Total Recall (1990)
Total Recall is a 1990 American science-fiction action film directed by Paul Verhoeven, with a screenplay by Ronald Shusett, Dan O'Bannon, and Gary Goldman. The film stars Arnold Schwarzenegger, Rachel Ticotin, Sharon Stone, Ronny Cox, and Michael Ironside. Based on the 1966 short story "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale" by Philip K. Dick, Total Recall tells the story of Douglas Quaid (Schwarzenegger), a construction worker who receives an implanted memory of a fantastical adventure on Mars. He subsequently finds his adventure occurring in reality as agents of a shadow organization try to prevent him from recovering memories of his past as a Martian secret agent aiming to stop the tyrannical regime of Martian dictator Vilos Cohaagen (Cox).

One of the best Sci-fi Action movies ever made! Before Paul Verhoeven directed the film, David Cronenberg, Director of Body Horror films like Scanners The Fly and Videodrome was hired in 1984 by Dino De Laurentiis to direct the project for a 1985 release date. Cronenberg originally wanted the film to be a psychological thriller rather than a Sci Fi Action Adventure film, but the screenwriters, Dan O'Bannon, Ronald Shusett and Gary Goldman, objected this idea as Shusett wanted to do "RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK GOES TO MARS." Tensions got so nasty between Cronenberg and De Laurentiis, Cronenberg left the project and Laurentiis sold the script to Carolco the same company that made RAMBO, TERMINATOR 2, CLIFFHANGER and Cutthroat Island. The film won for Best Visual Effects at the 1991 Academy Awards as it was the only Sci Fi/Fantasy movie to be nominated.

"Doug, honey... you wouldn't hurt me, would you, sweetheart? Sweetheart, be reasonable. After all, we're married!" [BANG!] "Consider that a divorce!" I think the entire movie happened. There's a couple of scenes that occur where Quaid is nowhere in sight, how does he know they took place? Fun Fact: Coca-Cola is the only advertised soft drink on Earth; on Mars, we see ads only for Pepsi. Practical Over CGI Fact: This was one of the last major Hollywood blockbusters to make large-scale use of miniature effects as opposed to CGI. It was also one of the first major Hollywood blockbusters to use CGI (mainly for the scenes involving the X-ray scanner) and have it look good. Hot Stone Fact: Arnold Schwarzenegger was so impressed by how much dedication Sharon Stone had in training for her character role and was later inducted into the Stunt Woman Association as an honorary member. So proud of her physique, Sharon Stone posed nude for 'Playboy' magazine, showing off the buff body she developed in preparation for the movie. Sharon had pumped iron and learned Tae Kwon Do. Nice Quaid Fact: Arnold Schwarzenegger noticed that Michael Ironside was constantly on the phone between takes. When he broached the subject with Ironside, he was told that he was phoning his sister and that she was currently suffering from cancer. Arnold immediately brought Michael to his trailer and they had an hour-long, three-way conversation with Ironside's sister about what exercises she should do and what kinds of foods she should be eating. Ironside has never forgotten Schwarzenegger's kindness and neither has his sister.

The first CGI in a feature film appeared in the opening credits of Hitchcock Vertigo in 1958... it was a mechanical computer, but a computer nonetheless. Between that and Total Recall, a lot of other movies used CGI - among them Westworld, Star Wars, Tron, and The Last Starfighter.

Saw this in the cinema and after 30 years of debating with friends, I am 100% convinced it's a dream and he is lobotomized in the end (the fade to white instead of the typical fade to black). There are a ton of clues throughout the film that hint this is a dream. I'll give 2 - 1) How did Cohangen know where he was staying to send the Dr. to his room? and 2) The Dr. says if he kills him "...the walls of reality will come crashing down..." As soon as Doug kills him, LITERALLY the walls of the room explode. There are loads more. Have fun on re-watches 🙂

This is my favorite movie out of all of Arnolds works, as the story was just amazing, and gave off Alfred Hitchcock meets science fiction vibes. It probably wasn't his best movie, as True Lies and Predator I feel are more well made and consistent in regards to overall quality. But this was just a fun ride and I love the ins and outs of not knowing what's real and what's not throughout.

You can hold either view because you can argue stuff like the girl appearing on the screen, how would they know her that she would show up on the screen at Rekall and then at the end Quaid is afraid it's all a dream and when they are kissing a white light appears. Back in the early '90s my roommate and I argued about it, whether it was real or a dream. I read somewhere that the director said Quaid was actually still strapped to the chair and the light at the end was him dying... who knows. If there's an official interview and he says what he thinks, that's what the real ending must be.

