Yeah, the Columbia River Flood Basalt was an absolutely incredible series of eruptions. Those columnar basalt layers were erupted in a single pulse. Hard to believe.

Ooh! I know where that is! It looks like you approached it from the south. Next time you should keep going down Hwy 20 past Brothers and Hampton to Glass Butte and pick up some obsidian.

What you call "mushroomed basalt" is pillow basalt. it is where the lava pushed into water and had rapid cooling.

I also tend to almost never camp in organized camp. Partially because I like to be remote and as a weekend warrior that is rare to find a camp empty. But because water is so scarce in Utah almost all lakes and rivers are surrounded by organized camps. There are some really beautiful lake I want to camp near and doing it in an organized site is the only way. Also they are often next to the places with the incredible views like this one. Loved this episode.

If you're in CA you can go over hwy 108 toward Bridgeport and the Bodie ghost town and find those hexagonal columns of basalt. Theres a National Forest geological site called Columns of the Giants off 108 and across the Stanislaus river thats very similar and very interesting.

I agree Donald. Don't pass up a great camping opportunity just because it's a campground. Lacking huge crowds, or even small ones, some of these campgrounds offer a few conveniences that come in handy, especially when you have the whole place to yourself!

Indeed. It was a pretty primitive campground as it turned out, pit toilets and no water at all...perhaps this makes it less appealing to some...fine by me, heh. :-)

It's funny, due to various circumstances I have stayed in more developed campgrounds over the past year than I had over the previous four years combined, and I have largely enjoyed all of them, even when I ended up in a large and nearly full campground in Colorado last year. There really are some beautiful spots that it would be a shame to miss out on.

We do a lot of blm and primitive campsites. It’s pretty nice most of the time. We’re only getting into more dispersed stuff this next year or so for the doggo to have some more freedom

Indeed, I am really happy with how this has come together and how well it works for the way I travel. I still have a few little projects in mind to finish dialing it in, but it's so nicely functional at this point that after spending so much time in the garage spanning 2023 I find myself just wanting to go out instead of doing more work on it. 😄

That happens a lot actually. I usually secure the rear latches when I'm still standing on the tailgate and very often forget the front latches by the time I simply step down to the ground. 🤣 In fact I've driven for hours down the highway with NONE of the latches latched. There's not too much to worry about, the weight of the roof plus simply airflow keep it closed. I imagine the biggest potential issue might be in heavy rain, without the latches squeezing the seals, perhaps water could ooze in. Honestly I should use a whole "prefllight" checklist before driving anywhere, ever. One day you're gonna see me going down the road with the bumper swing out still swung out. 😆

That is some pretty impressive scenery now !!! The drone footage was crystal clear and high detail, did you get a new drone?

No, same drone I've been using since December 2021 (and even then, I bought it used off eBay). The footage it yields generally looks very sharp and clear, but KZfaq's processing compresses the video data, and depending on various factors within a given segment of footage, sometimes their compression mashes it up worse than other times. Unfortunately what you end up seeing at your end is always degraded from the actual video file I upload. Sometimes parts come through looking clean and sometimes it gets frustratingly mushy. Lucked out with this drone footage this time. :-)

I still make cowboy coffee sometimes, even at home where I normally use an electric percolator...cowboy coffee yields a uniquely superb and immensely digestible cup of joe that I still like to revisit. I'll tell you what happened though. At some point last year, I was camped with Jason and Meagan, and one morning Meagan poured me a cup of coffee she had made, and I was just floored by how good it was. Part of it was certainly the coffee itself, but she uses a French press, and I remembered that many years ago I too used to make coffee in a (more typical glass) French press at home, and loved the coffee it made. So I decided to experiment with French press again. The nice thing about the French press approach - vs cowboy coffee - is that I just have to bring the water to a boil then pour it in. Cowboy coffee requires more steps and more attention (to prevent the dreaded boil-over which I've experienced numerous times LOL) during the early morning hours when I often also want to be filming the fleeting light of sunrise, so there is an additional practical element to shifting to the French press. I still carry my little kettle that I use for cowboy coffee so the option is always there. 🙂

Some great spots along that stretch of river. Fly fished it a few times. Nothing wrong with an established campground every now and then, especially when you have it all to yourself. Summer camping is extremely overrated and this just shows that.

Hmm, that's troubling to hear. I manually manage the ad placement to ensure they show up at logical chapter breaks I've edited into the video (and to reduce the number of ads KZfaq places automatically). There are only _supposed_ to be three ad breaks: One at 3:55 where the video goes dark at the end of the drone footage of driving down off the plateau; one at 8:01, the video goes dark between discovering the campsite and setting up camp; and one at 11:55 between going to bed and the morning sequence. Please let me know if you saw more breaks than that, or if they were not at those timestamps. The exception would be if you skip forward in the video...I've noticed that if an ad break gets skipped by jumping forward, KZfaq will throw in the commercials at a random other moment. In a video of this length, if I do nothing, KZfaq will insert at least five ad breaks. I try to strike a balance between the necessity for ad revenue and maintaining the flow of the story, so I generally edit my videos into chapters that are roughly 4 to 6 minutes long depending on what content I've captured, and build in logical break points for the commercials to play. When I check the playback via a couple other test accounts on other devices, KZfaq generally respects my ad placement (again, unless I don't watch straight through beginning to end). Let me know what you remember from your viewing experience...thanks!

