Actually, "007 in New York" is somehow "referenced" in Quantum of Solace (the movie). The movie ending, with Bond facing Vespers "boyfriend" and telling the canadian agent that her boyfriend is a spy is the whole set-up of "007 in New York". Sure, it is not in New Yorek, there are no scrambled eggs ... but the "mission" is basicly the same. Agreed?

Interesting fact about 007 in New York: Over here in the States, Penguin Books (who have the American publishing rights to the Ian Fleming Bond novels) didn't include that story in the collection until 2002, and since Bond says a lot of negative opinions about New York City, the story came with a disclaimer that the story didn't reflect the views of the Bond film producers or the citizens of the UK as a whole, and that was due to the reissue that included 007 in New York was released a few months after the tragedy of the 9/11 attacks.

It's interesting that TLD has Bond being cynical about his job, and wishing M will fire him. In the film, this is retained, and I always found it odd how in Dalton's first, he almost straight away has this attitude. Saying to Saunders: "If he fires me, I'll thank him". It fits Dalton's Bond, but I always found it weird to have it so early in his appearance. I kept thinking what's caused this? It seemed very much a precursor to his attitude when M won't let him investigate Sanchez in Licence To Kill. In a deleted scene from TLD, M suggests Bond is suffering from Accidie, a real life condition, where one suffers frustration at their lot in life. Again, this seems quite sudden for a new portrayal Bond to be introduced as being this burnt out.

Octopussy: A bit of a The Spy Who Loved Me-esque experiment that didn't really tickled my fancy, but, hey, good gory ending! Property of a Lady: Forgettable. That's it. The Living Daylights: Just like in the movie, but with all kinds of details about what Bond thinks before injuring Kara. Such an interesting internal monologue.

this book review series has had me checking KZfaq for months just waiting for the next one... It’s helped with the news drought and now avoidance of spoilers for B25 for sure, but more importantly made me feel like I was reading Fleming again for the first time. Loved it. Its very interesting and Fleming is quite charming and self deprecating. Also, Goldeneye Fleming’s Jamaica i just read this summer and it was really interesting and entertaining

From what I remember reading from Ian Fleming's 'Thrilling Cities', which has '007 in New York', it had a forward for the story. Fleming wrote it as a half-hearted apology to New York readers after his unsavory comments of the city in 'Live and Let Die'. The story contains Fleming's highlights of his time visiting. But also how he still finds New York overrated. The other thing I found noteworthy was the plot about the female agent seems to be used for the final scenes in the movie 'Quantum of Solace'.

It's funny you say "The Property of a Lady" sounds soppy, because to me, that title implies something darker and more twisted. Like, say, a story where Bond has to live as a "kept man" (a la William Holden's character in Sunset Boulevard) for someone that he's pursuing, either as part of the mission, or while under duress. Or something in the mold of Eyes Wide Shut, with a sinister cult and living furniture.

The comic book of 'Octopussy' turned it into a more traditional Bond adventure, following Bond's investigation where he teams up with Oberhauser's daughter. A nice continuity nod is, because it was adapted after 'golden gun', Bond meets Mary Goodnight again in Jamaica. Interestingly, Octopussy the short story is Smythe's story-more or less what Calvin suggested for 'the spy who loved me',

Prepare to be surprised: "Property" was my favorite. Certainly in this collection. Compared with the other, it should probably be edged out by "Risico," but the simplicity of "Property's" plot makes it more memorable. A really charming piece and richly atmospheric. Good to see the USSR back as the antagonist, and the fact that they're not doing anything that's terribly evil, but must be stopped just the same, is certainly a nice touch. "Octopussy" was too long for a story with so little involvement by Bond. The backstory may have been high-stakes, but it was all taken care of offstage years ago. The darkly comedic death of the sad old man doesn't really justify such a long walk to get there. Bond's connection to this Oberhauser guy was interesting, but nothing ever came of it (why didn't Bond think of him in "Russia" when he was flying over the Alps and reminiscing about his misspent youth?) and it was way too late in the series to start giving Bond backstory, even if just for texture. "Daylights," yeah, that's a good one. "New York" was annoying in its meaninglessness, but I don't think I would have minded much at all if it occupied a less obtrusive place in the series chronology. It was never meant to be the grand finale, so we can't judge it too harshly for not measuring up, and in absolute terms there's nothing _wrong_ with it. Even its pointlessness is, while not excused, largely mitigated by its brevity. It just takes a few minutes to plow through, roll your eyes at the punchline, and then you could be on to the next thing--if only there were a next thing. It is indeed a shame to end the series on this note. When I read it I placed this before "Golden Gun," figuring I'd at least be able to end on a proper novel. As underwhelming as "Golden Gun" was, I still believe I made the right call. Looking forward to the ranking video! It's got me thinking about how I would rank them myself. I expect there will be a good deal of difference between us. Should be fun.

007 in New York actually wasn't in the original publication of Octopussy. It was featured in an anthology Fleming wrote called Thrilling Cities. It's about, you guessed it, thrilling cities. I don't remember it being particularly amazing, but it's definitely worth a read. So is Fleming's The Diamond Smugglers, a non-fiction work he did in the late 50's about some smugglers he knew.

