Nice one Dave! The number of pole crossing points struck me too, and I just love how strong and sturdy everything about this tent feels. I think if Nortent can find anywhere to "add lightness" and bring the weight down a bit, this tent could wipe the floor with many rivals. I wonder if your dog could shoulder the poles to help you out? 🤣 James.

One problem with most tents these days is they’re not long enough or wide enough. 200cm sounds long if you’re about 177cm like I am, but then add the loft of your sleeping bag at the head and foot. I have a Marmot Hammer 2P mountain tent that’s 84”/215cm long inside and my -25F/-31C Feathered Friends sleeping bag (6’/183cm max user height) and both my Feathered Friends and NEMO 0F/-18C bags (6’6”/198cm max user height) press pretty hard against the ends. I often sleep with the door unzipped so my feet stick out a bit and my head isn’t pushing against the wall, but that means I have to bring the 1.5lb/0.67kg vestibule that I don’t otherwise need along. Being able to lay 2 25”/63cm pads side-by-side while having some room between them and on either side would be nice, too, both for comfort and to minimize the bags pressing against the tent and compacting the down. So a tent that’s at least 250cm long from the floor to a minimum of 30cm up and a minimum of 180cm wide from end to end really seems like what manufacturers should be offering for winter/mountain/glacier use. You can always sleep with your legs elevated on your pack in the shorter tents, which will probably help a lot with leg soreness the next day but won’t be very comfortable at night.

I have been using the Marmot Thor 2p for years here in the canadian winters. Very strong tent with 6 poles that can support lots of snow . But my tent is quite long to setup because all the poles get to go throught sleeves. I prefer the structure of the Vern 2 though , easier to set up and the inner is attach to the outer fly. It would be ideal for setting up in bad weather compared to mine. Thanks for the review ! Keep them coming ! Subbing to the channnel

Looks a strong tent would be interested to see it in real world conditions. I’ve yet to see the vern 1 in properly strong winds so reserving judgement on that one also but again it looks very robust. Definitely where the 2 is concerned it’s great value for money on paper. It has a limited UK market appeal imo, clearly designed more for a Scandinavian market and a pulk where weight is less of a concern. Much like the Hilleberg tarra you referenced in the video. 👍

Hi Dave. I hope it wasn’t coming across that I was having a pop. I just mean that until this tent (and Vern 1) is field tested in really strong winds its performance remains a bit of conjecture. Vern 1 is being touted on lots of channels as a competitor to the soulo but I’ve seen the soulo in measured 58 mph winds (Tom Heaney channel) so it’s tried and tested. I’ve had tents that have both underperformed and overperformed in high wind based on my initial opinions of their construction. As an example my Samaya Assaut 2 in measured 50 mph performed better than my Hilleberg Jannu in measured 50mph. This is the opposite of what I would have expected based on my opinion of their weight and construction. The Vern tents definitely look extremely capable but as they are so new to the market, I haven’t yet seen them really tested in the way the soulo and other tents have been. No doubt it’s only a matter of time! Cheers

Got back two weeks ago from a 8 day Lake District trip with the Vern 1 (2024) and really liked the tent and its performance. I ordered the PC version of the Vern 1, too. This will be great when I am based at a camp site and have the tent pitched ove day! If I'd be camping with a significant other, I'd go for the Vern 2! Thanks for the intro! Had the Exped Orion III for some time. About the same weight but the space in the apsis was too small. The Vern 2 will also be great for kayaking. It is free standing, roomy, and storm proof. That ticks all the boxes for sea kayaking...

Only got a little snow at the end of the week but lots of rain and wind. It was beautiful... The tent is really great! Cooking in it works really well due to the big vestibule. It is also quite in the wind when properly pitch. But also stands good when you can't pitch it properly due to uneven ground.

