We've been talking about this for years and we finally got around to getting it done. We didn't go to far for this first trip so we had an easy out in case we ran into unforeseen issues but aside from some forgotten bug-spray, it actually went really well.

I get the home sick thing. I grew up in Grand falls. Now in southwestern Ontario. I sure do miss the landscape out there, not so much the bugs, or amount of snow. Another 20-ish years to wait, but I hope to retire out that way somewhere. At least spend my summers there. I need to re-explore New Brunswick like I did in my twenties.

@@John-gp9qf You could still do that but go to a place that other would struggle to get to. I am not so much a backpacker but love caneoing to remote places and then walk to explore the area and look at the animals around, I can't see why you couldn't do the same with an aircraft (except here in the UK, we are restricted to wild areas we can camp in).

A poor story of three campers, (an almost true story): They flew there with two microlite aircraft, they flew back to get another camper they could not take the first time. They did remember bug spray, however, the bugs didn't care and ate them half to death. During the night the rain came on, one of them panicled and went to his microlite, but wandered into some quick sand, his dieing calls were heard by the others, but he had sunk out of sight by the time the others got there. They went back to their tents thinking "More beer for us" and they went to sleep in a half drunken state. They woke to the sound of heavy rain, then it dawned on them that they had better get off the island before the river rose and the gravel bank runway was under water. As the packed up their tents they heard a roar of water, the river was rising very quickly, they left their tents in an attempt to reach their microlite aircraft and take off before it was to late and there was no beach left. They got to the edge of the island just in time to see the microlite aircraft hit by a wall of rising water and with a crunching, crashing noise the water swallowed up the microlites, smashed them against the side of the island and swallowed them up and carried them downstream to oblivion! The two remaining campers realising they were is great danger walked away from the bank to find a high spot, but there was none, just the odd small tree. However one tree stood higher than the others, so they ran to it as the waters rose above the bank of the island and started to swallow the land they were standing on. They climbed the tree as high as they could, helping each other as they climbed. Still the water rose and rose until the island was all but gone. A house owner noticed that the river was rising, he had been woken by the heavy rain, he looked out to see the island was almost under water, then he remembered he had seen two microlites land there last night making a lot of noise. He looked for traces of them, but through the semi-darkness he saw nothing. As he stared out through the now morning light, the light of day just breaking the horizon, he saw a dark shape where the island was, it was sticking up above the water. He knew from past times the river had risen so high that there was one tree that was the last to go under the water. Just than he thought he saw something moving out in the water. He stared into the ever increasing light of the morning. He could make out a shape out in the water, but it didn't look like the tree. He grabbed his binoculars and looked across the very high water that was now so high it was coming down in waves. As he picked out the tree he spotted two people, drenched and hanging on for dear life to the tree which was bending under under the pressure of the water trying to push it over and downstream. He ram and picked up his mobile phone and dialled for help. Just then there was a cracking noise and a splash as the tree gave up its fight to stay upright. it bent over and sunk below the water taking with it the two people that was clinging to it branches for a last chance at life. But it was not to be and as it took the two people below the waves the old man heard one shout "Oh F***". As they drowned in the water, the bald eagle that had been watching them came in the hope that they left something to eat rubbed its wings together at the thought of the feast of the two peoples bones tonight when they were washed up downstream, cold, lifeless, but above all, yummy! Never again was there a noise in the skies above the river. But wait, here comes a woman flying a microlite and a bright yellow microlight. As they come into land at a nearby Burger kink the pilot of the Bright Yellow microlite was heard to say "Oh, Vicky, I need a pee!" FIN.

Been seeing a lot of ultralights lately. Back country flying and camping always seemed far too expensive and out of reach. Somehow I'd never considered doing it with an ultralight, but it makes perfect sense. I still can't immediately afford $20,000 for a plane, but it's sure as hell a lot more achievable than $200k to $500k for a proper bush plane.
