a lifetime, and that I can also use for minor gardening - and of course for survival if that is ever needed. Any suggestions? The attractiveness of it, of course, is the least important on my list.

Thanks so much for stopping by the channel. You can sometimes find vintage military spec shovels on eBay. This cold steel shovel is brand new sturdy, and very durable. For what you get and how much you pay for it it is a bargain. One gentleman told me that he took off all the paint with an angle, grinding brush, soaked it in vinegar, to create a protective bluing, and then rubbed vegetable oil all over it. He could use it as a regular shovel, but when cleaned up nicely and vegetable oil applied, he could even cook on it. this is some thing I thought about trying to explore. Good luck on your hunt for what you need and hope you have a great day.

Welcome to the channel. I didn’t have access to parachute, packing rubber. But innertube’s are easy to find. As for your second comment. You’re being too practical. I did that project just for the fun of it if I were to be in a situation where I needed to use it I’d take the whole thing apart and put everything in my pockets. You’re right it’s better to have a pack with everything in it and then put the shovel in. But people like to see this kind of thing. Hope you come back again soon. Have a great week.

@@toolscouter I mean you could even bore out the handle, insert an aluminium or brass pipe inside nice and snug with some epoxy that's threaded at the end, then have the round ball end thread into that, then you have tons of storage that's potentially watertight and would probably make the handle stronger than before If anything

😂Ever Soviet solger has "Special Forces Shovel"😂😂! Because when you keep daun and your foe opening fire, you can't much time to deg a hole. It's better than digging the ground with a knife and hands. Since the era of the First World War, infantrymen began to be equipped with small infantry shovels.

Yes, you are technically right. If the handle were longer, I would worry about that. These handles are so short and stout that I think they will last. And, yes there are other ways to carry a fishing kit. For me, this was just a fun little project and something I can throw in the truck and use in an emergency. Granted, if I’m going for a weekend of fishing. I’m definitely taking something other than this. I do appreciate your thoughts and thanks for your visit. Have a great week.

@@toolscouterI agree …most of the integrity of the handle (the connection of the head to the handle) is unmodified. The area with the little fishing kit should experience little torsional load at all. This is not to mention that your wrapping adds strength…. I did like the idea of making a custom sheath with space for some fire starting items. A very nicely done video. Thank you for posting!
