In this video, we show you how to put up a camping tarp to create additional shelter from the rain when you are camping.
Follow the steps to see how to put up a tarp alone (without help from others) using tarp poles.
We are using an Easy Camp 3m x 3m tarp kit that includes the tarp flysheet, two tarp poles, guylines, and tent pegs. However, you can use this technique to pitch any tarp using poles instead of trees.
We also look at how you can use a tarp to build a sheltered entrance to your tent.
I was lucky to have a little helper in this video. But it's easy to do this yourself.
1. From the ridge line, peg out the two guylines.
2. Repeat for the other end of the ridge line.
3. Insert the poles to push the tarp up.
If it gets windy and you need to temporarily get the tarp down, remove the poles and peg it to the ground. As soon as the weather improves, push the poles back in to put the tarp up again.
More details on the tarp kit can be found here: www.getoutwiththekids.co.uk/c...
Camping tarps are lightweight and a great addition to your camping kit.
They provide an easy way to extend your living space and help keep you dry when camping in wet weather.
Plus, it's MUCH safer to cook under a tarp shelter than in your tent.
If you want more protection from the elements, put up some windbreaks around the sides.

I use a tarp all the time as a extra space for dining, cooking. Also used it last week as a shade over the front of my vango tent. Brilliant bit of kit. 👍

I have been looking for a video like this for some time very informative thank you. Tarps are so much easier to carry when packed in the car Less room is taken up than a gezebo set up.

Just spent hours trying to work out if this would be something I could do due to not wanting to buy a massive tent that won't fit in the boot. Thank you very much. Really well explained and I liked the discussion about options of setting it up.

What size tarp is this please? Our tent is 2.2 x 2.35 x 1.75 m and we would like a shelter out the front like this too- we are considering perhaps a tarp large enough to also cover the tent from rain additionally? Please can you help?

This one is a 3x3m tarp, which is a good size and will work with most tents.

Great vid. Do you think this could work as a connection between a camper van (T5) and our 4 man tent? Drive away awnings cost a fortune!
@GetoutwiththekidsCoUk
@GetoutwiththekidsCoUk 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, that's something you could easily do. Especially if you have roof bars on your T5, where you could secure the tarp with some bungees.

Some of the kits come with poles. If not, you can buy tarp poles from camping shops.

When I went tent camping several years ago at a local campsite, I seen people would pitch the 2 and 3 person tents in between 2 trees, and then they had the thicker material tarps, and they would take string or ropes and tie the tarp to the two trees and have it directly over top of the tent, but have it so it was angled backwards away from the tent, because tent's are not normally water proof. There is a guy with a video I saw saying how you can set up your tent outside, let it rain, and then let the sun dry the tent out and it makes the material tighter so that you're giving the tent a natural water proof, but the problem there is that the sun will actually make your tent dry rot.
@GetoutwiththekidsCoUk
@GetoutwiththekidsCoUk 5 жыл бұрын
Actually, most tents are waterproof. That's because most tents are polyester based material. It is the canvas/poly-cotton tents that need to be 'weathered' first. The best way to do this is to pitch the tent at home, if you have space, and then spray it with a garden hose, and then let the tent dry out naturally. You don't need the sun to do this. The material will dry with just the air blowing over it. What happens is that all of the cotton fibres expand when wet and fill all of the small stitching holes, and then they dry, plugging the hole. Most decent poly-cotton tents come pre-treated to make them more waterproof, but 'weathering' them is still worth doing to make sure all the seams self-seal.

@@GetoutwiththekidsCoUk So if I have a tent bought from wally world for example, those are pretty low end tents but anyway, if I bought one from there, you're saying that all I'd have to do is set it up, wet it down, let it dry naturally and it will make the dome part of the tent more stiff so that it will withstand rains completely? How long does the process take? I'm sure I would have to do this numerous times, maybe 10 times or so? Would you still use a tarp for going over top of the tent after doing this procedure?
@GetoutwiththekidsCoUk
@GetoutwiththekidsCoUk 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, for parts of the tent that are polycotton. Obviously not if your tent is breathable mesh though ;-) I believe it can help stitching even on polyester tents. See this www.getoutwiththekids.co.uk/camping/camping-tips/fix-a-leaking-tent/

@@movie0007 I think you must be in USA? Your tents are different I think, our tents in UK are waterproof. They have to be, it rains a lot. Nobody would go camping if they didn't sell waterproof tents. People in UK talk about canopy for somewhere to sit outside in the rain. Not to protect the tent from getting wet. :)
