What you are looking at the opening of the movie is the original sword-in-the-stone myth. Blacksmiths at the time were considered magicians. They built their forges next to outcroppings of hard rock where they could curve the shape of a sword into the stone and then pour hot metal into it to create the shape. It was very crude smelting process and only occasionally did they get a great sword, but when they did those swords became a legend, as did their wielders! The other thing you should understand is according to the mythology, Conan's people, the Cimmerians, were the last descendants of the Akkadians, who were the last remnant of the Atlantean's, which was the most powerful civilization on the Hyborian Earth for thousands of years. This Age of the Hyborian Earth lasted for thousands of years. The civilization we live in today has only been around for a handful of centuries!

One small detail that many people do catch but far more do not: The last man Conan fights in the big battle near the end was wielding Conan's father's sword. Conan cuts through it with his sword, the one he got from the giants in the tomb after he was set free. At the end of the movie, he uses its broken hilt to cut Thulsa Doom's head off and then discards the sword, closing the circle of when his people were murdered in the opening scene. His father's sword was made, used to defend his people, stolen, used against him, and he finishes the job his father and sword started. He revenges his people and closes the chapter, not holding onto the past any longer. Great bit of storytelling, that.

This is the one of the best movie scores ever made and I adore it: it makes the movie for me. RIP and Vale, Basil Poledouris. Fun fact time: 1. The guy telling them about the snake temples and selling them Stygian Lotus was played by Ron Cobb, the production designer on Conan, Alien and loads of other top movies. 2. Sandahl Bergman, who played Valeria, nearly got her finger cut off in one of the fight scenes, when the stuntman she was fighting missed his mark. She had to be rushed to hospital and it was touch and go whether the production would have to be abandoned. 3. Gerry Lopez, who played Subatai, wasn't a professional actor, although he had had a bit part in a surf movie. However that movie was directed by John Milius, and the two became freinds and surfing buddies, so when Milius got the gig directing Conan, he cast Gerry in the part. I think I'm right in saying that he never acted again (?).

When I was younger, I read the Conan comic books and planned of becoming an illustrator. Read the original novels by Conan creator Robert E. Howard. My son knows I loved the Conan films and comic books, so one day he did something with Alexa. I asked, “Alexa, what is best in life?” Alexa answered, “to crush your enemies. See them driven before you. And hear the lamentations of their women.”

I'll always appreciate the first Conan was rated R. The second one was 'cleaned' up so they could get kids in the seats while also having a much 'safer' storyline which feels like a video game quest compared to the first's coming of age and avenging his family. Both worth a watch but completely different in tone.

@@dansemacabre6515 That is not what happened with Destroyer. Milius was busy (with Red Dawn I believe) and the studio didn't want to wait to cash-in on the success of Conan and so we got Destroyer. The 'blacklisting' did happen until year later, and wasn't an actual blacklisting in the sense of what happened to suspected communists, but rather according to Milius that he felt that his later flops were less forgiven because of his politics. Conan was a success, as was Red Dawn, the flops Milius was referring to hadn't happened yet.

Arnold had retired from body building but he got in such good shape for this role he came out of retirement and entered the Mr. Olympia contest and won it for the 7th time. The Pict Scout in the scene where Conans village is attacked at the beginning was played by Franco Colombo one of Arnolds closest friends and training partners, Thorgrim, one of the lieutenants of Thusla Doom(specifically the bone who used but hammer)was played by another of Arnold's friends and training partners Sven-Ole Thorson.

Just because you hummed it: 1) The fanfare playing over the Universal logo was composed by Jerry Goldsmith, the greatest film composer ever, in 1997. It wasn't part of the original movie. 2) The score was composed by Basil Poledouris, another one of the great film composers, who sadly died far too young. Conan is one of his masterpieces, and his breakthrough movie score.

You should re-watch the scene when conan gets freed. If you look at the red haired man, he's crying as he chops at the chain. I think conan was the closest thing he had to a friend and releasing him was like releasing a favorite pet. Also, I'm sure that red haired man was the red haired kid who chained conan to the wheel. Conan spent years pushing the wheel and the red haired kid went to learn how to handle him.

I took it that conans owner might have seen him almost like a son. Of course the idea that keeping conan captive was like keeping an animal caged that should be running free. Cynical view; conan made his captor rich how many times over as a fighter and renown with war lords while he showed off his prize. Letting conan go was the only kindness conan got since his family died. This way conan might remember him fondly instead of eventually rising up one day and kill his master.

Some fun aspects. The crew tasked with building the sets and props were told to build things with actual thought of their use, like the wheel of pain is designed for grinding wheat or something. The wheel was so well designed, that when Arnie first tried to push it, the spun so easily, that the back spoke hit him from behind. A crew had to push in the opposite direction to give Arnie resistance. The dogs were so untrained, they attacked their handlers and really chased Arnie. When getting his face painted and hearing Mako's humming, Arnie was so soothed, he fell asleep. The director envisioned Conan as becoming a series like Bond, and that each year or so, would make another film chronicling Conan's rise to power, but they only got one sequel.

