Cameo Layout - Fiddle stick

In this video I share the approach I use for small cameo layouts by adding a self supporting 'fiddle stick' that allows a train to exit the scene. When not in use the parts are removable allowing a neater appearance in the home.
The layout is my latest cameo project, Wrecsam Canolog / Wrexham Central in N gauge, which is discussed on the blog here:

That's great - on compact shelf boxes like this it can work well. In ply the sag wouldn't be a problem, but MDF is what I had to hand and because it's so small not such a problem.

Super idea!! I think I might have to make something similar for my next project. Maybe a draw runner for support. I would love to see more detail on baseboard construction etc

It’s 6mm MDF cut with a jig saw. Lid and rear are 3mm hardboard salvaged from old drawers so pre-coated in white. Nothing rocket science but just neat - as it needs to be when displayed at home.

Good to see behind the scenes as it were. In interested to see how you installed the support for the fiddlestick. I was considering a section of brass angle that would slide into the groove on the shelf surface. I don't know how feasible that is until I nip down to my local IKEA and get hold of a couple of these shelves. Thanks for the video

If it works let us know, I stick with the MDF as I’d used it for the rest of the box but in anything larger than N the weight of a locomotive would bend it to easily.

The next step will be to paint the track and build paint and finish the platform. Once that’s in I can ballast and begin more extensive scenery work. If you’re familiar with Wrexham Central there won’t be too much to do, but I want to take my time on the canopy.

Why not add a raised end to the fiddle stick to act as a buffer, both when the track is present, and also when it's closed?

I have added a nice little handle to the end since filming the video that acts as both. A fixed end would also work, you're quite right! :)

Paxton Road’s fiddle stick is different as it’s a sector, to allow access to each track. I’ve been asked to do a video on that, so will do so in the next few weeks.
