Nikolai is based off Pvt Chernov, his first name isn't mentioned I believe. All of these characters die in the campaign, Chernov dies near the end of the game, Polonsky dies(but can be saved) during the final mission of the US Campaign, obviously you kill Amsel in Vendetta, the Japanese Officer walks out of the building and is never seen again, but it can be assumed that Sullivan's strike team assassinated him as they came to save Miller.

In WaW Shi No Numa, you find coordinates on a radio that lead to Area 51, and in Der Riese, one of the radios from Maxis talks about the Americans having Element 115 at Area 51. Area 51 being known for in popculture as the place the American government hides aliens. In Black Ops 1, on Kino, you find meteorites which turn out to be Element 115, which means that 115 is from space. So when was this game not about aliens?

Shi No Numa was the first map with Takeo, Nikolai, Richtofen, and Dempsey. Zombies was getting decently popular at the time, so they added the characters to spice things up a bit probably. If you play Verrukt or Nacht, there's a lot of dead air and complete silence and Shi No Numa was when they started to fix that. It wasn't until Der Reise when we actually got more development in the story and more substantial easter eggs.

Well, Nacht Der Untoten and Verruckt were part of the campaign and maps in multiplayer. Four of these characters were in the campaign. Chernov was alive, aswell as Polonsky if you managed to save him. And you could get the Ray Gun in second mission. But It has no link, because they are named differently, Takeo and Richtofen were alive, everything was happening during the WW2, Verruckt and Nacht are set in different places, Ray Gun was made by Nazis. I just think that It's a different universe, where the element 11 appeared. If not this, 4 of the characters could be just soldiers fighting in WW2.

Well heres my theory, Dr. Maxis resurrected Ricktofen first using 115 seeing this as a success however he could not remember his own name or why he was with Dr. Maxis at the time.
