Sam! I am glad to hear it was helpful. This was one of the things that was really frustrating to me about GA4 as well. Not sure if you've tackled the GA4 reporting world yet, but that was another area that was baffling to me. In 3:08 we can see your original campaign names. The original ones you've setup as the UTM variable. But we can't see them later in your GA4 report. I'm talking gmb, spring22, ... we can only see "signature". I assume this is why many people are here. Solution: You can deactivate "Auto Tagging" in Google Ads, and it should work. Or at least it is an important step in the right direction.

Hi Elias, thanks for the question. You *can* see the campaign info in GA4 but it's not as clean and easy as in UA. You will need to add a secondary dimension for session campaign. Regarding why you couldn't see all the campaign info (gmb, spring22, etc) in the GA4 report, that's just a function of what data is visible on the screen. You can add a filter to your Campaigns report (if you build one as I did in the video and also referenced in the blog below), to exclude traffic sources that don't have a manually entered campaign. www.rootandbranchgroup.com/utm-parameters-google-analytics/ I hope this is helpful. Thank you, really useful! I wanted to ask you if it´s confirmed that in GA4 we won´t be able to customize channel groupings; and if you know where can I see the new UTM variables such as marketing tactic and creative format? They don´t seem to be anywhere in GA4, and they are also not available in the "Explore" section to be used to define custom Adquisition Segments :s

Hi Santiago, thanks for the feedback. Glad this was helpful! In terms of those additional UTM parameters, my understanding is they will be made available in the future (who knows when). So no surprise that you can’t find them yet! In terms of custom channel groupings, I have the same understanding as you. Not available now in GA4 and not planned to be available in the future either. Thanks for this - really helpful. So I don't have Session Acquisition > Session source/medium as an option to add to the report. Is this linked to my permissions or a potential bug?

Hi Kate. This is a super weird and unsatisfying answer, but from what I've seen the Session Source / Medium report *does* seem to be buggy. Check out the comments in this video (specifically about creating the Source / Medium traffic report), and you'll see a mix of people who are grateful it worked for them...and some perplexed that it is not working. Even in my GA4 property, I've seen this metric occasionally vanish and no longer be available. It is available for me now, but I don't understand it. I think it may have something to do with the fact that it is a session scoped dimension (unlike First user source / medium, which is a user-scoped dimension), and session scoped dimensions are processed after user-scoped dimensions in GA4. I'm hoping this works itself out, but for now it is a bit of a mystery to me. Zack

Hi Lubna, if you use the Real time report, you should be able to see the campaign tagged traffic there. It's sometimes a little glitchy for me, but this is a good place to look. Once you start using your UTM appended URLs, it should show up in your data. Last thought: I have a number of "test" campaigns showing in my UTM data. I just make a note of when I finalized things so I can ignore the earlier dates in my date range selectors for reports. Not sure if that will work for your purposes as well, but wanted to share that my data doesn't look "perfect" but is still quite usable. Good luck!

Question: I was following your video step-by-step, but "Source / Medium" is grayed out in "Dimensions" (Editing report)...Upon rollover, tooltip states that "Dimension is incompatible with report" ... Upon a google search, it seems that the closest Dimension is "Session source / medium" . But why it was usable in your video and still visible but grayed out is strange. In any case, I chose that one, but I still see that the gmb campaign name is not obvious in the reports I customized per your video...It seems that the clicks are included in "google / organic" which makes sense, but how can I see the campaign name in the reports? (I've added Session Source and Session Source / Medium to my reports' customization, along with dimensions Session source/medium, Session source and Session campaign. Thank you for your help.

