Full frame Panasonic S5II vs Micro Four Thirds GH6. Bigger sensor with phase detect autofocus vs much smaller sensor but way better features and slow mo. 4k 60p cropped for full sensor 5.7k 60p and 4k 120p. HD 180fps vs 300fps. Leica 200mm f2.8 prime lens vs the full frame 70-200mm f4 pro lens. And in the studio the 20-60mm f3.5-5.6 vs the Leica 25mm f1.4. Who has the better color science? AF, stabilization, sharpness etc.

The Lumix S Series gives creators a competitive alternative to over-priced brands especially now that the company is finally tackling the auto-focus issue. This company listens to its customers and is in touch with reality. Imagine a camera with the best IBiS, best color science, and an up-and-coming phase-detect AF? That's a trifecta of a gem!

It seems that Panasonic has (for the first time) messed up their color science with the new S5ii sensor.
@DrWNoLs
@DrWNoLs Жыл бұрын
@@randomoneforstuff3696 100% this. I have the S1, S5, and S5ii. And the color on the S5ii is drastically different and its shocking how little people talk about it. I find that adjusting the tint in the white balance by 2-4 on red and 2-4 on blue helps get rid of the new greenish tint.
@randomoneforstuff3696
@randomoneforstuff3696 Жыл бұрын
@@DrWNoLs I've been looking at KZfaq reviewers' footage and wondering how almost none of them noticed it. I'm curious if the color shift only applies with V Log and Panasonic's Rec.709 conversion lut, or if it also affects the standard and natural picture profiles -- the ones I usually shoot with. (mainly on the original S5)
@DrWNoLs
@DrWNoLs Жыл бұрын
@@randomoneforstuff3696 I can tell you for certain that it impacts all of them, unfortunately. I was actually comparing that yesterday, and the tint is definitely there. It's still worth getting imo, because the white balance tint shift really does work quite well and gets standard and natural close. But you have to work around it and cant just mindlessly set it like the OG S5.
@randomoneforstuff3696
@randomoneforstuff3696 Жыл бұрын
@@DrWNoLs Thanks for the information. The tint actually reminds me a bit of my old Lumix ZS100. That point and shoot camera's color science has always had a weird green tint on skin tones. Also, do you have any idea how to remove sensor dust from a pocket (non-interchangeable lens) camera? There seems to be a really apparent dust spot when at 250mm and f8.

Manual focus becomes second nature the more you do it. Often, it's faster to focus manually than to adjust autofocus settings. Therefore, I have to say that GH6 remains the first choice until Panasonic ups the specs on their phase detect cameras. That might be a while for them to catch up.

nice comparison and great work! Thanks ! The gh6 looks interesting. My personality choice is the s5 mark 2 . If you need more frames in slowmo , just use optical flow and you get it up to 20 -30 % without loss of (much) quality. Also you have awesome low light performance in Full Frame and the nice autofocus on Board :) With other Words : the s5m2 Problems you can solve with small tricks . If you dont shot on low light and use manual focus , save the Money and take the gh6. Both are very great Cameras!

Kacey, you can actually get a nice slo-mo boost with optical flow in post on AE or Premiere. You can easily double the frame rate (or make it twice slower) without any glitches. I think you can turn 120 in 240 with great results. There is no good fix in post for a pulsing hunting focus or a low light tiny sensor stravaganza.

Panasonic S5II impressing again. As for your perfect camera (and possibly the perfect camera for those not needing high resolution), I'm thinking maybe an S1II or perhaps S1HII. 24 MP stacked sensor (same one in the A9II), ultra competitive price point of £3800/$3800. We know Panasonic won't skimp on video features and the stacked sensor should be able to support 4K120p and perhaps even 6K60P neither with crop. New PDAF but refined, low light AF refined, the GH6 ultra articulated screen and Pannyboy VLOG for those sweet sweet colours with the rec 709 LUT. A camera like that might be the new KZfaqrs choice and would probably be the best camera on offer at that price point........till Sony come out with an A9III with a 33 MP stacked sensor with like a 1/500s readout speed lol.

What nonsense. Just like exposure is always a compromise within the exposure triangle, camera features must always be a compromise between parameters. It means that different cameras can be perfect for different needs, and not good for others. For my needs the G9 is the perfect camera. It is the best camera I have ever used. But for your needs there will be a different camera that is ideal for your needs. The problem is too many people think that a single camera should do everything. That is impossible, and always will be impossible. The photographers who are happy with their cameras are the ones who understand their own vision and photographic needs. Those photographers are then able to find the camera that is perfect for them.

I defy any camera - Sony, Canon or Nikon - to focus in the middle of the branches, and keep it still, a bird or some other animal. At the moment the only flaw of the 5s II or IIx is the 6k (full sensor recording) at 30p. We'll probably have to wait for the S1 II or IIx which has a more powerful engine to get 6K at 60p and maybe even decent slow motion.

@@leow5632 I agree that Sony has the best autofocus technology, but would have a hard time tracking a bird through dense tree branches. Unless you photograph a koala in manual focus. This is the gist of my thinking: at the moment there is no camera that can do birdwhatching in the thick bush. Let alone Panasonic....The IA technology undertaken by Sony is the way forward in the future. Even I, in Rome, enjoy myself at night, with all the precautions and it's better to have a friend nearby, to do street photography with Panasonic and Fuji sometimes in manual focus to get around the obstacle of the dark but if you want to seize the moment fleeing .... it is better that I leave it alone.