You think this was a wild ride in 2024? Imagine seeing this in the theater as a 13 year old boy in 1990! It might be a reason Gen-X doesn't trust anything. 38:22 "it's not a dream? Yay, I'm glad!" Well... Yes, this is the kind of movie that we could argue all day about whether it's a dream or not. That said, there are many hints throughout that it was a dream the whole time - the exact dream he paid for. Here's just 3: 1. Quaid had a large metal object in his forehead and walks through a metal detector every day that sees his bones but not this metal object. 2. Quaid pulls that object out of his nose with no damage. 3. In the Total Recall office, Quaid describes a woman and it is EXACTLY Melina (7:04). How did they have her in their databank when she's a secret agent on another planet? And many others. Edit: I wrote that before you came back and replayed the Total Recall conversations. You still cut away before he selects Melina, which I think might be the biggest clue that it's a dream.

When I first watched this I asked myself “would he be hearing the dialogue and seeing the actions of other people in the movie as we see it if he was dreaming and if so would that not tip him off that what he is experiencing is a dream, or is the audience supposed to accept that Quade only sees what he sees whether he’s dreaming or not?”

To counter the ‘it’s all a dream/fake memory’ idea - he was already dreaming of the Mars girl BEFORE he went to Recall and the director made sure to have the camera stay on Sharon Stone after Arnie left the apartment and give a suspiciously sinister look - so I think the writers/directors wanted to leave you with something to think about. You can decide which way you want it - you can make an argument either way.

However, if he has memories of events he did not witness, it would be more than obvious to him that it cannot be real. In the same way, you are aware that your dreams were dreams. As far as we know, Quaid is also completely unaware of what Cohaagen and Richter are discussing in his office, for example. These scenes are exclusively for the viewer and only make sense if the events are real.

'They like to do that in movies'. Which is why it has become such tired, stale device. Very few movies have done this well, but now it's not even a plot device. It's a vanity for directors who want to think they're so clever when they're just lame. An example of how lame it can be is Ridley Scott spliced in a few seconds from Legends into Blade Runner because he thought it made him an artiste when all he did was just peepeed all over Ford's and Hauer's acting and their statement on slavery. Shutter Island uses this to illustrate how guilt makes us delude ourselves. First, that isn't what decompression does to a human. Second, movies and television have magic healing where all the scars, lumps, lesions, and bruises are healed at the end instead of the months of hospitalization and rehabilitation that happen in reality.

@@havok6280 Well IMO, 1970 to 2000 is the second golden age of cinema. The 1990s is just the peak. Most of the 90s movies are almost too iconic for their own good. People can easily take them all for granted

@@LukeLovesRose as havok mentioned you could do this for any decade...for example if i were compilling similar lists from the latter half of the 20th century, the 60s. 70s and 80s would all come out much higher than the 90s.(A large number of the films you listed i would rank as mediocre). What you're really saying is the 90s has a lot of your favourite films...thats cool, but don't mistake that for some consensus about the 90s being some great cinematic peak.

37:10 "Your eyes are coming out of their sockets; there should be some damage from that." Maybe. But humans have had their eyes knocked completely out. Still attached to the optic nerve but hanging down on their cheek, and surgeons have reinserted it and the person can see again. So these two might be OK. Might suffer some temporary vision loss and possibly some small permanent vision loss. But not Arnold. He's too badass for that.

You've seen Starship Troopers and Total Recall, it really seems that Robocop has to be on this list. But that's because of Verhoeven, not Arnie. Admittedly it's the least of the three imo, but it wraps up the quintessential thematic trilogy.

Is what is happening to Quaid just a fantasy taking place in his head while he is strapped in a chair at Rekall? I was long resistant to the idea myself. But over the years, I've become persuaded that this is almost certainly the case. Even so, the film is sufficiently ambiguous that people can argue back-and-forth about it and never resolve the question absolutely.

If it was all a memory in his head we’d have not seen anything outside of his POV. Nothing else but his fake direct experience would exist. Also, if it was a memory implant that anyone could be given, why have the twists and fake-outs about what’s real and what’s not? It wouldn’t go that far, or in that direction.

If you haven't seen it yet, check out Minority Report (2002) with Tom Cruise. It's based on a short story by Philip K. Dick, the same guy who wrote the short story that Total Recall is based on. Minority Report plays with some of the same themes as Total Recall, specifically themes of identity and the nature of reality and truth. Another film with some similar ideas is Dark City (1998) with Kiefer Sutherland and Jennifer Connelly.
