Alot of the solid red ones are shorthorn as well. I actually explain and walk through the herd saying which cows are which breed. "Favorite cow calve, which breed are our cows" its 5 videos back.

A very high chance the heifer is sterile, called freemartin.

The answer to that is likely yes. There is a small chance that the heifer will be fertile, but it is a small chance. It is far more likely that the female will be infertile. (About a 90% chance that she will be infertile). If she is or is not is often visible or quickly able to be checked by a vet.

I would say no, close but not identical

First generation cattle. My grandpa farmed but my dad started his own farm and I don't believe they farmed together. So I would call that 2nd generation grain farmer

If one is a female and the other a male. The chances of the female being fertile is very slim. If they are both female, everything should be fine.

@@TwinElmFarms ok good information. first gen cattle for myself, expecting calves next month. i like it but not having heavy Equipment sure did challenge me this winter but we survived our first winter happy.

@@TwinElmFarms wow, that is surprising. Our dairy herd bovine doc gave me the impression that beefers seldom had twins, just as first calf heifers seldom have twins. Our high production 2nd or later cows often enough had twins. In the 70's or early 80's we had a set of triplets and again in the early 2000's a second set. In 70's and 80's we milked 112 registered Holsteins and in 2000's 750 grade cattle, mostly Holsteins. Twins were common in 2nd and later lactations. We were trained to check for another calf after every assisted delivery. Births are miraculous-even after seeing and assisting with many hundred, at the pig barn, on 2 dairy farms, dogs, goats, and hatching eggs of chickens and turkeys. New life is amazing to watch! Thanks for sharing and the reminders of the "good old days."
