Title: Once Upon a Forest
Created by: Campfire Stories
Synopsis: Maria was a romantic, animal-loving, dreamy child who, growing up, had a hard time conforming to the demands associated with the trajectory towards "a normal life". As a young adult she became depressed, and was encouraged by her therapist to go for walks in the forest. The myriad of funny-looking twigs and sticks she found along the way immediately put her on a path to recovery. Now, 25 years later, she's a celebrated "twig poet" whose art is shown in galleries throughout Sweden. When a climate related crisis strikes the forest where she lives and works, she's forced into a new type of creativity in order to save the place that once upon a time saved her.
Filmed in: Värmland, Sweden
Featuring: Maria "Vildhjärta" Westerberg & Johannes Söderqvist (vildhjarta.net/) and Martin Jentzen (www.jentzen.se/)
Produced, filmed and edited by: Mattias Olsson for Campfire Stories (www.campfire-stories.org/)
Sound mix: Boris Laible (www.borislaible.com/)
The films of the series "Something Beautiful for the World" explore how small acts of love and kindness have the potential to ripple out and change the world, touching hearts and minds in ways that we could never begin to imagine. We'll be sharing a total of 12 short films, from across five continents - releasing one per month for the whole year of 2024 - four from each filmmaker.

We are depressed because we don't understand where we belong. At least this is my point. I'm trying to get help everywhere from anyone. I sometimes talk to much of myself to people hoping they will find the solution. The truth is we gotta listen to learn, the problem is when I ask questions to others trying to know more about that so I can get inspired the risk is being judges as nosey 😅 so need to be careful when approaching others lol

I have learned to make a hot beverage, bring a box of tissue, and turn off my phone when I watch these videos. I have cried so much this past year with climate anxiety, and felt so alone. I’m autistic and nature is the only place I find peace with my mind. Today on my walk the honey bees were out. We should have snow right now. I’m so scared. @@Sup1719creation is ongoing and we are part of it, but our economic system has made us believe that we are kind of seperate from nature and creation as whole. We are not. And that is precisely why it matters what we do, it has an impact on where we as a species are heading. And right now there is a real chance that we as humans drop out of the ongoing evolutionary process. We need to realize that we are part of the whole, we are one with all other living beings, everything and everyone is interconnected.

I live in a Eucalyptus Forest in Australia and many of the trees in this forest pre-date White Settlement in this area, meaning, they are over 200 years old! The forest is so alive, so vibrant, so full of life, it is beautiful! At one time, about 75 to 100 years ago, most of the trees here were cut down to stumps, presumably to try to graze sheep here, but the soil here is poor and doesn't grow grass very well. Some of the stumps died, but most of them sent out suckers and now those suckers are full grown trees, once again! No matter what, Nature will win!

I'm a fanatic wildlife/pollinator gardener in the central California foothills, and since I retired, I've been planting hundreds of trees/shrubs/plants in ever increasing numbers on my 10 acres. The results have been astounding, with a large increase of wildlife. I also have a huge pond that I've been filling as needed during our dry years, and the amount of life it supports is magical-- frogs, dragonflies, fish, etc. I put out tons of birdseed every year, and those birds are preyed on by many different falcons, hawks, and others. I can't imagine not living in the country-- every day is filled with joy! Plus, I have 3 dogs that I adore......... So, paradise! Thanks for sharing!

I started to move baby oak trees out of my yard because I hated to see oak trees die. I also started adding flowers to the woods that I know belong there because I saw them here as a child ... The wood poppies immediately took hold. Last year I added coral bells (which i have seen in the woods, not just at Lowe's!). This film gives me so many more ideas. I have begun to realize that biodiversity isneeded. It is already biodiverse where I live, but still not enough.

This is beautifully documented. The foresters and timber industry not only clearcuts all around our 11 acres here in Oregon but then they also spray poisionous chemicals to "control" undergrowth, and so called pests. It is devastating and very hard to fight. Just one of the many broken parts of our broken system. Thank you for making this film❤ it is very important. Not giving up yet! In gratitude, Theresa

Maria and her companion have done something quite marvellous that if left undisturbed will live on and benefit others for hundreds of years after we have all passed. Blessings to both of these amazing people. I live among great areas of monoculture both trees and grass with only the benefit being to those who make money from such barren landscapes. When I walk in an old forest I feel such relief from the stresses of the world. It is almost as if the old trees stand guardian and protect those who wander within their realm..

