We were invited by Kask, to Bergamo, Italy for a Factory Tour! Kask showed us around their testing facility, including a first look at their new Defender helmet and how they have been rigorously testing it with all kinds of safety checks. Not only is the Defender strong but it's incredibly light! We sat down with the guys at Kask to talk design and hear how they're managed to shed the grams whilst not compromising on safety!
In association with Kask: gmbn.tech/KaskCyclingHelmets

Not only did we get to see into Kask's test facility, but they also showed us how a helmet is made, from the selection of materials & the different jobs they're meant to carry out, all the way up to the assembly of what you can buy in stores!

I use the Bell Super DH - I can decide very quickly what I like - but I prefer more the Full Face setup when going "downhill". In my opinion your team should use Full Face helmets most of the time because you are role models and have a lot of youngster audience - the more of the "Heroes" use Full Face the more will imitate you. But this is only my narrow perspective ;-) Like your show it's always something new to learn.

100% agree, i used to only ever ride open face but recently I bought a 661 Reset and its really not that hot to wear and not very restrictive, I can still drink from my camelback with it on too. Given that I value my face, I've seen how fucked up some of my friends have gotten who are damn good riders when they've only been wearing an open face, and how mangled the helmets were afterwards... any time I'm off road the full face goes on now, even if its just a warm-up blast on a blue/red trail. My open face enduro helmet has been reserved for use at the local pump track only, as I'm not really that fast on it yet and bailing is easier and there isn't much to hit into.

I know plenty of guys who've said "I'm going to buy a full face" AFTER having a crash that involves stitches and losing teeth/expensive dental work. I bought e Fox ProFrame and it is super light, super comfy, and has the best ventilation of any bike helmet I've ever worn, road or MTB. I live in a hot climate and I have no problems, the ventilation is superb. And seeing as how I can go OTB on any sort of trail, it's a full face for me! The only time I wear my open face helmet on my MTB is riding around the neighbourhood or commuting, or doing longer more mellow gravel rides on fire roads.

Mububban23 i would not recommend that helmet whatsoever. My buddy crashed in one. Went otb and it broke... on the chinbar. He had just got the the helmet too and it actually ended up causing more damage as the upper part of the chinbar broke off gott shoved in his mouth and left his tounge hanging by a thread. Just bite the bullet and get a real full face

With how aggressive trail riding is getting, it's making more and more sense to wear a light full face. Helmets like the Troy Lee Design Stage or Fox Proframe are super light and very breathable. I just got the TLD Stage and wore it in 18*-24*C (65*-75*F) weather. It was a bit warmer than a half shell, but no where near as stuffy as my DH helmet. Well worth the extra protection while riding a local double-black trail.

I've always been an appropriate helmet for the terrain sort of guy which generally meant my Carbon TLD D3 Full Face for DH or park and a well ventelated trail helmet for everything else. Between a bad crash and airy new enduro helemts I've just picked up a Bell Super Air R and will never go back. Its as light as the average trail helmet, as ventilated as most XC lids, and the chin bar goes on/off in seconds. I always ride with a medium hydration pack so the chinbar easily goes in the back on climbs, fire roads etc. The fox Proframe was a close runner up. The chin bar was just as airy but the helmet was not and it was a bit heavier. As more co's make light convertible Full Faces there won't be a reason not to.

🤔 I remember there was a debate on wether downhill helmets should be tested by *motorcycle standards* - due to the fact that the forces applied in case of a crash are actually more similar to the ones occuring in a motorcycle accident than just casual (road) cycling, wich the tests seem to be designed around. Notice the dude at 0:33 riding?! _Definately_ exceeding the 16.4 / 19.5 km/h mentioned at 12:10 - imo it would make more sense to run tests for motorcycle impacts than the ones just matching light roadie bicycle riding!

I wear full face for practically all of my mountain biking now. My Troy Lee Designs Stage has tons of ventilation I find it isn't any hotter than any of my previous open face helmets. The fit is also excellent but I also come from a motocross backround so the fit is also very familiar to me. I only use open face on easy flat trails where I do my recovery rides just so I don't look like a knob wearing a full face on a flat easy trail. Also, I've never hit my face/chin guard even during the 15 years of motocross before I got into mountain biking. But you can't change your helmet mid-crash when you see that tree/rock/root/dirt rushing straight toward your face.

I also saw a young kid go over his bars on Friday and break his nose face planting the floor. Oh yeah and we all saw Neil face plant at windhill not long ago. All these things are making me want a full face, considering all these accidents have happened during normal riding conditions with nothing overly gnarly going on.

If memory serves me correct, Kask were a spin-off of Suomy brand Italy. I believe Suomy was manufacturing Kask helmets when Kask first started but then may have become their own company I'm not sure if they're still owned by Suomy. I suspect that they do because Doddy mentioned the motorcycle helmet test heads, since Kask doesn't make Moto Helmets, which leads me to believe that they're still part of the company. When I got a DH full face briefly (never ridden it, decided I won't be needing it for my empty head) it was very tight, very difficult to slide over ears, cheeks were squeezed tightly, so it probably was the right size, although could be a bit wider for the ears - I felt literally claustrophobic in it, no joke. And for polish sahara-like recent summers, I was very worried about seriously dangerous level of overheating my head. You know air expands in hot weather, the more of it in empty head, the more it expands ;-p No but seriously, it was hot and claustrophobic. Not a nice feeling. And it was about 140 euro, so not some crap.

#askgmbntech hello doddy, I currently run a 2015 Boxxer RC that came with my sacaren myst that I bought used. I think the coil is loose because I can listen to a light tap when it recovers. Compression adjustment has 10 clicks, but they seem a bit useless because it's either soft or stiff as a rock. Question is: will a good maintenance make the fork work that much better, or should I just try to sell this fork and get a Team Or WC version, as apparently the charger damper in them is amazing. The fatigue in my hands and arms after 5 full downhill runs is bad enough for me to stop riding that day. Thank you for the help.

The flaw of this helmet testing is it's testing the strength of the helmet, it needs to test the g's transferred to the Head form, even the best helmets don't account for a lighter small head needing softer foam because of less Mass at the same speed it needs to be softer.

I wish well ventilated full face light enduro helmets would start at low prices and creep up like we see with all bicycle components and accesories. But they didn't, not very logical for a single impact item.

I really hope this was filmed months ago, or that you're not coming back to the UK for a fortnight.

Filmed over a month ago yes! Unfortunately this area has been hit pretty hard and our thoughts are with the people here at a difficult time.

A test to see if the helmet can get ripped off you head is good and all, but what’s the point of the consumer purchases a helmet that is too big?

Any of this test and weight is not accurate as when fall happen its not only the head weight there but all the body if u head up first so they supposed to hold up with at leat 100kg of body weight plus the speed of fall witch it made the weight much more so I don't really think they are safe

11:27 It's funny, that whenever there is a trip to a factory, on this or any other channel, every company likes to exceed the testing requirements, and "it can be different with other companies"....So who are those other companies, if EVERY time on a factory trip, they exceed? ;-)

just as useless as the tests at Canyon, that's a minimum requirement to be CE compliant. At Canyon, the bikes still fall apart at the customer, KZfaq is full of them. Maybe ND should have been wearing one when he went on his nose with his video "How to avoid accidents". maybe the 500 € helmet would have helped, lol