The "machine" is not for exercise (I can't believe you actually said that). It's either a grain mill or a water pump. The boys were taken as slaves to turn the wheel. All but Conan eventually died. Either wild dogs or wolves. He looked like easy prey to them. Subotai was played by Gerry Lopez, a champion surfer. The wizard was played by Mako, a famous actor back in the last century. The first words spoken by Conan were actually spoken by Genghis Khan.

oh ho ho ho .. how so few people answering actully know anything about the conan universe ... the machine , is NOT a grain mill . it does nothing it's just a huge weight for slaves to push around . it's called the Wheel of Pain . it's only purpose was to break a slave's will while making them stronger. it does nothing else. it is designed based off real world grain mills though so the misunderstanding is forgiveable. in the novel's and short stories it was even commented on why the machine isn't set to some task. the reasoning being if the slaves think they are working a task they have hope , if they are made to just toil endlessly for no reason , it will break them utterly.

Fun Fact: Aside from a bit part in a 1978 surfer movie by John Milius, Gerry Lopez (Subotai) had never acted in a movie before. Milius hired him for the role of Subotai, as they had been surfing buddies for years. Lopez now makes both surf- and snowboards in Oregon....And now, you know.

This legendary character has been around for over 90 years. From pulp magazines to a series of novels and long running comics by Marvel & Dark Horse. Conan did indeed embody the Barbarian archetype in sagas of sword and sorcery, such as Dungeons & Dragons, Sega's Golden Axe series, etc. This was only Arnold's 6th film and also his breakthrough role. The first time that Arnold was really, truly acting with both dialogue and action in one unique vessel. When I read the Marvel comics of Conan from before and after the movies, all I could see and hear was Arnold. The 1983 sequel, "The Destroyer" was more like a RPG come to life. The 2011 reboot with Jason Momoa in the title role is good, but not liked as much the originals. Arnold was going to become Conan for a 3rd time (2000-2010s) as Conan The King. Btw, you should check out Red Sonja (1985) with Bridgette Nelsen's film debut, pre-Rocky IV. Another Robert E Howard creation and known as the "She-Devil with A Sword". Conan & Red Sonja both existed in the same universe. In that movie, Arnold has top billing and he's not Conan. He plays Lord Kalidor aka Arnold playing Arnold with Conan-esque skills.

Film facts: Arnold had to lean out to do this film, whereas Mamoa had to bulk up! -The name of the soup was "split pea and HAND". -There was a franchise planned for Conan, like the Bond movies but after the sequel and Red Sonja under performed, it was scuttled. -The scene where Conan is drunk, was almost cut because the producer thought it lessened him but the director won out and it was kept in. -The swordmaster was the actual sword instructor for the movie. -The woman that is given to Conan was a pornstar who didn't know anything about the scene, that was to be filmed. Her reaction to seeing Arnold was genuine because that was the first time she saw him. Both Thulsa Doom and Conan's father are wrong. The strongest of steel will rust, the strongest of flesh will rot but the strongest of wills lasts forever. Conan survives because of the strength of his will and he overcomes/defeats Thulsa Doom because of the strength of his will. Also... Conan commits a huge blasphemy by praying to Crom for something. You don't ask crom for things, you thank him for the gift he's given you. Crom answers Conan prayer but makes him pay for it, for the rest of his life... And he's gonna live for a long time.

The device at the beginning is called a Wheel of Pain. It's a grain mill (mill stones in the center) designed to be push by thralls (slaves) to break their spirit and strengthen their bodies. Grain is put in the center and milled, like a windmill, but man-powered. He keeps saying "Crom" because to invoke his name is to curse. He's the kind of god that thinks "if you have the time to say my name, I haven't given you enough bad stuff to deal with."
@DenverStarkey

The wheel of pain isn't a grain mill it's soul purpose is to break the spirtis of those pushing it , part of that being that the machine is endless toil with no purpose. this much was said in the books/short stories . the idea that theya re actually doing somehting give's the slaves hope , so they made machine that does nothing beyond working the slaves. there is no grain and no greater purpose to the machine, thus the slaves pushing it lose all hope of an end to their toils and suffering.

Tori reacting to one of my favourite movies of all time?? That's a win-win for me! ❤ It really is a great movie and the best representation of the Conan character on screen hands down. So many great moments. Love the passion in Conan and Valeria's relationship - Sandahl Bergman is equally as bad-ass as Arnie. Subotei is great too - I especially love the very moving scene at Valeria's funeral pyre where because Conan won't cry, he cries for him. James Earl Jones makes a great nemesis as Thulsa Doom. And Basil Poledouris' lush score is one of my favourite all time soundtracks. It's a pity that the plans to make a trilogy didn't work out and we got a sequel that wasn't the one originally planned. Though over the years Arnie often talked about wanting to do a third King Conan movie. Great reaction from you, Tori - I loved moments like your response to when Doom turned into a snake and I'm really glad you enjoyed this movie 🙂 Can't wait to see your next one!

