near to where I live in Germany, region Kassel, there is a stretch of mountainous "Autobahn A7" southbound and let me tell you I've gone uphill there at 10 Kp/h because some fool leading the pack fell to that speed. Autobahn in Germany means 80Kp/h for trucks, most drivers do round 85.

I know exactly what you mean I use to haul raw steel chunks from patriot forge and averaged 135k lbs and it was another animal hauling up hills thru cambridge

Here in india we haul 55ton gvw with a 300hp 6.7 cummins on semi truck. On flat highway we would do max 60km/hr. On downhill we may occasionally hit the 80km/hr limiter. On uphill it could slow down to 5km/hr or less if we have to use the crawler gear in a very steep incline. When going up Himalayas we don't load above 25ton. At 12k 17k feet that 300hp turns into 100hp. If going to the peaks of 19k we would not even load more than 15ton.

Poor guy probably hasn't been at it long. There is a trick to down shifting rapidly and he hasn't figured it out yet. But he will. Climbing a hill like that you need to stay in the powerband and keep the turbo spooled for a rapid rpm increase for the fastest possible downshift. It is most definitely an art, not gonna lie. Hauling to construction and pipeline sites on roads far worse than that I had to learn real fast and so shall he. That was a damn good save when he finally remembered to shift on that last attempt However lol.

I've only been driving a manual for about 2 months and even I know to pick up speed on hills or inclines. I just cringe at the thought of stalling out or bogging down.

Try pulling 140,000 pounds going up hill. You will tear everything up if your bang shifting

As someone who has driven a haul truck in the oilfield I can say without a doubt this is the type of terrain where camelback suspension shines it will dig in and pull where air ride will start hopping and break drive line parts locking in your power divider will help too

Velocity - momentum is key, he is taking too long to shift. RPM Gear matching speed shifts are needed ! Every second that that shush shifter is not in gear and the engine is not running at full torque you’re losing momentum and that’ll kill your chances of making it up the hill you have to be in the right gear to keep the engine it proper torque range get it in that gear at this deepest part of the hill and keep it there at nearly full throttle!!

Exactly. Once it pops in don't forget to be ready to let the throttle off a tad if you feel the whole drivetrain torquing up too much.

I certainly respect the way you treat your equipment, but your off road now. So lock in the diffs and drive it like you stoll it keeping the revs higher than you are used to. BTW, I was considered pretty good at backing up trains ,,, but you are amazing at it.

Our top weight limit now is 174000. I bet he was running with his lift axles down too. Big mistake. Ain't no where to turn around. Lock the diffs in and give er hell. Better to run too hard and make it then to be pussy footin around and get stuck. Don't show him what the Australians do, he'd never make it.

They can come out to the Pacific Northwest (Washington or British Columbia) in the winter. They'll run home with their tails between their legs. Used to haul lime on super b, s in northern alberta off road. As said you got to gun it and give it some, you can't risk it bogging down. Never got stuck apart from in bad snow.

Any oilfields ive ever been in don't have hills like this, they just full of holes and slicker than shit in the spring break up. Also, if there are nasty hills , call for a pull up the hill.
