Lisgar 613
Lisgar Collegiate Institute first opened its doors in 1843 and is located steps from Parliament Hill in downtown Ottawa. For the past three years Lisgar CI has put together an ensemble for the sole purpose of entering the CBC Canadian Music Class Challenge. This year’s group, Lisgar 613, is made up of band and string students in grades 9 through 12.
This performance of Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe” was completely organized by the students for the students! After a listening party to choose our song in June, Denali Tran-Le and Alex Wang spent the summer arranging the piece for the group and worked with the musicians in the fall to fine tune the music. The arrangers wrote parts specifically for each of their friends in the ensemble, creating a piece they knew the members would enjoy playing and would play well together. You can check out the score that Denali and Alex created together here - drive.google.com/file/d/1Ht0Y....
Ms Laura Mennill worked with the string musicians and Ms Lani Sommers worked with the winds and percussion to help them prepare for their performance. The students played this for their CBC Canadian Music Class Challenge entry and for our Family of Schools Halloween Concert as seen during the credits of our video. There will be one more performance of the piece at the Winter Music Night on December 14.
The Lisgar Film Club filmed and edited the entire video with equipment support from the Communications Technology department and teacher Ms Hillary Dow. The music class challenge is a great way for our film club members to hone their film and editing skills and all of the work was completed by student videographers using multiple cameras in one off-the-floor take! Kai Zarr and Frances Hanna worked diligently with the film crew to create this engaging video. Please listen to our entry with headphones for best listening results!
We hope that CBC will “Call Us Maybe” after hearing our epic version of the song!
