Had the same thing happen to my axle, and this video helped :) I noticed the wobble in my rear tire when the treads were rubbing, but only when I rode forcefully. I made an adjustment to how it was set in the frame and just rode lighter. Took off the rear tire when I had the chance and yup, the axle is broken. Thankfully I only rode on it for two weeks, not two years :P

I like to hold the second cone against its ball bearings, and then thread the axle into it in place. That way, you don't get the end of the axle pushing out a bunch of fresh grease.

I like tweezers as well, greasy ball bearings would rather stick to my glove/hands than in the hub. I also like to put the axle with a fixed side in first before any ball bearings. For the extra protection of them falling through.

@AG_HP7
@AG_HP7 3 жыл бұрын
Simple, you he rid of the front derraeliur and its shifter (how ever it’s called), and you’ll have less mechanical complexity, besides more gestos mean a bit more range in the climbs, and you laso shed weight it’s a 1x11, 3x9 is not bad, assuming you have a free hub not a free wheel, id you have the free hub you can convert pretty easy to 1x9

I had used a "multi purpose grease" that was from nigrin and after a months when I opened my axel cones, I found that the bearings have nothing under them.... The grease had been displaced :(..... It looked like it also got churned and turned white ... The original colour was a bit like vaseline..... Anyways, when I took the axcel out I saw that the extra grease dot pushed into the hub..... My cups done have a seal and the cone goes directly onto the cup. Any ideas????????????.... The cone was just tight enough and lots of grease also got pushed out when installing

@@paddychamp6069 Yep. Aqua Net would be the traditional way to do it. You can also just spray isopropyl alcohol inside the grip. Alcohol takes a little longer to dry, though. To remove them, slide a tiny flat screwdriver under one edge and spray alcohol in the gap. Massage the alcohol all the way around the grip and keep prying and spraying in the gap until it slides off in one motion.

amazing vid. thanks. how do you tell how much you want the axle to protrude on each side? how exact does this measurement have to be?
@donavinnezar
@donavinnezar 3 жыл бұрын
i would say within a millimeter of eachother (so side A can portrude 5mm and side b can portrude 6mm) if you have access to vernier callipers it should be a breeze to measure portrusion
@chrislukes9037
@chrislukes9037 3 жыл бұрын
Most critical for quick release hubs -- most importantly, neither end of the axle should protrude past the outside face of the dropout (protrusion should be less than the thickness of the dropout material); otherwise, the protruding axle will prevent the nut on the QR skewer from tightening flush against the dropout.
@type17
@type17 3 жыл бұрын
For alu frames/drop-outs, with Q/R axles, I use a 5mm hex key to quickly measure ~5mm between the end of the axle and the face of the locknut - with the original axle or a same-length replacement, 95% of the time it'll be 5/6mm at the other side. (older, steel frames will need less than 5mm). With solid axles, I make an estimate of the protrusion on the fixed/drive side and then slip the axle into the dropouts, to see if the axle nuts fit on both sides without having to tweak the frame.

Hello Calvin! Is it me or I find the threads on Shimano axles quite easy to be striped. I always go to the safe side, maybe I use to much force to set the cones?
@parktool
@parktool 3 жыл бұрын
The threads on the cone likely never strip. There are far fewer threads at the locknut. A good toque for the locknut is about 12-14Nm.
@CristianSpitz

Which bearing is best????? Sealed bearings or ball bearings??
@parktool
@parktool 2 жыл бұрын
That is a good Tech Tuesday topic. Advantages to both. Both have ball bearings. The cartridge style ("sealed") has ball bearings trapped between races the turn. The term "sealed" is more marketing than engineer. Both cup and cone and cartridge can use rubber seals to keep out dirt and water.

1:55 if the dust cap is slightly loose on the new cone, you can bend the inner flange in a smidge with some needle-nose pliers, at three (3) places 120º apart. Not 2, not 4, but 3. This will keep it where you put it. Also, I'll start using Park Tool grease when you start putting it in recyclable, refillable or re-usable containers: there's actually a worldwide plastic pollution crisis going on right now, and a respected bike company shouldn't be contributing to it! Waste doesn't stay in the town dump: used & discarded plastic such as these tubes takes at least 400 years to break down, but then only into microplastics, which choke, infect and damage ecosystems theoceancleanup.com/
