In this video, I go over Tenba's new camera backpack - the Axis 24L. There were things I liked about this bag and things that I didn't like at all. I go over the bag, show you what it can and cannot do and explain why I didn't keep the bag.
Where to buy this bag:

Wow! Wow! Wow! I was so interested in this bag I have looked at every single review I could find on KZfaq and they never really got specific enough as to how this bag would work functionally seemed more like a paid advertisements. I found this review very thorough and informative and the best I’ve seen yet and I so appreciate finding it. It stopped me from making what would’ve been an obvious mistake in my purchase and I’m now gonna look for an alternative backpack. I’m looking forward to future reviews from you. Thank you.

Hi. Nice review. Just something I noticed regarding the straps for the tripod over the molly. I believe the straps do unclip. There are no click connectors, but like the Lowepro Protactic (that still has click connectors), I believe there is a clip that comes off. I believe one side can be unclipped and adjusted over the tripod and then re-attached before cinching it down. Great review...thanks.

I always thought that the point of an open back bag is so that thieves can't get at your expensive gear in crowded areas, without you knowing. I don't think that I would sit my camera bag down in the mud on the front or the back. If your straps are in the mud then so is your front! I do get your point, especially if there are better options but jeeez, you seem to be really hung up on that.
@tammymellert98
@tammymellert98 5 жыл бұрын
Not hung up on anything. The back open bags were designed so that your straps don't get all mucky and muddy when you are out and it just so happens the design also works well for security. Most of the bags first designed and sold with this feature were the hiking and adventure bags like f-Stop and others. I don't care if the front of my bag gets muddy or dirty, since I do it all the time, but I do care if my straps get muddy and then all over me. I usually come home muddy anyway but it nice to not have it all over me. My bag has been muddy and wet but my straps stay dry. Some people like that feature and others don't...its personal preference but most I know like not having muddy or wet straps to put back on.
@JohnDoukasPhotography

I’d also suppose if there’s a concern about mud getting on the straps, there’s also the option of not laying the flap all the way down. Could just hold it with one hand if you’re just grabbing something, or let it rest on an elbow while you’re configuring the gear. Or, rest the bag on a knee and avoid the ground altogether. What kind of tripod are you using? I have a twist-lock and I can’t see how it would be a struggle to get it on or off

Good thing I found this video as I too was looking for a replacement for my Protactic 450 mk I, thank you so much! I agree with every single point (tripod/straps) and I've returned backpacks for less. I'd add another issue with the way the straps are attached on this Tenba: The zipper is taking all the stress of the gear pulling down and if it fails the backpack becomes immediately unusable... Plus, if it happens on the move, your gear might become immediately unusable as well.

Hi, Tammy! Thanks for the review. I'm a bit late to the game here. I hear you on the placement of the straps, though my big worry is not so much on getting them dirty or muddy but on whether the bag is strong or secure enough when one is carrying it fully loaded, given that all that's holding everything in would be the (main?) zipper. Tenba bags look great, though.

Great review Tammy. Tenba looked great and was of very high quality. I came back to this review a few times after viewing the bag in a store. I went with the ThinkTank Urban Access 15, as it had dual side opening, which suits me more for my travel needs. Also the side opening of the Urban Access was large enough to easily pull out camera or lenses.

I've got the 32L version of this bag, brand new. It is extremely well built and quality materials. With a 17.3" gaming laptop there were are only 3 options; mindshift 40L, ruggard 75 and this tenba 32. I tried all 3 and this was the best. Do note that all 3 are actually about the same size externally/internally and is the largest allowed on plane overhead. I have my tripod centered but I can attach it on the side too using pair of f-stop anchor straps $15 or most anything else eg sleeping bag/tent. Shoulders are adjustable, back is airy and comfortable, and hips are secure. Well balanced. One of my quick access has camera, another drone and last my external monitor. I have extra pockets/pouches and storage attached to the molle in front/side inc sunglass hardcase. No bag is perfect for everyone and ymmv. I've got locks on the quick access zippers to prevent theft whilst traveling. Zippers appear to be strong and bad is water resistant. Had to mount the peak design capture clip lower than I would have liked cause of the wide straps but that width makes them comfortable so.... Stands upright too. Excellent bag and given same limitation ie 17.3" gaming laptop, is arguably the best bag on the market.

I managed to rearrange the dividers to cover the side access point so you can put other items there instead of a camera. Accessories go in the front pockets which I like as it’s quicker to get to than opening up the main compartment. Personally I didn’t have any issues with the front straps for the tripod and I much prefer having it centred rather than on the side, it that’s just me :) What I liked about the bag is that it’s deep enough for. Pro camera and will take a long lens S well, it seems quite large inside for its overall dimensions and will fit ok on a plane. I’ve lugged around 17kg and the zips seem strong enough to hold it fine and straps were comfortable but that just highlights the fact that everyone will find bags feel different on their back. No substitute for trying one first! Agree with the design though on having the straps laying on the ground, it’s irritating.

I don't have this, but want it. I have a larger Vanguard 53L but want a smaller 20l possibly.. With the straps, my bad has the straps not attached to the flap and I hate it. Sure, it won't get dirty, but it's just in the way all the time! I wish it was on the flap like this bag. Sucks how there's no velcro on the side opening, but it's not hard to just go to the dollar store and buy velcro and attach it. I also did the same for my bads inner flap and attached pouches. It too didn't have any pockets so I made some. And you can remove the buckle thing in the front door the tripod. Don't know why you'd want your tripod on the side either, it's not balanced that way. I've always had it straight at the back. Much better that way
@tammymellert98

Michael Frymus thanks for the reply. The straps on the front are very hard to work with the buckle opening the way it is with winter gloves on. Its not practical in any way for fast on and off with a tripod. Some of those buckles are also stiff and hard to open. I have those straps on a hiking bag and dont like them so I swapped them out. I carry two tripods since I am a vlogger and my smaller carbon tripod goes on the side of my bag. Some people prefer them on the side and balance it with a water bottle on the other. Its personal preference really. Its not a bad bag but I gave my honest review of it and those I have talked to that carry it have the same issues with it. Take care, I hope it works for you.

