The sword in the crypt is an Ancient Atlantean sword once wielded by a powerful king entombed within. The skeleton almost nods in approval once Conan brandishes his sword. It's a true masterpiece of a film in the fantasy genre and still holds its own even today.

The director originally wanted pop music for the soundtrack. Luckily, he changed his mind. The sword master was actually the sword master for the actors, and he got a small part. The "camo" makeup at the end was worn by a female pit fighter, but the scene was cut. You can see her legs during the pit fights. The man who releases Conan was the same boy who chained him to the wheel. He had owned Conan for years.

4:20, I like that over the course of the movie that Conan actually discovers he can trust people more than steel. When he was hanging on the Tree of Woe, his best buddy and his girl came to rescue him. They could have went their own way and left him. Instead Subotai repays Conan for setting him free and Valeria shows that she truly loves him. In his fight with the last of Thulsa Doom's main henchman, he is moments from death only to be saved by Valeria at the last second. She kept her promise to fight by his side always in this life or the next. Once he gets to his feet, Conan shatters his father's sword which he was told he could always trust.

it wasn't just a king's sword .. it was an atlantean refugee-king's sword the sword was forged in atlantis with superior technology. 1000's of years before conan's time . when atlantis sunk beneath the atlantic ocean many surviors made it to the main land , some became noamdic others set themselves up as kings using their superior weapontry they manged to birng with them , this king was such a king. Also, the cimmerican's themselves are descendants of atlantis they were the ones that turned to a nomadic lifestyle . which made this fact far more significant than the movie "told you". also conan is not the last cimmerican being nomadic they were also very tribal there are many tribes of cimmerians out there.

To understand this film you have to know the world of Robert E. Howard. The thoughts he had were heavily concerned with the rise and fall of advanced civilizations. His father was a doctor and was very educated although he mostly cared for various people who lived and worked in the oil fields in Cross Plains, Texas. REH spent a lot of time at home caring for his mother and reading a lot about peoples and different races. REH lived from 1906 to 1936 but had accumulated a lot of wisdom in his short life. He had imagined an entire world that couldn't really be made into a film. Quotes from REH show how intelligent and forward-looking he was. That was all before The Lord of the Rings. There is a good film about REH "The Whole Wide World‎" from 1996 that you have to watch. cu 🙂

The Whole Wide World was a passion project for Vincent D’Onofrio, who played Bob Howard. Newcomer Renée Zellweger costarred and that landed her the role in her breakout film, Jerry Maguire (1996), opposite Tom Cruise. It was based on the book, One Who Walked Alone: Robert E. Howard, The Final Years. It’s also worth mentioning that REH was also friends with H.P. Lovecraft, who created the Cthulhu mythos. Both were published in Weird Tales, the fantasy and horror pulp magazine that was started in the 1920s.

The sword made in the beginning of the movie is often called "The Father's Sword." Rexor, the older, mustachioed henchman, appreciated the workmanship when Thulsa Doom's army raided Conan's village, and still possessed it 20 years later. When the adult Conan fell into that tomb, he found a sword that was apparently made for a former king or emperor. It's often called " The Atlantean Sword" and would probably have been made with better techniques and better metals, which is why it breaks the Father's Sword in combat with Rexor. However, Conan recognized his father's work and chose to take his broken family sword for the final showdown with Thulsa Doom.

Dungeons and Dragons is "High Fantasy" The Hyborean age of Conan is "Low Fantasy", with magic almost unheard of and practiced by few. Blood and Steel are the order of the day.
@NefariousKoel
@NefariousKoel 21 күн бұрын
Of note: Magic in Sword & Sorcery (low fantasy) is often dangerous and corrupting. Most of those who practice it are closer to demonologists than the do-gooder pointy hatted wizards of High Fantasy. I like S&S for just that kind of dark fantasy take ; the world is universally brutal and bleak with all manner of terrible things to be survived.