I read all the Fleming’s Bond’s books when I was a kid in their French translation. This collection of novelettes may even have been the first Bond book I read (titled in French as "From Jamaica with love"). However, the book did not include "007 in New York". I found out about it 20 years and, as a completionist, I sought it out and it became the only piece of Fleming’s I read in English.

Congratulations on making it through the original Ian Flemming James Bond series! I was really excited when you started going through them, and it was nice to be able to comment on Diamonds Are Forever when our reading schedules synched up, even though it wasn't the best one. I figured you would get further along much faster than myself, given my own reading plan for Flemming, and the fact that I would be reading other books in between. And I knew I was going to have a deliberate pause in between FRWL and Dr. No. My thought was to put myself into the mentality of the author and readers experiencing FRWL, and read that book from the standpoint of it being one possible end to the series of James Bond novels. And given how Dr. No is the book that eventually was adapted into the first movie, I figured I would approach that as James Bond returning, but not quite the same in spirit. As if the movie version begins there, when he gets his Walther PPK. Anyway, I never read Colonel Sun, but I did read the first couple Gardner novels, Licence Renewed and For Special Services. I looked forward to your ranking of the Ian Flemming novels, and will be interested to see what you make of John Gardner's books. All the best!

Thanks very much Kristan, very much appreciate it! My original plan was to read books in-between too but curiosity really did get the better of me, particularly when it came to going into Dr No after FRWL. I just finished Colonel Sun recently and thought it was very good but... Just not Fleming. I'm not even sure what that means right now but whatever the Fleming ingredient in the formula is is going to be the Bond book x factor I think. Anyway, thanks for the comment again, hope you enjoy the rest of your read through!

My copy of this book is missing 007 in New York. It sounds like I'm not missing much. I find it interesting that in The Living Daylights that Bond is pondering how to fill a boring day. I'm calling it now, Bond 25's gonna be called '007 in New York'. I'm putting a tenner on it! I did try making the scrambled egg recipe - it was nice, but it wasn't anything spectacular. It was fun to try, but not worth the extra effort from your bog-standard way of making scrambled eggs. Then again, I'm more of a fried egg man myself. Also, there's a small grease stain in my copy of the book where I accidentally dropped some. Fun fact: When Bond muses about women playing the cello in 'The Living Daylights', he mentions "Amaryllis somebody" - that was Amaryllis Fleming, Ian's sister, who did indeed play the cello. I'm rather glad I got this when Penguin released both this and 'For Your Eyes Only' in one book as a big Bond short-story compilation (it was titled 'Quantum of Solace' and released in 2008 to tie-in with the film) because I don't think I would've paid full price for this collection by itself, especially if it was 1964 and all I was getting was just the title two. A short story collection should still be novel length - instead of one novel broken into chapters, it's many chapters that aren't related. But this isn't really to do with the stories' quality, more just a grumble at the price of books. 7:47 And come on now, the 'Pretty Woman' poster had them back-to-back, not looking into each other's eyes.

Actually I’ve read all the Bond books including Colonel Sun and Role of Honour and I never found them quite as exciting as the movies! Fleming was a great write for the 50s and early 60s but modes and fashions change! And Cubby Broccoli and since, his daughter and stepson continuing the tradition, has always insisted that Bond be in the NOW! James Bond, in the films evolves with the times whereas the books tend to remain stagnant! The books Bond is also more human and often questions his own actions contrary to the films! Although Timothy Dalton was very much closer to the book Bond than were the others! I guess Daniel Craig is very much like that too though I do think it was a mistake to shoot Casino Royal as a beginning story for it puts all the other Bonds out of sync which is a pity! Nevertheless, my fave of all is and always will by Sean Connery!

I highly doubt it, 007 in New York just does not have the same feeling as something like Goldfinger, or Thunderball does. Getting back to the topic at hand, I really enjoyed The Living Daylights short story the best out of the three(in the original print of Octopussy/ The Living Daylights it contained just the first three stories that Calvin talks about). It is very easy to picture Timothy Dalton as James Bond when reading it. Also I liked how at the beginning we read about Bond training with the rifle he is going to use during his assignment later. It's not often that we read about him practicing his skills.

@@evilubuntu9001 I think Anthony Horowitz 's Bond novels are very good. The Gardener ones were okay but not Fleming.

There will be a Fleming ranking and then yup! I'm going to read every official Bond novel. In fact, I just finished Colonel Sun on my commute this morning!

The Property Of A Lady would be a fantastic title for a Bondfilm. I did some music on the title. It´s about as good as I could make it back then, but I think it holds up pretty well for the most part. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/r5efi5mp2tHLYnmH.htmlhe Dalton did a fantastic job on playing Bond. He is probably the closest thing the series has gotten to Flemings original concept. The Living Daylights is probably the best story in this collection of short stories but you´re right - this collections isn´t as good as For Your Eyes Only and The Hildebrand Rarity sure was among the very best in that one. I think they really took the best parts of it and used it in Licence To Kill which is my opinion is still among the very best movies in the series.

If we ever get a female Jane Bond, The Property of a Lady would be perfect.
