Testing of the camshaft position sensor not on the car. Sensor testing by its internal resistance and voltage produce with a dummy camshaft target. It shows the voltage and waveform reading on a good and bad sensor on a scope.

I have a 97 toyota 4runner with a crank but no start issue. I recently hooked up my ohms meter to the sensors terminals as you have done here to test the resistance. I was getting 1.04 @ 2k. I was under the thought if no load is shown on the meter then the sensor is bad but if any reading comes back it is good? After watching your video, how does one positively identify a bad camshaft position sensor then?
@iosefoyagomate5647 Жыл бұрын
If the resistance measured by the sensor is in the MegaOhms range that's indicative of a defective coil inside the sensor.

I tried this on both my old sensor and brand new sensor (two wire for 2003 Mazda Tribute 3.0L) just out of the box and they are only showing 330ohms(old) and 367(new) for resistance not 835. When I tried to test AC voltage with a magnetizable piece of metal like on the video (i don't have a drill so i did it by hand), my meter set to my lowest AC volts(200V~) setting, stayed at 00.00 with no change, even on the new sensor. What do you think is going on?

cars have different sensor spec, the sensor on the video is from a toyota..if you test it you need a drill to read the voltage..thanks for watching

@@jlsetnuper Thanks for the reply! In the video it showed the volt meter reacting as you quickly flicked the metal back and forth by it with your hand before you used the drill even if it was just 0.02 - 0.09. I just thought there was something wrong when i did the same and got no reaction at all. Maybe my sensor is just different and the voltage is just too low to read that way. Oh well. Gotta do some more diagnostics anyway. Thanks for the video. :)

Subscribed. V.V good demo. But you have used only two wire type sensor. There is 3 wire type sensor also . So the waveform will be different or same? What is the internal difference betbetween the two??? Also function wise crank sensor & cam sensor are both same but the crank sensor produces pulse wave & cam sensor gives triangular wave. How does this happen?

for crank or cam 2 wire sensor , will produce saw tooth or triangular wave form and for 3 wire sensor crank or cam, it will produce a square wave , and crank sensor send the signal to ECU for the engine rotation while cam sensor send the signal to the ECU when to inject fuel and when to fire the ignition..thanks for viewing

how many volts has to reach the sensor. I checked the sensor of my car and it has 5.04
@jlsetnuper2 жыл бұрын
if you test it on the car it should be 5 volt because its coming from the computer. If you test the sensor itself as in the video , a good sensor will produce only up to 900 mVolt..thanks for watching

So this basically an inductor: when the camshaft tips pass over it, the inductor generates produces a small current /voltage .. yup, when hot, all materials increase resitence. And what you are reading when the meter scale in the M-ohms, is just fugue current from the meter as the inductor is open.

@jlsetnuper8 ай бұрын
yes..sensor is 1.13k ohms
@tipsandhowtovidsbybrianpal72828 ай бұрын
Still didn't answer the question so basically since everyone wants to half ass explain, all of you act like you're paying so much attention to detail. Basically what you're saying is, no matter where you put your multimeter leads, no matter 2 or 3 pin sensor, you place your leads between any two pins, cause you said sensor but not what ponds on the sensor, for the second time and don't give me the same answer like your telling me what I want to know. Might as well delete your half explained video no good to know half of the details

@jlsetnuper spec shows sensor resistance in ohms, your meter reading is in k ohms, is the sensor usable.

@@jlsetnuper Thanks I had later found that excellent youtube. I made a similar bench rig, using two 10K resistors as voltage divider. I had one thought-good sensor and two I suspected bad (magnet was weak in one and no force in other, both had tripped codes in vehicle). But, all 3 checked out in the bench test, changing output when the steel target was ~100 mil away (~20 mil factory gap). So my problem now is perhaps wiring, 8 VDC supply, or circuitry inside the engine controller. Erratic over the years, causing engine to die but sometimes a year or two between incidents and both crank and cam sensors have been flagged. One youtuber says that Chryslers might flag a bad crank sensor when cam sensor is bad and vice-versa. Makes sense because the controller looks for discrepancies between the two signals.