The GH-6 lost your face three times during the intro. We have our answer. The R5's animal eye AF works all over the frame, including 4K/120. But that slo-mo is pixel binned and soft. The S5 II's AF is very sharp but restricted to the central area, so no ruling of thirds, doesn't work at HD/120, and 4K/60 is cropped. The GH-6 has great image quality but the AF hunts like Elmer Fudd. The A7S III has no video animal AF at all. The search for perfection continues. Please test the R6 II. It supposedly has upgraded AF along with HD/180.

I find it hard to believe they won't add Phase Detect to the next GH cameras at the very least. Kasey. (At 7:45 in the video). A crop factor of 1.22 is not a 22 % removal of length on the sensor (going from full size to cropped size). It is (1.0 - (1/1.22)) = 1.0 - 0.8197 = 0.18 = 18 % removal of length on the sensor. You have to know what is the bases for the percentage calculations.

@viktorpaulsen627
@viktorpaulsen627 Жыл бұрын
@@cameraconspiracies Thanks for the response, Kasey. Yes, that's what you said. I believe that the correct statement that you should have said instead was: "The image crops in 1.22x. In other words 18%". (Meaning that the crop factor (big divided by small) is 1.22, and when cropping it crops away 18% (linearly) from the big one). You may strongly disagree, but consider what is the basis for the percentage calculation. For sensor crop factors the base is always the smallest sensor. But for percentage calculations the base is the one that you start from. In this case the bigger sensor. As another example (or analogy), let's assume that you talked about a larger crop, from full frame to m4/3, which is approximately crop factor = 2. Then (potentially your) incorrect statement would have been: "The image crops in 2.0x. In other words 100%." To crop away 100% (remove everything) is clearly not correct. Do you see how I arrived at this? Let's try with crop factor 1.99 instead of 2, then it's easier: "The image crops in 1.99x. In other words 99%." Cropping away 99% is quite drastic for m4/3. It's a loser format but not to such degree. (Sorry for trying 'loser' humor; you do it so much better!) The fact (which we all know, of course) is that a crop factor of 2 removes (crops away) 50% of the length of the bigger sensor, not 100% when going from the bigger to the smaller. The math is: (1.0 - (1/2.0)) = 1.0 - 0.5 = 0.5 = 50%. However, I know that Camera conspiracies is a comedy / humor channel (a very good one), and nobody expects mathematical accuracy. This video reveals what I have been seeing. The GH6 is still an overall better filmmaker camera than the S5 II. The GH6 compliments my S1H very well (now that I am better at getting the colors to match). I commend Panasonic's efforts with the S5 II and I am very hopeful it will bring in more users to the ecosystem, but the S5 II nor S5 II X are a replacement for my S1H. Panasonic, if you are reading this (and I assume you are), please just give us 4K 120, VND, SSD Recording and a bigger battery...plus eliminate those damn crops.
@sliceofmymind
@sliceofmymind Жыл бұрын
@Big Cook The S1H has timecode, better hi-res multi-angle screen, more RAW options, larger battery, tally lights, more buttons. I can keep going. The S1H was developed for actual video/film making. The S5IIX is going to be good but very few S1H filmmakers are going to give up on the S1H for just PD-AF.

With v log, the S5 colours can be almost anything you want, and the S5 has better dynamic range, leading to smoother highlight roll off, more detail in shadows and highlights. GH6 is great, but S5 is really juicy.

My two cents as a longtime LUMIX user. I like the gh6 a lot but that thing struggles over 1600 ISO. The low light plus the PDAF on the S5ii allows me to not care about 4k120 as much. GH6 has everything and more on the S5ii except FF, PDAF and low light. They match up nice!

I’m generally with you wrt lenses being high priority. But I don’t generally rush out and buy the latest and greatest upon release. In this case, I’d wait a year and see what the lens situation is like for the S5 II. The improved autofocus is very compelling (almost a game changer) but I’m not going to assume the lenses I want/need will be there. ATM, I’m uncommitted to any system. Last year I financed a new Mac purchase with my credit card-right before interest rates went up 😢. (Variable rate cards suck when rates go up.) It’s going to be a while before that debt is paid down and I can even think about buying a new system.

Those two T-shirts look remarkably different shades of green despite being two recent cameras from the same company. They are both pleasant greens, but clearly different. The orange shirt he sometimes wears also looks different depending on camera brand. I wish he would tell us which colour shirt is more correct to real life after he reviewed his footage, that would be helpful.

the lackluster autofocus on the gh6 kinda sucked considering i came from a canon dual pixel camera... but it still works well enough and the most important part is that its there if i need it. what sold me most though is that i already own a lot of crop sensor glass from that previous canon cam, and the gh6 was cheaper. throw a good speedbooster on it and its really no different from a full frame camera as far as im concerned

This summer I bought a G9 as it was $1000. off of the mslp. I like the camera, but I also realize that Panasonic is coming out with a replacement otherwise they wouldn't have offered such a discount. If it has phase detect af then my G9 will be a beater and will be my second string camera and I am ok with that.

@@shootthechit we find the G9 autofocus to be fine as long as light is decent. In video talking head stuff never/rarely have an issue on CAF. Too much contrast or low light it struggles, but many crop sensors will too. Check out Marlene Hielema’s channel on using a g9.
@gordon3988

@@shootthechit good point and not its strength for sure, though it can work ok in most circumstances. Marlene’s videos largely just show how well with experience. I noted a few videos out there on how to make Sony autofocus work well too. Our Sony’s AF is darn close to perfect, but it’s IBIS is OK at best, works though you just can’t push it. Likely could say the same for G9 AF in video; you can’t push it. I don’t think it works well if much movement, maybe a bit better than a GH5. Marlene seems to make it work though for skateboarding too, but small clips. If you are a photographer pretty much perfect. For solo video, my preference would be definitely (!) be Sony or Canon, though you can get by. That said, maybe a new Panny now with Phase detect and contrast!