Seems like a very, very sturdy 4-season tent. Looking forward to seeing it being put through the test, although the verdict can probably already be written: rock solid/'bomb proof'. The attention to details looks very nice. (The mats seem a bit on the short side, at least for my taste that is. Wow, what a tent! Looks really unbudgeable, and there are plenty of people who will buy for that alone. I'm a bit surprised that the pole crossing points aren't locked together in any way, as I'd have thought that would increase structural strength even more. It would be good to see this up against the much lighter Kuiu Storm Star 2 (my current yardstick tent) in some seriously rough weather.

Design wise, Nortent is just hitting it out of the park time after time, it seems. They remind me of Slingfin in many ways, but since Nortent uses the all-in-one pitch approach instead of the inner first pitch, I think Nortent is the big winner between the two. Also, the Nortent vestibule design is head and shoulders above almost everyone else's that I've seen so far, even Durston... Hopefully we'll see some lighter weight materials in future versions, because if Nortent can get the weight of the freestanding Verne 1 down to 1.5 Kg, it would rock :)

Perfect! My need is not for back packing, but for campsite touring in Europe or even fly and camp. I hope to do Italian Lakes, Slovenia, Austria, Dubrovnik, Paris and Ronda where I check my camping gear. The massive entrance will be great to store my rolling thunder bag (if I don’t have a hire car). The massive double doors on each side to give ventilation in hot weather and let me enjoy the views. I also have a tarp to give some shade if required or shelter when sitting out in rain. Hope you enjoy your NT Verns as Im sure I will too. Be careful with the sparks from your stove 🤞. Thanks J

I traversed the Swiss Alps in 1981 and wild camped several times above the snow line using a Caravan Keb tent - a tent with just two upright poles. (lets say one would want to pack down after a very wet night). That would be another huge advantage and something I value a lot in Hilleberg tents. In general, I prefer this way of pitching tents over other tents that require to pitch the innertent first, before throwing the outer tent over it, especially when pitching in rain. I own the Hilleberg Allak 2 and got to appreciate this feature a lot and would not want to miss it on any tent. The Allak 2 is a bit tight for 2 people and I was looking at the Allak 3 because of that. However, the Vern 2 might sit at the perfect spot in between but with better sheltered vestibules, e.g. for cooking in the rain. And then there were some teasers by Nortent that they will even release a Vern 3 🤯

Love your reviews Dave. Just wondering if you have a review of a 3 person tent you recommend, have recently started going on adventures with both my kids & while I am a petite 5’4” my daughter is 5’10” and son is 6’3”. Taking 2 tents is obviously an option but I would prefer to take one we can share so we can spread equipment between us and lighten the load and our footprint when setting up camp. Any suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated 😊

For something weatherproof, I'd like to see a comparison between this and the Locus Gear Khafra Sil. A complete setup with one of their inners and the groundsheet is very spacious, much lighter, and only uses one central pole. Oh and also cheaper. The Nortent looks great but almost too complicated / over-engineered, and that weight is crazy too. Nortent's 3D renders are confusing and deceptive too. I quote from their images "Each sleeping pad on all models measures 190 x 60cm" - Huh? What sleeping pads are that size? They chopped off 5cm from both the length and width of a standard long + wide pad (195 x 65cm). Seems dishonest to me.
@Fellmandave1
@Fellmandave1 3 ай бұрын
Hi Chris. Never seen Locus gear before. I see you have to buy direct from Japan, is that the case? I agree that Nortents diagrams leave a lot to be desired, but dishonest, definitely NOT.

@@Fellmandave1 Yes that’s correct. And need to wait about 4-6 months for them to make and deliver it. But their pyramid style tents look like some of the best. And apparently that design is very good in snow and wind. I think people would have to have a very niche / specific use case to justify the extra weight of tents such as this Nortent, or the ones you compare it too. And something like the Locus Gear would still be great in foul conditions.

I am no tent designer, but I dont see why, all that would change would be the angle that the poles cross. Key factors are the strength of the poles/ materials themselves, size of panels, number of crossing points, guy out location and number, plus aerodynamic shape. What do you think?