Hi Marc, Great questions. I have 2 answers that I'll try and do my best on here. 1.) Why is it Session source / medium vs source / medium? I believe that when I made the video, Google Analytics had some slightly different names for certain dimensions. You should absolutely be using Session source / medium, so that's the one! 2.) Where are the clicks from gmb? There are multiple UTM parameters you can use when you set up a tagged link. Three of them are relevant to your question. = this shows up as session source and drives the first half of the source / medium traffic dimension = this shows up as session medium and drives the second half of the source / medium traffic dimension (by way of unrealistic example, if you added "marc" for and "ison" for , you'd see "marc / ison" in your source / medium reports. = this drives the session campaign dimension. If you used "gmb" as your campaign parameter you should see "gmb" when you change your traffic dimension to Session campaign. It's also possible to add a "primary dimension" and a "secondary dimension" to a report so you can see (for example) both Session source / medium and Session campaign next to one another, should you so choose. Do you know if there is any way for Google Ads campaign to override the UTM for source/medium with auto-tagging enabled like in the previous version (there was an option before in UA). We would like to tag our ad campaigns instead of seeing google/cpc but still keep all the remaining auto-tagging data and benefits. Not sure if other users are facing this dilemma.

Thanks for the video, but you didn't show, where can I specifically enter my own UTM to the GA4. I recently paid for blog posts at some news web, and I have my custom UTMs. Where can I add them to GA4 that I can see that traffic came from the specific UTM, please? Thank you!

Hi Lukas, thanks for your question. You’ll see the UTM tagged campaign data in the campaign report in GA4 without entering your “own” UTMs. The URLs with your tagged UTMs do the work for you, and then GA4 simply picks up the tagged campaign traffic automatically by recognizing the UTMs and categorizing the traffic properly. Hello there! Glad the video was helpful. I appreciate you sharing the kind words. In terms of adding the content parameter to your URL, you can use that exact same Chrome extension. Whatever text you add after will be your content field. For example ‘a_version’ or ‘b_version’ or whatever. I hope that helps. Best of luck with your creative testing! Zack

Ahh, I see. Thanks for clarifying. In terms of , I have some disappointing news. It’s not currently supported in GA4. Wild, right? Based on this support article from Google, it seems like it’s probably on the development roadmap but just isn’t done *yet*. support.google.com/analytics/answer/10917952?hl=en#zippy=%2Cin-this-article If you have the option, I’d continue using UA for that specific function now and join me in crossing my fingers that GA4 gets an upgrade soon. 🤞

Hi, me again. So, I'm a little stumped here. I can track my UTM campaign with no issue, but now I'm facing another wall. So here's my situation... I added a UTM link in my email signature that links to our Subscribe form on the website. The UTM appears in GA4 with no issue. Note, I did create a tag for that specific form and can see that it triggers fine. Here's the scenario: User clicks UTM link in email signature, lands on the subscribe page, fills out the subscribe form and submits. Now, where in GA4 can I see the form submission based on this scenario.

Try the "Traffic acquisition" report (within Acquisition in your standard reports). Change the primary dimension for session default channel group to session campaign. Look for your campaign for the email signature. You can also use the search function above the primary dimension if necessary. Then, click the drop down arrow next "Event Count / All Events" to see a list of all your events. Choose the form submission event so you're only looking at that one. Does that get the job done? Hi! When I try to add source/medium as a dimension it appears in a faded our grey and is unclickable. This faded out grey starts at campaign and everything below it is unclickable. Wondering if you could help?

Hello Lucy. It looks like GA4 changed the interface a bit from when I had made this video earlier in the year. When I create a new GA4 test property now, I actually don't have to customize the report to add Session source / medium as a dimension. It is already available in the dropdown (along with Session campaign) for dimensions when I'm first looking at the Traffic Acquisition report. Do you see the same on your end? If you want to add and / or as additional dimensions, those were added in July of 2022 to GA4 and you can add them by customizing the report. Hope this helps. Zack

I manage three branches of a business at different locations in Google My Business for one client. Can I see the actual UTM info somehow in GA4 so i can see how many conversions we get for each separate UTM (branch) They all have campaign medium as maps and then campaign name is the actual branch name i.e New York, London etc Thanks. BTW The video is awesome and appreciated. I assume the Email source medium you reference is not a UTM but is built into Google's reporting now?

Hi Craig, thanks for the question. You can use GA4 to see your UTM info. You've used campaign medium as 'maps' and campaign name as the branch name. Have you also set up a parameter for ? You do need to set that parameter as well (source, medium, and campaign are all required UTM fields). Thanks for the video. I created an event report, and now when I go to the library and edit the report, I can't find how to filter the event name with a particular event. The event Name dimension is not available under Report Filter neither I can see it in Customize Card filter. The report is showing with all event names, I only want two events.