FYI, on bhphoto, the picture now has straps for securing tripod on the side. They might have a revised model now. If you like the backpack overall design and dislike the shoulder strap, maybe puting a foam seat belt pad around each shoulder strap might help. I am deciding between Tenba axis 20L vs Mindshift backlight 26L. Although the mindshift 26L sounds bigger, Tenba rated the bag using internal volume (19.7L), whereas the mindshift 26L internal volume is 19.1L. Thus they are comparable. I initial liked mindshift 26L a lot, but the shoulder strap is not adjustable which makes the bottom of the bag sits on the butt instead of pelvis (for correct load bearing) for shorter people (check hiking backpack website for how to measure your torso length, from 7th cervical vertebra to iliac crest). Also, the waist belt on mindshift is not removable.

Hi, they didn't update the bag with a strap. These are unfortunately prototype images that most retailers are still using. New images were sent out but retailers fail to update their websites. I have this confirmed this by Tenba themselves. Posting this as hopefully it stops others being disappointed like I was when it turned up.

@@tammymellert98 2 things you pointed out in your video. Laptop storage is in the back. While flying, this is not easily accessible without unzipping the back. 2, the back still unzips with the shoulder straps. These are part of the design of the V2.

I have so much trouble finding a backpack to fit me. Why are so many camera backpack straps so wide and stiff and uncomfortable! May be fine for a man with broad shoulders, but not us women. I think I'm resigned to ordering a Shimoda, though it's much larger than I require.
@tammymellert98
@tammymellert98 Жыл бұрын
I know exactly how you feel on this one. Shimoda makes great bag and their new Explore V2 25L might be a good one for you if you want a small yet comfortable bag. The straps that some with it are redesigned and are really comfortable for women (well at least me). It will fit a mirrorless kit nicely. I own the 30L and the 35L of that bag and love them but I tend to carry everything but the kitchen sink with me. Also, you can try two bag from Tenba that are great and I own them both. First one is the Tenba Shootout 16L DSLR backpack. It is perfect for either a mirrorless or DSLR system with plenty of room for other gear but is very comfortable. It is a small bag as well which makes it nice. I LOVE mine so much I have two of them LOL! The new one that just came out is the Tenba Axis V2 16L. I just got this bag so I haven't had too much time with it but it fits comfortably. I will be doing a review on that one as well. I hope that helps a bit!!

I'm wondering if the Atlas Athlete pack might serve well when you're not carrying much as well as for times when you carry more gear, jackets, snack, etc. I recently watched Mark Denney's review of the Atlas Athlete and he showed how the pack can be cinched down with the tension straps to make the bag smaller. My goals is to have one pack; as I mentioned in my comment to your last video, I'll be checking it out in mid December. Maybe it's dreaming the impossible dream; gotta have hope.

Ali_ReBORN Well my Atlas Athlete pack straps don’t touch the ground at all when the back is open and my MindShift Backlight 18L and 26L straps don’t either. Depending on how I open it, my LowePro Protactic 450 AW straps dont either and neither do the straps on my LowePro Flipside BP 450 AW. So yeah I can think of a couple right off the too of my head. This bag has straps that literally fall on the ground when the back is open and they get in everything. I am not the only one to return this bag for that reason and others.

Attaching the tripod on the side is the worst thing to do to your back and it's the most common design flaw in back-packs. Sure, if your are using the lightest tripod you can find you can get away with it most likely but put anything a bit more serious and you've thrown your back out of alignment, which is a no-no. So the ability to attach the tripod on the center should be considered a selling point here, not a flaw.
@tammymellert98
@tammymellert98 5 жыл бұрын
Miroslav Majstorovic for some that is true but for those of us who carry two tripods for vlogging putting two tripods on the front isnt possible. I prefer my tripods on the front in the middle. However the straps on this bag are not easy to work with and undoing them when they are locked onto the loops each tine is a pain. Not only that the tripod slides down the front and then pulls the bag backwards which also creates shoulder issues. If this bag works for others thats great but for what I do it didnt work for me and I gave an honest review.
@Mikri90
@Mikri90 5 жыл бұрын
@@tammymellert98 yeah, now it's a bit more clear why it doesn't work for you. For a double tripod setup, side mounting makes sense. I guess it's down to one's needs.

ok, so while you put your bag in the floor to open it, do you stand up or squat down to reach your belongings? Do you seriously leave the bag fully oppened right there on the floor?? Why wouldnt you open the bag against your knees/body to avoid the straps touching the mud everytime you want to reach for something? i mean, personally, i prefer not having to get the straps and belt out of the way everytime i want to unzip the bag, than just having to support the straps against my body in case there's any mud in the ground while i'm changing lenses or whatever i may be doing. Thats why the straps and belt go along with that back opening, because its way faster to open/close. Another thing: the same way your straps would touch the mud in case you were just leaving the bag fully opened on the floor, a backpad like the one on the lowepro also would. It just makes no sense to me what you are saying :/

btw, opening it like i say you should, is less prone to getting the straps (and especially the belt) mudded than setting them off to the side for being able to unzip the bag. And the laptop compartment is usefull for carrying big macro difusers, which i find pretty usefull, more than those little pockets that serve for filters only noobs use ;) My only negative thought about this bag is that the whole weight is held by the zipper, though maybe they counted on that and thats why it seems to be tough enough.