Actually, I deliberately look for screw cap bottles for camping because I never finish a bottle in one day and resealing the bottle by shoving a punctured cork into it is far more dangerous than screwing a cap back on. 😄 I know you were joking around, but I'll take the opportunity to deliver my screw-cap spiel: If the French had had the technology to seal wine bottles with screw caps a thousand years ago, they absolutely would have. Cork was simply the best available tech. It provides no benefit, but on the flip side, tainted cork ruins approximately 5% of bottles sealed with cork. Nowadays you'll find many high end winemakers around the world opt for the reliability of screw caps or cork-shaped plastic composite stoppers rather than take risks with what is essentially tree bark. THAT SAID...the screw top wine in this video was a cheap bottom-shelf bottle. 🤣

I really like BLM campgrounds. First come, first serve - they all seem to be designed/built to the same specs. A few that I have camped in have had an Iron Ranger (fee box with envelopes). $12/night. We were camping at a small campground last year at the end of October, I got up late at night to answer the call of nature.. came back to my truck five minutes later and there was a raccoon in my camper..

I'll give you a hint look up Prineville resivour and you will be able to find the 8 campgrounds located after the damn . And another hint the long gravel road is oregon highway 27 yes its classified as a highway. Don't go on the weekends it's always packed , and do t go late summer the water will be a trickle

I've always found that the best kind of developed campgrounds are always the empty ones. My only fault with trash pandas is that they never clean up their mess when they leave. Sorta like a lot of Millenials I know. 😎

11:56 - be careful with boiling water with these gas ‘towers’ at these tables. - especially if people are also sitting at them. They are more likely to tip over if the something is knocked… and anyone at the table is in a horrible position to get scalded. Due to the nature of these / hiking sites it’s not going to be a short trip to local hospital. Better to keep the cooker lower down or on the ground.

Curious. How has dust intrusion been? Your about the only one I see use your cab over rtt in the same area I camp.

I have virtually zero dust incursion...now. LOL The camper itself is very well sealed against dust, but the weak link has been the truck bed. The Frontier has multiple openings hidden up under the bed rails that lead straight outside and bring in dust...I've been hunting them down over the years and sealing them with Gorilla tape. Then last year I installed the RokBlock tailgate seal kit which has worked well to block off the massive openings around the tailgate as well as eliminate drafts in winter. Sorry I must've missed this comment, just found it. I generally stay dry, but the Topo isn't 100% perfect in pounding rainstorms with high winds...in sustained winds, some water drops manage to squeeze in through the tent window zipper on the windward side of the tent. For the most part, I bring more water into the camper on my coat and boots - and by breathing - than comes in any other way.

I got it last summer, though it didn't appear in a video here until I think October of last year. It's an upgraded GMRS antenna from Alamosa Antenna. It is a Stanley French press integrated into an insulated cup: amzn.to/3s2pKTt I got it because I was looking for a small French press to use for camping...this one was well reviewed and the traditional mottled green texture reminded me of my dad's Stanley thermos when I was a kid. 🙂 It makes good coffee and holds the heat SO much longer than the insulated cup I'd been using for the past several years. When I got it, I was unaware there's apparently some kind of fad currently with Stanley cups. 😆

Is that an FRS antenna on the front? If so what brand set up and how’s it doing for you ?

It is GMRS (which overlaps FRS channels). Made by Alamosa Antenna, connected to my Midland GMRS radio. It's working well, though I haven't yet really had opportunity to truly put it to any sort of extreme test. It came recommended from a buddy whose opinion I trust and I stumbled on them offering a show discount at Expo Mtn West last year and decided to pull the trigger on it.

For a number of reasons, I no longer publicly share the locations I go to. Not to be a gatekeeper at all - I encourage anyone and everyone to get out there and explore the amazing public lands at our disposal, and places like this canyon campground are truly accessible to anyone with any vehicle. No one told me about this canyon or these campgrounds...I found them just by scouting around satellite imagery in Google maps...anyone can do it (and canyons are especially easy to spot 😉). When you research, explore, and make your own discoveries, the experience is that much more rewarding. 🙂

I'm not sure about the reason for not sharing the location, and I hope I'm not defeating the purpose of not sharing. But you can take the screen shot and then use Google lens to get an idea. The picture of the river and cliff worked particularly well

I see you have your front license plate on your dashboard. Is that an acceptable solution when you can't mount it on your front bumper? Different states, different rules..

No, technically it's not acceptable. 😆 I still need to finish this detail of the front bumper. It's not that uncommon to see around here though, and I've crossed paths with plenty of LEOs with my plate like this (and my rear plate still unlit 😬). The cops around here generally have bigger fish to fry. I suppose at 2:10 am (just after the bars are required to close) it might get used as an excuse to pull me over, but I am pretty much never on the streets at 2:10 am. 😴😄

All three campsites I checked out in this area were $8 per night. This was a fairly primitive campground, it had pit toilets and no running water.

This was a couple of weeks ago, I actually filmed this on my way to Jason's Patreon/tree falling event. Looks like I might have a day with no rain today so maybe I can get this pulled together today. I sure wish my garage was big enough to fit my truck. :-)

@@darrylk808 Haha, indeed, my whole life I've had to just do all kinds of stuff in the rain, but this install will temporarily create some vulnerabilities to water incursion, so I need a dry day. As it turns out, we had a nice day today and I made some good progress. It's raining again already this evening though 😆