Hi Arif. Am I hearing you right that you want to create a report for a single event? If you let me know what specific event it is, I might be able to tailor more specific perspective. Otherwise, here are 3 options that could work for you: 1.) Do this in Data Studio (much easier filtering than in standard reports). Here's an example for the site search event with the search term event parameter: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y72knNV42a7agqs.html 2.) Do this in Explorations (much easier filtering than in standard reports). Here's an example for the video starts and complete events: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hJ9hlrmmuae9m3k.html 3.) If you register a custom dimension for an event parameter of your event, you may be able to access it that way with a Report Filter in a GA4 standard report. I did that to show a single event for scroll tracking that will show all pages where a scroll depth of at least 50% is achieved. @@rooted-digital Thanks for your reply. Appreciate it. I can do this in Data Studio and Explorations. However, if I click on the report filters in the event customized report feature, I can't find the event name parameter. Your blog post shows how to filter the report by country US. I wanted to filter the event report in the report filter something like this - event_name equals registration_complete. So this means you can't filter the report by event_name. So I am left with Data Studio and Exploration option only. Is my understanding correct?

@@MrAhmarif Hi Arif. I set up 2 filtered reports so far. One is for all events in country = US. The other is only limited to the scroll event. The filter is not based on the event name, but rather the event parameter showing the scroll depth (25%, 50%, 75%, etc). I am not able to find the event name in my list of filtering options, but I can find that event parameter after I registered it as a custom dimension. The event parameter in question is only associated with the scroll event, so it effectively filters me to the event that I want. Not sure if this is making sense. If you tell me more about the specific event you want to filter to, I can try and let you know if I think it would work. You can also search for “custom scroll depth tracking ga4” on the KZfaq channel and you’ll see how I set up this custom event that I’m filtering to. I think the part that makes it work for this filtering is the fact that I added a unique event parameter with the custom event AND registered that event parameter as a custom dimension in GA4.

Hi Zack! Thanks for this video. So, I setup my UTMs and added the link to an email signature in Outlook, but it seems like something is off in GA4. Is there a reason why I’m seeing ‘(not set)’ under ‘Session campaign’? I do see ‘outlook_email_signature / email_subscribe’ under ‘Session source/medium’. I'm wondering if I didn't name my UTMs properly. Here's how my UTMs were setup: : outlook_email_signature : email_subscribe : subscribe_email_link Appreciate any help you can offer. Thank you!

Hi Melissa, this is interesting. It seems like some of the UTMs are definitely working as you set them up. The 'Session source / medium' seems to be pulling in the and the exactly as you've created them. For example, if you had set as pepperoni and as pizza,, youur Session source / medium would show pepperoni / pizza (not sure about you, but that's my fave). If it were me, I might have chosen something a little simpler (maybe outlook for source and email for medium), but these UTMs are mostly about personal preference. Whatever allows you to keep it straight in your mind about what the data is showing. In terms of the (not set) for Session campaign, that is really weird. We have proof that the other utms are working from your Session source / medium info. What I'd do would be to double check the structure of the UTM tagged link. Is it possible there's a typo somewhere in there for ? You can also use the GA4 real time report to test it out. Use the card that shows Users and change the drop down from First User Source to First User Campaign (the UTM will apply to session data as well as User data) and then visit your site with the UTM tagged URL. You should be able to see the campaign there if it's set up properly. Hope this is a helpful start. Good luck!

​@@rooted-digital Well, I checked and there’s no typo. However, I do see where I messed up. I noticed there’s no inside the link! Instead, it shows . Looks like I inadvertently added the campaign name in the campaign term field and not in the campaign name field 😭 I’m gonna go ahead and make that change and report back.You deserve a whole 🍕pie! Hey yo! Glad you found it, Melissa. These UTMs sure can be finicky at first, but it will all get better in time. Congrats on finding this so quickly. This written version (www.rootandbranchgroup.com/utm-parameters-google-analytics/) might be helpful if you're looking for a quicker reference on any of this in the future and you don't want to hunt around in the video.
