I've said it before, but it bears repeating: the details you share with us while you work on or with your machines is so helpful! I've only been using machine tools for a short time, but your videos have helped me to get an idea of the tooling and accessories that I should get to further my abilities as I think about taking on more challenging projects. Watching you USE the tools makes it clear that I can do more challenging --- hence more rewarding! -- processes. Thanks so much!

i noticed the same thing but i assumed it was just because he didn't lock the spindle on the diving head during some passes. you can see at 20:20 the spindle is unlocked; he locked it again. then again at 21:41 its unlocked. in the previous video at 16:58 you can see the part wobbling as it is cut and the spindle is unlocked as well.

I think it was an optical illusion. If you look closely the following cuts at 10x speed do not show any movement! A better setup would be a dead stop in the dividing head to back up the work JIM 😮

Great video. The arbor this time was running much more true. So the cutter was making better contact. You could see the wobble in the arbor when he was cutting the 37 tooth gear. No wobble this time. I wonder if the overarm support could have been closer to the work if it would have taken more of the wobble out. You always have clearance issues to be mindful of.

Hi Keith, interesting sequences as usual. One question I have. You said that your piece of stock material was 4140. The end of what was way too long was painted yellow to show what it was. Since you were going to cut a piece off and presumably put it back in the bin why did you turn that painted end off instead of putting the painted end in the chuck thereby preserving that colour coding for your own information. I've noticed a lot, if not all, KZfaqrs seem to do this and I've always wondered why? Trust you've had a good Easter weekend from Canada's banana belt. 🤞🇨🇦🍌🥋🇺🇦🕊️🇺🇲👍

I’ve heard that the water soluble oil coolant can get very stinky over a short period of time. The reason some machinists don’t use it and prefer cutting oil.
@CothranMike
@CothranMike Жыл бұрын
Water soluble oil coolant can have a form of bacterial infection an anaerobic bacteria the kind that make stinky gases. Some of the newer sol-oil formulations contain an antimicrobial agent or an entire cast of antimicrobial characters some doing the non oxygen-breathing the anaerobic and some doing the aerobic bacteria. Ridding the surface of tramp oil in your sump makes for a better pump. This amorphism is still as true today as it ever has been. Check out the systems in use, in some cases a year. Unless you have an ongoing or chronic problem with stinky sump syndrome, it can sometimes be as easy as just tending to the tramp oils on a daily basis and aeration. There are good solutions for ridding your coolant system of bacterial infection. There are many material considerations involved and reactivity of various metals to various chemicals comes into play.
