Great review, Gordon. The Sigma lenses are a great addition to the EF-M system, but that Canon 32mm f/1.4 is soooo much sharper than the Sigma 30mm f/1.4, especially wide open. It's pretty useless for vlogging though with that slow AF. Great options available now for the system.

About the weather sealing, the Canon EF-M mount doesn’t have it, it’s written all over Sigma’s website, a shame considering this is going at the exact same price as the other mounts. But nonetheless, I got myself a 16mm by the start of this year and been loving it ever since. AF is just like native, build is superb, this really is a dream come true for the EOS M ecosystem Also just finished this video and I should say, this is THE video to go when you want to know what lens to buy for your EOS M camera! Gordon, I’ve owned several Sigma lenses for EOS mount bodies over the years, with the 105mm F1.4 and 50mm F1.4 being the most recent. The thing that turns me off them is the way I find Sigma lenses render colours compared to my EF lenses. I find the Sigma’s quite cold and EF lenses warmer. Did you notice anything like this comparing the 32mm and 30mm lenses?

I've had the 56mm since launch day on the Canon EF-M mount and it has been a truly fantastic lens to work with...as long as you remember to turn on distortion correction for you RAW files or have it enabled in camera for JPEGs....the distortion on the lens is rather odd. I also bought the 16mm lens later in the year and I love it as well...but the Canon 32mm is a photography lens and it thrives in that role. Aside from the autofocus speed and smoothness, the Sigma 30mm is, in my opinion, a vastly inferior lens. The Canon 32mm is an unbelievable photo lens but struggles with video - that should be your deciding factor.

Your timing is perfect. I had been pulling my hair out trying to decide on a new camera. Each potential candidate had a huge downside of some sort. For Canon, I was ready to pass on the M6 ii specifically because of the complete lack of lenses available (native or third party). The very few lenses that are available are slow, cheap feeling, etc. As soon as I saw the three Sigma lenses become available, I immediately purchased the M6 ii and the Sigma 16mm f1.4... WOW! The quality is absolutely mind blowing. Instant focus, beautiful blurry backgrounds, wide enough for vlogging, street photography, etc. Close enough focus that I can literally get as close as I want to ANYTHING and it locks on. I'm about to order the 56mm next.

I bought into the Canon EOS M system around six years ago, and have been very happy it. Canon was the obvious choice for someone with a handful of EF-S lenses, given that there was a free adaptor in the kit I bought. I started with the original body, but upgraded to an M6 mk1 a couple of years ago. Although I have recently moved to full frame with an EOS RP, I keep the EOS M system for air travel because of its compact size and lightness. The EOS M is widely used by vloggers, a testament to the light weight, excellent video performance, and of course Canon's wonderful colour science.

The Canon-official EF/EFS to EFM adapter costs around $120, but third-party adapters are as low as about $25. I'm using the Meike adapter and as far as I can tell it's functionally identical to Canon's adapter. The other thing to consider, the EF/EFS lenses are _mechanically_ adapted to EFM, but the _protocols_ that interface the lens to the camera are native. The native-mount EFM lenses don't have switches on them, they're controlled through menus, but when the EFS lenses are adapted, the menu settings for things like AF and IS are disabled, at least on my M100, and the camera seems to acknowledge the lens EXIF information and write it to the photo properly. I couldn't tell you if the EFM and EF/EFS use the same protocols, or if the cameras are programmed with both EFM and EF/EFS protocols in order to work with both lens families, but the nature of "adapting" the EF/EFS lenses to EFM is not akin to something like adapting Canon glass to Sony. Canon's mirrorless cameras control the lenses without requiring active electronics in between to translate.

Nice video as usual. You put a ton of information in there. That 56mm is especially looking interesting as a longer native mount option. Here in the USA they are still holding onto a premium over the e-mount and m4/3rds versions, but I guess that makes sense considering the lack of options and the lenses still being somewhat new in EF-M. It sounds like you might know a thing or two about upcoming Canon equipment, lol.

Another excellent review and as the owner of several M series bodies, it does open up some interesting possibilities apart from the 'native M' lenses I already own and the 'vintage' FD glass I often use because the camera's manual focusing aides are very good. Although it is possible to mount my EF glass via the adapter, apart from my 70-200 f4 zoom which is a neat combination under certain circumstances, the majority of EF glass is really unusable on such tiny bodies especially if they have 77mm filter threads. For stills I far prefer my DSLRs but for video, mirrorless is obviously far superior so for me, the M series fits the bill. As to the future of the M series, it's hard to predict, as you say right now their (Canon's) main focus is the R bodies and lenses so perhaps they are short on engineering/development resources but I find it odd that they haven't put out a M5/M50 MkII or given that 32 mpx sensor, to a proper 7D MkIII both of which should be relatively easy things to do. Although they seem to be about to launch some 'budget' RF lenses, overall the R series will never be a bargin basement product and there is mileage at the lower end where Canon have always had a presence so, they might have to backtrack a bit once they feel they have a viable R range bodies and glass.