@SleepingGiant77
@SleepingGiant77 19 күн бұрын
@@johannesbowers7467 first of all, you said that "Dungeons & Dragons is high fantasy". Even with the more commonly played of the settings that you mentioned, this isn't really true. Greyhawk(for instance) is, aside from elves and dwarves mingling with humans, no more fantastical in the experience of the average citizen then Hyboria. And Hyboria isn't even that low magic of a setting. Conan's always running into sorcerers, demons, ancient horrors, frog gods, giants, all manner of fantastical creatures, curses, the undead, etc. Spider-haunted Zamora and the distant land of Hyperborea ruled by giants are just as fantastic as anything in the Flanaess. Several of the other settings that you mentioned don't really have much more in the way of Fantastical elements than Conan does. Mystara gets wacky outside of Karameikos, depends on where you are. It could either be high fantasy or mid to low fantasy. Kara Tur and Maztica are no crazier than Hyboria, especially as they're merely fantasy versions of the same real world cultures that Howard cribbed from to make his more exotic locales. Blackmoor isnt really a setting that anybody played unless they were making up their own version. The only published material on it doesn't actually have any setting info. It doesn't really seem to be all that fantastical. Rather like Greyhawk. Melnibone- slightly higher fantasy than Conan in that it centers around a kingdom of what are basically elves and occasionally a demiGod shows up. That's not really crazy by Conan standards, especially as there's not a lot of spell casting going on. Also, there's no real published material on this setting unless you count Deities and Demigods. Ravenloft has numerous sub realms, many of which are low magic. It's kind of hard to have horror when everybody has superpowers. Birthright- you didn't mention this one but it's a great example of what I was talking about. Not that popular of a setting, but it shows that your standard D&D setting isn't really that high magic. Dark Sun is a Conan like setting with more fantastical creatures. It's definitely a step up. Not that far off though. Dragonlance- before the dragons returned to Krynn? I'd almost argue that it was higher fantasy but lower magic than Hyboria. And I'm not too sure about that. Forgotten Realms, Eberron, Planescape- definitely High Fantasy. At least Forgotten Realms is high magic. Although this one has changed a lot over the editions.

In this movie, James Earl Jones has power that is obvious, and then abilities that are a lot more subtle. At the beginning when he stared down Conan's mother, and attempted to do the same at the end of the film with Conan, he was using a mesmerizing technique similar to how a serpent stares down its prey. In the world of Conan, Set is is a serpent god, whose followers get stronger by spreading his dogma of poison (in this film's case it was more of a societal poison), excess, and greed. Conan is one of the earliest inspirations for dungeons and dragons. The original conan stories were written by a guy that looked like a 1920's gangster. Arnold does some dramatic roles later in his career when he retires from politics and he showed a surprising bit of talent for the more serious tones. For more of his cheesey entertainment though, watch Jingle All The Way.

It's worth mentioning that Thulsa Doom was at the very least a powerful sorcerer, and was thinking he could hypnotize Conan to gain an advantage in the same way he did Conan's mother at the beginning of the film before he beheaded her once she let her guard down. Thankfully, Conan snapped out of it. Conan also broke his father's sword in the battle with Doom's top guy near the end, then used that same sword - which was used to behead his mother - to behead Doom himself if I'm not mistaken.

On the hill, The Wizard says the hills are consecrated by the spirits, and that is why nothing burns there. His shock was because the spirits allowed it to accept their payment, Valeria's death, and to let Conan honor a woman who fought demons to bring him back from the dead. Valeria comes back as a Valkrie, one of the female warriors that serve his god Crom. The Movie is framed around "The Riddle of Steel", and Conan's Journey to learning it on his path of revenge. The Ending: When Thulsa Doom tried to bewitch him right before Conan beheaded him, I do not believe Conan was falling for it. I think Conan remembered what Valeria said, that if she died, and he were facing 100 men, not even the gods themselves could keep her from coming to fight by his side, and she came back as a valkyrie, a warrior spirit that serves Valhalla and Crom. Her body, and his died. His father's sword, was shattered and failed its wielder twice. The only thing that survived the crucible of life was the determination of her soul, and his determination to avenge his people. Than answer to the Riddle of steel is the strength and determination of the human spirit.

It was directed very much like Conan was depicted in 70’s and 80’s and Heavy Metal comics imo. I used to have a few Conan’s as a kid and believe me, they didn’t hold back with the blood splatter and carving his enemies up like a turkey. Conan wasn’t a traditional hero. He did have a sense of right and wrong but it never interfered with him going after what he wanted.

Loved your reaction! Conan the Barbarian is my favorite film, it's actually very deep. The Director John Millius wanted to do a trilogy showing Conan's growth into wisdom, but they dropped the ball and Conan the Destroyer is an inferior film. In this film Conan is actually innocent and naive. The villain Thulsa Doom is a deceiver, he turns people against their fathers, in fact the Mountain of Power is like a fake hippy paradise (Millius is critical of 60s counterculture). Doom promises paradise, but his cult actually consumes it's followers (think drugs, etc). Conan learns that willpower (and the friends that saved him) are what gives him real power (the Rule of Steel), that is why, after meditating, he destroys the cult, liberating the princess and everybody. He breaks the illusion and gives them freedom and also self responsibility, as they don't have Doom as a false father figure anymore. Millius wanted to keep exploring this, but the producer Dino de Laurentis wanted popcorn films. If you like Arnold watch his debut, the film that got him this role: Pumping Iron. It's a documentary on bodybuilding. It's Arnold's origin story.

Originally, they had plans to do a Conan trilogy. This is why you don't see the full evolution arc of Conan by the end of this film. But as you pointed out, they were giving a hint or taste of the future with the closing scene and written narration. NOTE: Not as many people are aware, but they DID make the second film two years later, called Conan the Destroyer, but it wasn't as well received.

And you didn't notice and other viewers already said it, but Conan killed Doom with his father's sword