Loved this movie my whole life! THE BRUTALITY! Raw force/ power, muscles, whatever you want to call it. What is steel compared to the HAND 🖐️ that wields it? The visuals were intended to look like the fantasy art of Frank Frazetta! He officially gave Conan his signature “look” (on the covers of old old original Robert E Howard Conan short stories) he only ever looked like an ancient Roman… we’re talking about the 1930s here, and those stories STILL HOLD UP actually! until Frazetta came along, and comic books were also drawn of him later in the 1970s mainly but continued onward and upward. Know also that He-Man was supposed to be Conan for children. They did a good job without insulting the source if you ask me, because they gave HeMan the personality, morals, and secret identity of Superman! 😉

Most people dont notice it the first time they watch, but the sword that conan breaks is his fathers sword that Thulsa Doom gave to Rexor right after beheading Conan's mother. The sword his father forged, the sword that his father used as an example while telling Conan about Crom and the riddle of steel, the sword that killed his mother. conan takes up his fathers broken sword and uses it to behead Doom, he then discards the sword, which represented that whole first part of his life up to that point. When Thulsa Doom is trying to get in his head (maybe hypnotize) conan looks at his fathers sword and snaps to his senses. the whole thing is about that sword in a way.

Am I the only that thinks that Tori would totally be able to pull off a Valeria cosplay? Also did anyone tell her that the actor that played Thulsa Doom also did the voice for Darth Vader (both trying to play the father card to their adversary) as well Mufasa in the Lion King? Great reaction!

Thulsa Doom was originally the villian in stories about another of Robert E howards characters, Kull of Atlantis. Thulsa doom in the Kull stories is a Skull faced sorcerer( also the inspiration for Skeletor or he-man). James Earl Jones thulsa Doom is very similar to another Howard villian the character of Thoth Amon who features in one of the most famously theoretical Conan stories, the Phoenix of the sword as the villian and mentioned in two other stories written by Howard, The God inn The Bowl and the Hour of the Dragon. Thoth Amon like the films Thulsa Doom is a priest of a snake cult of Set

You gave such a great reaction. You got it. I see that very little in the young. This may be just coincidentally Arnold's best performance just for him being him barely speaking English and being built like he was . The director and his surfing buddy who played Subotai. I mean all of it and the production value and the depth they give to it all. This was not just a good fantasy movie it's a great movie period.

I noticed the describtion saying this was Arnolds first appearance. But he had appeared in two movies prior to this. The first was Hercules in New York, were he was credited as Arnold Strong. The second was the 1979 western comedy "The Villain". Yes Arnold was in a western. It's actually a very funny movie, definitely reaction worthy.

This, Conan the Destroyer and the 2011 remake are all based on the novels of the same name by Robert E. Howard. This was Arnold Schwarzenegger's first starring role after winning seven Mr. Olympia bodybuilding titles. His films prior to this include Hercules in New York, The Villain, Stay Hungry and Pumping Iron. This has the same composer as RoboCop

The wheel isn't for exercise: it's how machinery was run before electricity. Many of them ran grain mills, making flour so people could have bread. Watch Pirates of the Caribbean and you'll see that a donkey pulls the wheel that runs the blacksmith shop Will works in. Someone said that in the books, that particular wheel isn't hooked up to anything and is used solely for torture, which seems silly... even if it eventually became used just for torture, it feels like the better backstory would be that the mill it's attached to was abandoned or is in disrepair, and so the wheel was adopted for torture, but it doesn't make sense for a villain to just build a wheel for torture: you'd use one that is already built... and nobody builds a wheel without also building whatever it runs. If that claim was accurate, it feels like a mistake by Burroughs.

The fake blood was delivered to the set in a concentrate and had to be diluted to be usable, usually with water. However, since it was very cold for times, instead they used vodka, causing people to swallow the fake blood when they were supposed to spit it out, and went back to the special FX crew for more.

Should watch the extended cut. The added stuff with the prinecss having a change of heart and helping Conan sneak in the back way to kill Doom is good. And there is more dialog wit Conon and his friend, helps to show that Conan has a sharp mind too.

Originally, this was supposed to be a trilogy. They did make a second movie, "Conan the Destroyer", but the third movie never happened. Some people mistakenly refer to "Red Sonja" as a Conan movie, but it isn't. Arnold Schwarzenegger does appear in the movie, but his character is not Conan. "Red Sonja" is still worth watching (in my opinion).

the universe of conan that machine is called a wheel of pain . it's meant to just work the slaves to build their body and break their will. however, it is designed based off real world flour mills from anceint times. in the actual flour mill there's a huge center wheel that crushes wheat as it rolls over it. also think flour mills usually horses or oxen pulling the levers to rotate the grinding wheel , but i imagine some one at some point put people on it. but again in conan verse this is not a wheat grinder and as you can see there is no wheat , it's just endless work for slaves. man they really need to do another arnold conan movie give us a third and final part with Conan the king.