This superior review was enough for me to reconsider the EF-M (M6 Mk II) system again since I had dismissed it because its glass was not Fuji XF quality. While waiting for the(new) FF EOS R [RS, R5, etc] , to be released prior to CP+ and CES 2020, these options represent great TRAVEL lenses for a light- weight M-system that would compete (for many photographer's interested in a small form-factor), with other light-weight systems for trekking . And, there are always EF/RF adapters when a FF system w/ lenses becomes primary. Gordon, you are more insightful than you're ever given credit.

Samyang make 20 lenses with EOS-M mounts from 8mm up to 300mm. The only possible downside is they are all manual focus, so not ideal for fast moving subjects, or slow moving for that matter. But for landscapes, still life, studio portraits and architecture (they even do a tilt-shift lens) their range is hard to beat, and the build and optical quality for the price makes them an attractive option.

It is true that Canon is not investing much in Ef-M, but it does not have to die. Canon can keep making new bodies and let the third party makers make lenses. They need each other in order to avoid being taken over by smartphones. Canon obviously is committing their resources to RF lenses and the R bodies but the APSC cameras are still a nice family / travel option. It is market segmentation. The M line up is never meant to be professional grade. What Canon needs to do is periodically update the bodies and making it affordable. Some of the tech will be passed down from the R line up. Anyway, if Canon start to make a lot more bodies like the RP then I would be more worried, but that camera is meant for individuals who already have EF lenses than RF lenses.

Why does it matter? You are going to spend under $1k for the camera and lens, big deal. Canon's RF lenses alone cost twice that. Once your EF-M dies in 5-6 years and if the system is no longer around, move on to something else. Not like you are spending tens of thousands on a system.

Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 is a phenomenal lens but I wonder why sigma hasn't bothered to adapt it to Sony e-mount or Canon EF-M mount yet. For Sony e-mount users the a-mount version of the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 can be used with the Sony LA-EA3 or LA-EA4 adapter. The Sigma 50-100mm f/1.8 doesn't exist with a-mount. Also the Canon EF-M mount cameras like the Canon EF-S mount cameras have smaller APS-C sensors with 1.6X crop factor instead of the common 1.5X. So the sigma 16mm f/1.4 is 25.6mm (35mm equivalent) instead of 24mm (35mm equivalent.

I wasn't aware of the fact that there could be current camera systems out there having just 8 (now 11) native lenses and not even having sensor based IBIS. I can not say anything regarding the 16mm and the 30mm, there are to many good alternatives for those in the MFT world, but the 56mm is a phantastic lens.

This is kind of off topic, but I’m interested. Why are the EF-M lenses have such weird focal lengths compared to most traditional ones such as 50mm lens for the most other lens system. It is just weird to see 56mm instead of 50mm.

Hey Gordon, awesome video! I currently have an M50 and I am considering purchasing either the Sigma 16mm or the Canon EF 16-35mm f2.8 or f4 for vlogging/photography for when I go to Japan. I currently have a canon ef 50mm and canon ef-s 10-18mm. Which would you recommend for me to purchase? Also, thanks for all the helpful vids! :D

Hey Gordon--Any initial impressions on how photos look from the sigma lenses on the Canon body vs how they look on Sony?? (Ofc the camera bodies will result in dif images, but Im wondering, for beginners who want to get an apsc camera with the sigma trio.. if photos from one look better than the other?) Thank you!

Would like to see you compare the 16mm and 30mm against the 18-35mm? Where the latter is somewhat like an alternative to them, having a slightly slower aperture.

Gordon Laing looking forward to that. I am considering between having one lens of a slightly slower aperture but more convenient without the need to change lenses, being the 18-35. Or getting the two new primes with a faster 1.4 aperture. A sharpness comparison as well as how much really is a 1.4 vs a 1.8 in terms of low light performance. Not sure how you would show the latter.

Thanks for the great review. I have been looking for a prime lens for my M50 and Sigma looks like a great deal. I wonder if Tamron will also come out with M compatible lenses. Tamron does have a 18-200 zoom lens but a 50mm difference from the Canon 18-150 isn't that significant. I have all the M zoom lenses but I need a larger aperture prime lens and seem like Sigma has come through.

@@khuo0219 you are right it's a bit redundant. I have a gear problem 😀 I suffer from G.A.S for sure. Sony is a great system but that 18-150 Canon lens is very light and compact compared to my Sony 18-105. I'm trying to go lighter on my kit.
