In this video I change the PCV valve on my 2015 Camry 2.5 I4 with the 2ARFE engine. This car was burning about 1.5 qts of oil over 5k miles. I'm not sure if it solved the problem at the time of this video, but I thought I'd give it a try, since it's reap and it's a regular maintenance item

I have a 2016 Scion tC (The second gen tC has the same engine and transmission as the Camry and Rav4) and the process is the same. On a normal car where the pcv valve is on top of the engine, I would recommend removing the PCV valve every 30K miles of so, check it, clean it if needed and put it back in, or replace it if it is gummed up. But with the horrible placement on this engine, checking/cleaning it is not an easy option. So rather, I'm just going to replace it every 60-70K miles. I just replaced the PCV for the first time at 69K, it took about 2hrs from wheel off to wheel on, and here's what I learned. - On the tC, after removing the plastic panel, the opening in the fender well is a bit tighter. The body style is a bit smaller and lower, so I guess that's expected. - Even with the smaller opening in the wheel well, there is still plenty of room to work to remove the crank position sensor wire and bracket. I went a bit further and from the top, I unclipped the next wire support up the line, and was able to really get the wiring and bracket pushed out of the way, giving me a bit more space to work. - Getting the hose on and off is the hardest part. I was able to see it and reach it by hand, by lying on the floor under the brake rotor. Took a bit to find a position that would allow me to get my hand up in there such that I could pinch and slide the hose clamp back. I was able to do this with my left hand - no plyers needed! Then the hose pulls off easilly. - The valve itself was not too hard. A long socket with a short extension and flex head wrench worked perfectly. The flex head wrench is helpful, but you might be able to get by with a non-flex wrench. - From the bottom of the engine, the new valve screws in easilly by hand as long as you put it in the socket with an extension first. Once it is in by hand, I found it was easier to use a wrench to tighten it from above. I even was able to get a torque wrench on it and tighten it to spec (18 FtLb) - Getting the hose and clamp back on is the hard part. I was able to do this by feel from under the car using my left hand. - I should be able to do this a lot quicker next time. I spent so much time just trying to figure out the best way to position myself to see the thing and reach up in there. Hope these tips help others!

The Toyota engine that was burning oil due to defective piston rings was the 2.4L 4cyl 2AZ-FE . I had a 2007 Scion tC that had that engine. The car was great, but burned too much oil , almost 1qt per 1,000 miles. The Toyota dealer in Roseville, California said it was normal and didn't want to repair the engine. I NEVER returned to that dealer.

Thanks for the video instructions. I disconnected the hose from top, remove the tire, side cover , crank position sensor and the bracket then pull the hose out of the PCV valve, it's not too bad and it took me almost an hour to get the job done. Note: don't forget to plug in the crank position sensor to the sensor or you car won't start. At 97K miles the PCV valve still looking pretty good.

I missed a lot in this video. Much talking done about the top of the engine and the actual removal of the valve was not there. And when he moved the wrench and said that was a removal it was actually tightening. I jacked up the car, remove the wheel and cover and the wiring and still my hand was at least 3 inches away from the PCV hose. So I suspect that the video of the turning wrench and the PCV valve was made when a Camry with same engine(not the youtuber’s car) was on a car lift

These engines have been in use on Toyota Camry since 2010. I have a 2011 Camry with the same engine. It was burning oil. I changed the PCV and I didn't notice any change. I was changing the oil at an interval of 6k. I switched between 3500 and 4000 miles, then I noticed a difference. I believe that the whole thing happened because the dealership in the past was changing the oil every 8 to 10k. For NYC that is too long.
@dcfgarage
@dcfgarage Жыл бұрын
older 2ARFE had piston rings issues and they would burn a lot of oil. This was a big issue back then and Toyota used to consider "normal" if it burned 1qt every 1,000 miles and would not replace the engine.

