Nortent have been great with their communications about this and agree that if you are using the tent in winds above 40 mph, then you should be double poling.
They have been trialing 9.5mm poles and are sending me some for testing.
On reflection, my statement of not above 30 mph was incorrect. The tent was fine up to 40 mph as measured. it was strong gusts above that, that I could not measure, that were above the tents limits. But, as I did, going out camping in strong winds is at your own risk and I cannot gurantee the preformance of this or any tent. The responses from Nortent, one of which is shown below, have only deepened my respect for the company.
Designer Kjetil, went on to say:
"Keep in mind that the red poles make the Vern as stable as it is. They "connect" the blue and black poles together, leaving a freestanding structure. Removing the red poles would leave you with a typical "tunnel" tent. Facing the short end of any tunnel tent towards the wind more or less removes the brute force on the poles, as the wind then more or less only pushes the fabric in front of the tent facing the wind. This leaves all faith in strong guy lines and fasteners, which is no problem at all. Tunnel tents are well known for their resilience in high winds as long as you face the short end towards the wind. In Norway, these tents are particularly popular, especially for polar explorers, etc. However, you do not get the freestanding, stable structure as mentioned above. Additionally, tunnel tents can be wobbly in high winds, even though they are very reliable when used correctly. For that reason, we actually have a new series coming up and have been developing it for a year, "LY," taking advantage of the tunnel tent's advantages. Nevertheless, the Vern is by far a more stable all-rounder with its freestanding design that I like a lot.
I am always interested in feedback to make Vern even better. Adding 10 mm poles would improve its stability even more. With that said. Evolving is important, and listening to end-users like yourself is crucial for us. I think this is a strength, not a weakness, regarding our commitment to always evolving based on actual real-world "data." Poles breaking in storm gusts may not be uncommon and I do not think there is something wrong with a tent for this reason, but we wish to perform better than that. Poles breaking in storm gusts are not a fault but an opportunity to make the tent even better. I certainly hope that people in general see this as our philosophy and strength, not an attempt to take advantage of "free upgrades" because of us upgrading our tents. As upgrades at NORTENT is a never ending story. As it should be... Without it you are left with a static and "dead" product. :-)"