Yes I feel the same, and I’m devastated when men chop down our trees, we are all responsible to take care of the forests the wildlife. The men who chop them down they don’t own the forest it’s not theirs to destroy, God owns it all, He gave it to us to share it and take care of it. To safe guard it? there is a judgment coming, those who ruin or do harm to the world will pay a terrible price. And it’s coming fast, the second coming of Christ to destroy the wicked and those who destroy the earth. It’s coming !!!

Thank you/Stor Tack Maria, Johannes and Mattias for this film. And to Martin Jentzen for his words: "... people might come here for your art. But maybe they leave with the forest". I hope so! And I hope that many others do like Maria & Johannes. Greeting and hug/Hälsning & kram från Värmland Andrea

What an utterly beautiful and profound film - thank you Mattias and all those involved. This film shows just how interconnected we all are if only we can be open to it like Maria and Johannes. As Martin the forest engineer says: ‘The forest is always a process; we’re always in the middle of a process.’ Life is a process and we are that process too. What Maria and Johannes have done is truly inspiring. There are no longer any boundaries between them and the forest. Schools should organize visits as there is so much to learn here.

Beautiful project and legacy. We wiped out most woodland planting creatures - our atonement and sentence is to perform their function - accelerate the recovery of ecosystems - we can be natures seeds spreaders too. Many humans around the world are awakening to this calling all at once.....everyone should do this in their garden, farms, parks, balconies.

Hey, I'm Irish, I clicked through to your UT channel and saw your drone footage of forests in westport. If I'm in the area, would love to go ancient foresting with someone knowledgeable and passionate about our trees, if that is you hit me up. We could make a group of it.

Your comment about childhood struck home. As a loving creative little girl, my ideas dreams and way of being were 'taught' out of me creating a life of anxiety and depression. Now as an adult, I've rescued that beautiful, loving, fun and creative little girl and brought her forward with me. I listen to her and together we are moving forward into the life we are learning and teaching each other, but mostly her doing the teaching. Thank you for this. It resonates profoundly.

What wonderful work they have done and continue to do… her art is beautiful… and I’ve always said that nature is the best artist… she has given new life to what she has found in her forest as artwork… without destroying anything. I understand your connection to nature… I’m just saddened by how terribly we have treated nature. I hope we collectively will be smarter. Wishing you Peace 🕊️ 🌜🌞🌛

I am a poet too. I have a kind of inherent fear of lonely people. Life seems to be forcing me into a lonely end. I am fearful of ending my final chapter in this way. This woman has found something to offset the fear. There are many diagnoses a doctor can give you that quite literally do not exist in one person in a forest. An example might be ADHD. Right at the top of the stack of man made-up conditions. The medicalisation of anxieties and living disorders. I can hear the anxiety in her voice, but it is sated by her forest and art. How fortunate her mother left all this wonderland for her. ❤

I gave up my life of adventure for an office job so my family wouldn’t be so disappointed in me and maybe they’d talk to me. I’m a little over 6 months in, they were SO happy for me at first, they even came to see my office! Now things are right back to how they were except I don’t have the time or energy to do what makes my heart happy- be kind, spend quality time in the woods, make art, explore, do things for people just because… I just spent a week in the mental hospital, I wanted to unalive myself because of how dead I already felt inside with nothing to look forward to except work, sleep, work, sleep, one week of vacation a year. I even work a “fun” office job because I’m at a ski resort but I don’t have the energy to take advantage of it. Anyways. This video felt like talking to an old friend and remembering who I am. Thank you for making these.

I can’t tell you how much I needed to see this film and beautiful lady who has such kindness and wisdom. I too have suffered with anxiety since childhood so I can relate to how deeply important it is to come back to yourself and re awaken in truth, acceptance and love for all the wonderful, healing nature that is actually on this planet we all think is so dreadful! It takes a certain stillness within oneself to truly be able to start to feel this again after an eternity of being numb and dulled down. Thank you so much for this film and thank you to the beautiful couple in it!

I love the beauty of this film and the wisdom and strength of Maria. Her candor in describing her depression after being limited by sociological enforcers and influencers in her life calling her naive. I love how she later returned to her inner wisdom, returned to the forest, returned home. And the result was peace, fulfillment, and actions for healing: healing the heart and mind, healing the monoculture forest. Thank you Reflections of Life, Campfire Stories, and Happen Films :)
