Waking up in Machame camp this morning was surreal. The mist had settled in and it was cold. But that quickly changed after some hot breakfast from ClimbKili's mountain chefs and some rousing song and dance from the entire crew! Definitely got us pumped to start the hike from Machame camp up to Shira camp, gaining another 1,000 meters of altitude! We enjoyed clouds most of the day as we climbed fairly steep terrain through the moorlands of Kilimanjaro. It wasn't until we were nearly to camp when the clouds parted and we were able to get our first glimpse at the peaks of the mountain. It was amazing to see, but also daunting because of how high they seemed! After a short acclimatization hike, we settled into the tents and sleeping bags, not anticipating getting much sleep due to the high winds and cold evening temperatures. But what a day it had been!
