Yes! Proper boot care, cleaning waterproofs, drying out down gear that has accidentally got wet, storing down sleeping bags. I’ve googled it all but most are articles trying to sell you products or it’s someone’s blog and the advice is lost in some lengthy story of their backpacking trip.

@@NoahSaunders29 My Rab Ascent down sleeping bag comes with a pretty large material storage bag. You should not store down compressed, when you are not using it, I keep mine in the storage bag in my loft, have done for years. It gets used a couple of times and year and performs perfectly.

Just curious, as your a farmer how do you feel about people camping on your land? I grew up on a farm and my grandfather wouldn't tolerate it. Though I now have a different view as long as permission sought, and no trace left.

I have cows and horses, and they can be spooked easily and injure you, especially at night if something is in the field and they start running. (We have bear, coyotes, rare - but mountain lions, etc.) So, hard pass. 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫 My farm backs up to 4,000 acres of a state park, so there are plenty of places to camp there. 🥰
@daitallon
@daitallon 2 жыл бұрын
True, with livestock on arable land could be dangerous for all, we have a few hundred acres of wood land which we loved as kids and still love to this day. And the farm is in a valley in north wales so plenty of areas to camp away from the pastures.

Was in the Campsies over Xmas. Peace and quiet...utter bliss. The tubular bandage for the gas cannister is a stroke of genius and something I'll be adding to my kit. Thanks for the tip! Here's one in return...Potassium Permanganate. Can be bought at most aquarium/pet shops or online. Two grains purifies a ltr of water. Stains it pink to purple. Antibacterial, antifungal, so can be drank, (after twenty mins but I leave it forty-five mins), used to cook, bathe, wash clothes, treat wounds and wash dressings. Great for athlete's foot, trenchfoot, etc. It's use by some countries to purify their national water systems. As a bonus it also removes two heavy metals. The bigger, added, bonus though, is it's fire starting ability. A small heap with a few drops of glycerine dripped onto it (baking aisle in supermarkets) creates an incredible heat in a matter of seconds that runs a few thousand degrees high. Disclaimer: _Avoid breathing in the fumes, which last a few seconds!_ Failing glycerine, granulated sugar will do in equal measure to to PotPer. Mix them both by scraping them together with a twig. *Don't use your bare fingers or the hot flame will melt them off!* 🔥😳😂 I wouldn't advise it as a permanent and only means of purifying water, alternating with bleach/chlorine, iodine and boiling, as I do, but weight-wise I find it next to nothing and a small phial goes a long, long way. Anyone interested can Google it. Along with other stuff mentioned, it's worth remembering it may purify water from a river, stream, puddle, even a septic tank...but water will still require filtering. Thanks for uploading!

The other day I desided to test out a new tent and sleep outside in it. As by the weather forecast I prepared for down to -20. It turned out it was only just -4 and I wast way, way, way to hot 😀 No wind at all. That helps. Well I've only complained twice in my life. Once when a friend actually died from the cold in about -25 C and the other time was on Vatnajökull in a snowstorm.

I'm not too sure about this one because much of the cold radiates from inside the canister so insulating it could trap the cold in. I suppose the effectiveness depends on the outside temp.

Hi Paul, thanks for another good video. The cold and ice water in the bottles made me think of something I came across recently... What's you thoughts on this - Using a Nalgene bottle as a hot water bottle? It keeps you toasty at night and you can use the water for breakfast. It will not be a solid ice block etc. After a bit of research, I've found that Nalgene can take the hot boiling water OK and they do not leak any nasties into the water. Cap sealing is also good. You could belt & bracer it by maybe putting the bottle in a big zip bag. A heating and hydration source. Win Win, right?