Haynes Illustration for you guys! *PCV vavle: **ibb.co/xXZBB64** Intake Removal and install: **ibb.co/2ycHTQ8* Note: This method is more time consuming and you have to Release to Fuel Pressure: 1 Remove the fuel filler cap - this will relieve any pressure built up in the tank. 2 Remove the center console box (see Chapter 11, Section 22 ). 3 Locate the fuel pump/sending unit electrical connector and unplug it (the harness will exit through a grommet in the vehicle's floor). 4 Start the engine and allow it to run until it stops (it should only run for a few seconds, or it might not even start). Turn the ignition switch Off and disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery before working on the fuel system (see Chapter 5 ). 5 The fuel system pressure is now relieved. Place a shop rag around any fitting to be disconnected to catch the residual fuel as it bleeds off. Dispose of the fuel soaked rag in an approved safety container. 6 When you’re finished working on the fuel system, reconnect the fuel pump/sending unit harness connector and connect the negative cable to the battery. 7 Performing this procedure may cause a Diagnostic Trouble Code to set (fuel system too lean). If this happens, refer to Chapter 6 and erase the trouble code.

Just two important tips... make sure you put two jack stands, a tire and the jack when you lay down under the car. Specially with jack stands failing these days... and the second tip is that it's easier if you lay on your back under the rotor with your feet facing the front of the car. That should allow you to reach the PCV valve... but please be safe!

Excellent workup. I had the chance to do this on a 2014 RAV ARFE. Your video was excellent in identifying location, problems and hardware required. Let me add this. It took me 4 hours because I could not get the valve back in the engine thread. You can see the hole(?) in the engine where the PCV goes if you shine a light just right. I finally discovered this technique: lie down with back on ground and feet pointing forwards. snake your left hand carrying pcv into area of "hole and get a feel for it with your pinky. Once you are sure you know where the thread is use your other fingers to put pcv into slot and try to get some turns into thread. I was able to get quite a few turns into albeit a few degrees at a time. Once it is secure, you can use the socket and ratchet Will need same socket and ratchet as shown by poster. Got my socket at home depot

Great job. I have a 2010 Camry that I'm going to try this on. FYI, on the 2.4 Toyota wouldn't commit to a Recall. They issued a service bulletin that involved them changing your oil, sealing your dipstick, then checking the level after 1000 miles. They had a chart that would determine if they would replace the rings or not. I think Toyotas are great, but the ring issue is disappointing.

Hi Josue. It was the consumption that made me change the PCV, because this engine is quite new and I thought bad valve seals or blown head gasket would be unlikely. If your car goes through 1-2 qts in 3k miles or less, I doubt it's the PCV. It's either the two situations I mentioned or worn out piston rings. How many miles does your car have? Does it smoke?

@@josuedonan5666 If the car isn't smoking and you don't have signs of blown head gasket like milky sludge in the radiator cap. You can try replacing the PCV. If that doesn't work, they you might have some premature piston ring wear. I think the vacuum after you turn off the engine is a different problem. That could be a bad intake manifold seal. light vacuum when the engine is running is normal.

@dcfgarage
@dcfgarage 2 ай бұрын
I'm a DIYer. For what I know it's normal for oil to accumulate inside intake manifold in modern cars because of exhaust gas recirculation (AKA PCV) systems, specially if you have a turbo or compressor because you'll have more blow-by. You can add an oil catch can and that should resolve 90% of it.

I highly doubt it that the PC valve is a culprit. The problem is related to rings - I have a same engine and the issue started around 60,000 miles. Toyota should recall this engine too, but allowed the owners to suffer the expense of fixing the engine. (I think they only went to 2009 with the recall).

I know this video is 2 years old but there is another reason Toyota engines are consuming oil. The 10K mile interval for oil changes are damaging the piston oil rings. Sludge builds up and clogs the rings and lets oil pass by (for a simple explanation). Do not go by the 10k oil changes, do 5k like most other engines. Damage on used vehicles that used the 10k recommendation for years may be irrreversible and require new engine or expensive repairs.
