Blazing fast 5G speeds are here but they aren't all that useful on the new 5G smartphones. WSJ's Joanna Stern packed up a motor home to see if the connection could power all her connected gadgets, including laptops, printers, Xboxes and camera-equipped doorbells. She explains the confusing world of 5G along the way. Photo illustration: Sharon Shi

The issue is today's 5G is still nonstandalone 5G(NSA), real 5G with super low latency is 5G standalone(SA). That's why gaming was laggy. Current 5G still relies on LTE uploads. When standalone 5G launches, you'll see latency improve greatly.

Sure, you can use 5G instead of a broadband connection at home, but it's going to be CONSIDERABLY more expensive. The cell companies aren't going to give up anything for free. With 5G you could potentially use your entire data limit up in seconds then be subject to obscenely expensive overage charges.

And here I am getting 550 mb/s download speeds an 100 mb/s upload in Lisbon, for 60€/month. A massive state initiative from 2008-2011 to build an incredible fiber optics infrastructure that everyone has to have access to has allowed this to happen. The infrastructure company rents it to multiple ISP's and due to the early investment in fiber optics technology, Portugal became a software/hardware powerhouse when it comes to its fiber optics service. 5g is cool and all, but from what I've seen so far, it won't change my life in the immediate future

Comparing VZW download to the home wifi upload speeds..... Considering you’re in Jersey City and getting 100 upload, likely you’re on Verizon FiOS so you can upgrade to 1000 mbps down and upload for a little more in cost. mmwave uploads currently are between 20 Mbps and 110 Mbps so the fiber would be much better on the upload and pings are 1-5ms.

I don't really anticipate the need to buy a phone for its ability to pick up 5g anytime soon based on these tests. I'm more focused on improved ram, battery life, storage space, and the camera's capabilities since 5 g will take really a decade or more flesh out all the kinks. Also, I find it very hard to beat Google Fiber, it's basically 5g and it's already here.

5G should not be used in your home unless you have no other options (such as Verizon Fios which can give you gigabit+ speeds). 5G is primarily designed for IOT and mobile applications. It is not practical to use your cell phone for home internet. Fiber Optics will always be faster than wireless.

In London UK I barely get 60-80mbps down 30-40mbps upload from my home broadband. That is relatively fast here. You need a specialist supplier if you want faster speeds than this. Real advantage will be for countries that can jump straight from 4G only connection on their mobiles to 5G in most places, as they won't have to waste money on infrastructure like putting cables in the ground etc

I have 5G home broadband here in London, the one with big huawei wifi router and I live 150 meters from the 5g node. And yes I get faster speeds than standard fibre, however the biggest problem is instability, there all the time these short dips where either speed goes down significantly or the ping is extremely high 100ms +. So what that means in reality is let’s say I’m streaming Netflix or Disney plus in 4k but every five minutes I get this drops in quality to sub hd because of the instability of the 5g. Of course this problem is non-existent on standard broadband or fibre

Wonderful, a few folks in NYC, Chicago, a few other huge cities will have faster cell data. BUT I live in a half million metro area in the Midwest and when I drive 5 miles east I can only get 3G. 5G is not going to fix that in the next decade. When I visit my partners family farm 40 miles sw of KC, neither my Verizon nor her AT&T phones work at all. 5G is pure BS in most of the Midwest. The only reason 4G works within 5 miles of the interstate is the truckers need it and pay premium rates.

I believe that it's not mmWave. Also this test is under a basestation (BE) which doesn't make sense. Many users are pretty random in distance to the BS. So when you report the speed please do a random walk on the street. If it's mmWave, there will be quite a lot of BS on the street, otherwise, the signal must be super low due to the short wavelength.

Interesting experiment that shows some performance on the 5G networks. Although, I can't ignore the fact that I'm really annoyed that she keeps comparing 5G as amazing compared to her 100mbit/s connection and as if wifi was inferior to 5G. Seriously, she's going around in the middle of the city which I'm sure she could get much faster broadband connection than 100 mbit/s if she wanted to pay for it. The 5G test are uncapped speeds, so that's an unfair comparaison vs the capped home broadband. For outside the city with people stuck old cooper connection, that's an other story, but the test wasn't done on the country side, so....

But Verizon sets your data cap on a family plan at 16 gb which is much lower than home cable Cox at 1TB.

shouldn't she be concentrating on price rather than speed? price is the thing that will hold most people back.... not the fact that they are *only* getting 100mbps at home

If WSJ asks me to go and do the speed test, I would try parallel downloads on several laptops. Edit: the question still remains, do we really need 5G with that speed? If you want your Gb's and Tb's of data to be stolen in a flick (Like Thanos wiped out the half population of all universe in a flick :D) or if you have 8k LED TV's at home then you surely need 5G.
